time to add a new monthly bill to my list of expenses

I was surprised that ATT rejected my credit card for the data service because it's billed to a po box. irony is, ATT already uses that same po box-billed credit card for my iPhone wireless service, a much bigger monthly bill. weird.

att cust svc proposed a workaround involving having my cc company link a physical address to my cc account even though that physical address will not be used for anything. we'll see.

I wonder how many laid down the cash for the 3g model without even thinking about tethering to their iPhone.

Many of us thought about it. However, most US carriers charge extra for tethering. I'm sure ATT will eventually allow us to tether our iPhones to our iPads. What will it cost extra?

My guess: $30/month for unlimited tethering.

There is no free lunch. Much more convenient with the 3G iPad.

Maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't one apply a hack and use a 3g ipad with the unlimited monthly plan to tether it to whatever I want?

I really don't understand why people are complaining about the micro sim. The new iPhone is going to have it too. That's what happens with technology, it gets more compact over time, and space is important with these ultra compact devices. And the people still complaining about it being a giant iPod Touch are pathetic. I assume all of them have the smallest flatscreen TVs available, because the other ones are just bigger versions.

The Micro sim standard has been around for a long time just no one choose to use it because it offered no real advantages over current sim card in use.

It is an odd ball size in the standards out there and everyone use uses the other standard.

Also the size of the sim card has no real effect on the size of the device. It is a little extra piece of plasitc they have to deal with. The sim card reader itself is still the same size. Also phones have not been effect for years on technological limitation of size but limited on piratical limitation. Phone sizes over the past year years has been growing in average size. Not shrinking.

Apple choose the microsim for the same reason they do not use standard connection for the iPod and iPhone. Same reason why Apple is going against the microUSB standard that they said they would follow. It is because they want to make it difficult for people to hope around and leave the apple ecosystem.

Answering My Own Question

I earlier posted that we will be waiting to here from the new owners whether any of them are having connectivity issues with either WiFi or 3G. In the meantime, I received my own WiFi - 3G unit and have signed up for the data plan and logged into my home network. WiFi works great as does the 3G. So far so good. We'll see how others fair.

As of 12:30ish, four people in line already at one store near Atlanta. Two brought chairs (I thought it ironic one was reading a paper book).

About 100-150 people in line. Staff insisting on wanting to delight all. Asking all what models people want. Plastic payment only. Army of staff inside. 2 cops.

Surprised no one commented on how identical the side micro-sim port design is to iPhone 4.....

This is what i was thinking, and it leads me to two thoughts:

1) instead of tethering iphone will you be able to take the micro sim out of iphone 4 and place it into a ipad and not have to pay for a service you already get. This would of course not allow you to take or make phone calls do to lack of microphone in ipad.

2) I know this is cart before the horse, but could this also lead to 2nd gen ipad to have a microphone and allow you when you wanted to take your micro sim out of the iphone and use your ipad and still have call functionality. If that was the case that would sell me on it!

It's not that, it's just that posting that you don't want a product EACH AND EVERY TIME AN ARTICLE IS WRITTEN ABOUT IT gets annoying and seems trollish. Which I'm not saying you do yourself, but there's an army of folks who feel the need to spout their iPad opinion in comment threads about any random little thing related to the iPad. It gets annoying for those of us just trying to discuss the point who weren't looking for amateur critic hour.

When an article comes out about some software I don't use I don't jump on and declare "don't need it; don't see the point." Like when a new version of Quickbooks is announced I don't jump in and say "Not an accountant. Don't need it. You're all idiots." That would be childish, no?

He's entitled to say whatever he wants. If you don't think his tone is fawning enough then add him to your ignore list and get on with your life.

And as for your Quickbooks analogy: huh?
The iPad isn't some obscure piece of accountancy software, it's a central tenet of Apple's future hardware strategy. So much so that work on OSX 10.7 has almost halted. If people want to vent their disappointment at The. Biggest. iPod. Ever. then this would seem to be the perfect place for it. You don't have to engage them if you don't want to, just keep scrolling by there, big guy.

Do we think it would be fair to say battery life is going to be noticably worse on the 3G iPads when it's in use?

Does not the "mobile communiations" side of things take a fair chunk of power?

Came at 2:18 :)

FedEx guy was worn out! 25 delivered on my block (SE Portland, OR) alone.

I don't care what his tone in, I just think he's a bit off topic. I don't care if he likes the iPad or not. It does not hurt my feelings and I have no need for him to fawn.

So, basically, you're saying that any article about an iPad is the perfect place to express disappointment about the existence of the iPad, in perpetuity? Yeah, you're a reasoning champion.

I'm not making some point about rights: he of course, within Macrumors rules, has the right to say whatever he wants. I'm saying that he, and others who make similar posts, are "that guy." You know, like when 4 people are having a discussion about the cinematography in movie and one of them keeps butting in every five minutes to declare "that movie sucks." 1) You only need to say that once, and 2) nobody was talking about whether they thought the movie sucked or not, they were talking about its cinematography. Nobody likes that guy, and not because he has a differing opinion, but because he just can't follow conversational standards.

He he :)

Although am I the only one seeing the irony in that I needed to enable flash to see that video?

Yeah, I keep seeing this happening.

Full of people saying how Flash is the devil and posting links to reviews done in Flash.

Been going on for ages now.
:D

Hey yeah, just like I'm entitled to tell you to get the heck out this thread if you don't have something relevant and ON TOPIC to contribute.

It's annoying to have all these haters come in and post how stupid we are for buying "the biggest iPod ever" and other asinine, unwarranted comments. Obviously we have a use for these devices, though it's not really any of your business. And yes the Quickbook analogy is just fine. You may think of Quickbook as some obscure piece of software, but other's may consider it the holy grail of accounting aids. It just proves how much of hater you really are, I suppose.

Ok, that said, I receive mine this afternoon. For whatever reason it seems to have superior wifi reception than the wifi version I had. I get full bars upstairs now compared to the 1 bar with the wifi model I had.

Also to answer another poster's question, the GPS DOES work w/o an active cellular plan. Can't wait to start seeing iPad apps taking advantage of it. When the FedEx guy dropped it off, he walked up and said....here's your iPad, I've been delivering these things left and right all day.

It's not all about YOU

I have to agree [idiotic to buy iPad] no need to have an iPad when you have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone (preferably the new one). The iPad just isn't for me.

Fine vote with your wallet, just as millions of buyers are doing this year.

WOW Apple store never got the 3g ipads.....

So, Apple stores were supposed to close today between 4 and 5 for the release of the wi-fi+3g stocking event. It is 7:30 pm, and I just called my local apple store to see if I can have an apple care warrenty easily taken care of at site (charging cord for my iphone, rubber is cracking and exposing the wires near USB part).

So I asked them about the 3g ipads. the guy told me their location never received any shipments of them. They are hoping to have them tomorrow, maybe...

seriously? MacRumors compares virtually the same product with nothing more than a black strip and an extra slot. I never knew how many geeky and product-hungry techies were out there...

Oh yes, we are out here. :D I am not looking to hack / jailbreak mine when I get it, but many people are looking to (with 154 apps that do all I need, I don't need jailbreaking).
