I'm not making some point about rights: he of course, within Macrumors rules, has the right to say whatever he wants. I'm saying that he, and others who make similar posts, are "that guy." You know, like when 4 people are having a discussion about the cinematography in movie and one of them keeps butting in every five minutes to declare "that movie sucks." 1) You only need to say that once, and 2) nobody was talking about whether they thought the movie sucked or not, they were talking about its cinematography. Nobody likes that guy, and not because he has a differing opinion, but because he just can't follow conversational standards.

Hehe, yeah, I know "that guy". And you're right, he's a douche. I can totally see your point, but you just gotta keep scrolling man. I mean, c'mon, you got all CAPS LOCK angry about someone sounding off about how they think the iPad sucks. It works both ways, try starting a thread round here that critically assesses the iPad and in seconds you'll have an army of fanboy nazis doing the exact same thing that annoys you so much.

And as for conversational standards; on this new-fangled and "magical" interweb, "conversational standards" don't apply as they would in the real world. Most threads on most forums have multiple conversations going on, I tend to scroll through to the ones I'm following. It's no big hassle, in fact it's expected. No need to get so worked up!

Hole near black bar...

Yeah. Looks just like an iSight on a Macbook.

I think it's probably just the ambient sensor to see how bright the screen should be.

I am on my 3G now, it is hard to make out but there is something that looks like an iSight on a MacBook. As much as I would love to discover there is a camera it is probably a sensor. Don't the wifi models have this as well?

For all the talk of this being just a large Touch, it is not at all. I can easily see leaving my laptop home. I am impressed, for a first gen product it is outstanding. Have only got to play with it for two hours so far, not sure how I will keep it away from the kids over the weekend, lol.

I bought the 32 GB WiFi version and returned it after a couple days. I had hoped it'd bridge the gap between carrying my 2009 macbook pro, and my 2009 iphone 3GS.... but when I got it I realized it's not really anything more than a big iphone. For ME, it's useless, but I can see how it'd be an amazing device for someone who doesn't want to be able to download files, or play music through an even reasonable quality speaker, or someone who doesn't game, nor want the ability to multitask or run windows nor run apps requiring processor, nor encode video, nor download torrents, nor desire a decent resolution. Really, it's perfect otherwise :)

In all seriousness, it seems like it'd fill the same niche market as web-tv... people who want to be able to do something, but either want the convenience or cost savings associated with a ala carte device. This thing is primarily a way to surf the web, and check email. That's about 99% of PC users, but it would seem like as a MAC user the "think different" motto would have made a device that ran a slightly lighter version of OS X rather than a slightly enhanced version of iPhone OS.. I can't give my grandma a tablet that she can't save files and documents into directories without a jailbreak.... but what do I know, I just buy every device apple has ever released and this is the first time I've ever thrown a fish back into the pond.

I decided rather than returning it for cash back I'd take the credit and apply it toward a 2010 Macbook Pro ... NOW today is a release day I'm happy of the outcome, hehehehe

Trolling,Trolling, over the bounding Forum, where many an iPad -LESS jerk will come, till they realize HP slate is dead!

While his name-calling is out of line, the first half is his opinion. He's right though, it is an oversized ipod touch.... but what's wrong with that? Apple has sold more ipod touches than any other ipod product ever. In my mind it's an enhancement to a good thing, why would he say it with a negative connotation? I think Apple meant for it to be an oversized ipod touch. They pay some department millions of dollars to research and they clearly determined there's a market for the device. For me it's not a fit, but I can see how for many it would be. Some people are too poor to afford a nice new laptop so this is their only option. ;-)

Everyone that doesn't want to jailbreak.

exactly. I went the jailbreak route once... slow, buggy.. and the apps weren't worth it. Frankly $30 for truly unlimited data/month is not a bad deal... plus I have the added benefit of this nice 9.7inch TomTom in my car...

BTW: After a few hours of testing... the WIFI issue has been a non-issue with the 3G. I have 3 Wifi versions (mom, pop, son) which ALL have the problem... all though to be fair, I am using FIOS... which could be the problem for the WIFI versions.

The most important question is really: Can anybody who has both the WiFi-only as well as the 3G version check if WiFi is better on the 3G version?

Yes... so far... I as I have said in a previous post.. I have 3 Wifi versions (family members..). Wifi has been HORRENDOUS.. on these pads... the 3g.. after a few hrs testing has NOT asked me to enter my P-word.. OR disconnected me... I'm sure I'll need more testing though.. a few hrs may be "the lucky" period.

Yep - I think many of us were disappointed at the January Keynote. But once the ipad specific apps started coming out, then when we actually got to play with one; we were surprised. I know I am in that camp. Truely hated the concept of not being full OS X, then started seeing the apps, then started seeing the potential, then played with one at the apple store. After that I downloaded all the apps I will need (and I do not even have mine yet).

Was hoping to get one tomorrow, since I have to go to the apple store anyway do have the chargers replaced on 2 iphones. But I called my local apple store - they never got their shipments. They said hopefully tomorrow, maybe. I really do not want to fight the crowd at the other apple store. the one that did not get the shipment is only 1/2 hr away, the other is an hr away.

And given the little free wifi hotspots in my area, how most hotels do not have wifi but in the lobby, some hotels still charge for internet (and it is expensive), and the airports even charge for wifi - the 3g model is a better choice for me.

Kinda ugly. I dont like the black line across the top. Ugly is a strong word, just not as nice and elegant as the wifi. Besides, tehtering is coming. One way or another.

hmm... I dunno.. I kinda like it. Your right, it's not as clean as the Wifi version.. but the strip is seamless .. <meaning you can't feel any edges> so it's not that bad.
Actually... since I have a little OCD, the glass on the 3G (at least mine) is completely flush or "even" throughout the pad... compared to my son's 32 Wifi which has the left bottom corner slightly higher than the rest. I'm sure this is completely harmless.. but it helps me sleep at night.. LOL

I own a MacBook, touch, and an iMac. I don't hate them. I just hate when they try to sell me overpriced garbage instead of innovation.

I own a 27" iMac, an ipod touch, an iphone, 2 macbooks (work/home), and 2 iPads... <son's/mine>... the innovation is not in the technology.. it's in the Apps. The apps are by FAR more robust and full(er) featured than can be had on an iphone OR an ipod touch. Yes... it's WAY more convenient to have your iphone on you... but typing e-mails, surfing the web, viewing/editing spreadsheets is a bloody pain in the behind... (my personal opinion). In many ways.. YES the Ipad is a larger Ipod touch (or if you have the 3g a larger iPhone), but in many ways it supersedes both... with a larger screen.. slim form factor and always on internet (3g). For me... this device replaces my laptop. Easily. Frankly.. (IMO) Filing systems are overrated. My only beef is an "EASY!!" way to PRINT files. (Yes there are apps for that, but they all suck..) When someone (hopefully Apple................... ) makes it easy to print... done deal.

I am exchanging my WIFI for the 3G. Tethering is not the most convenient thing to do. I would also like to use my phone to make calls while on the pad.

Tethering doesn't affect your ability to make or receive calls.

The MiWi tethering app for jailbroken iphones gives a vastly better experience than the 3G version of the iPad. Netflix, the ABC app and YouTube work in full quality. You can download apps from the app store too (over 20 MB)

Apple Soho

Went by 14thst huge line! Tried two best buys - sold out. So on my way home go by Apple Soho at 6.30 was out in 5 mins with my new 64 3G iPad! No fuss no muss!

Folks, forget the 250MB -used 20% in 1 hour at Chilis

This is bogus. Just surfing and on the WSJ App.

Trying to change to unlimited!

ATT is a joke, their customer service is joke!

Apple selecting ATT is once again a very poor decision.

The people at ATT have no training on the iPad sign-up, cannot help you change the service plan. The on iPad system is not taking the change.

And, we have this problem now with 2 of the 3G iPad's.

People be forewarned. Best to go with the unlimited plan, or you will find out the hard and totally frustrating way!

Apple, I hate you for using ATT!

Next Saturday

Would anyone think that there'd be any 3g ipads left by next saturday?

Apple selecting ATT is once again a very poor decision.
AT&T's service may be poor, but it's not a poor decision. Apple wants to make 1 device for all markets worldwide. For 3G UMTS in the US, their choice is 850 band (AT&T) and 1700 band (T-Mobile). There are other countries that also use the 850 band, while only T-Mobile US uses 1700, so Apple picked a tri-band UMTS chip supporting 850 band. AT&T just happens to be the only other carrier that uses GSM/UMTS in the US, has more customers than T-Mobile, and the only other GSM carrier that has the best coverage (vs T-Mobile).

Just give it a static IP. You will find it works great.

Giant over-priced iPod Touch that you have to pay a monthly fee for. Hahaha idiots will buy anything.

The iPad is quite possibly the most useful device I have ever had. It is a better book reader than the Kindle. It is a very good mobile movie player, it is great for checking email when you don't want to break out the laptop.

I was waiting for a movie tonight. I wanted to do some work because I had several hours before the movie started. I went to the bar upstairs at the theater, grabbed a table, started coding on my laptop. I used the iPad for looking up functions and other research. (I connected both my laptop and my iPad to the internet using a Mifi.) When they opened up the theater, I used my iPad as a book reader until the previews started. Without my iPad, much of my night would have been wasted waiting for the stupid move (The only part of the night that was wasted was the time I was watching the move. Do not see Furry Vengeance.)

Yes, you can use an iPhone or an iPod Touch for email, watching movies and as a Kindle, but the screen is too small. The Kindle has the perfect sized screen.

No, but...

Does the 3G iPad locked or have to be used on ATT's network?

Jobs specifically stated during the announcement in January that it was not locked, and that you can use it on any carrier who uses Micro SIMs. However...

For those of us in the US, that's moot. The only other major carrier on the GSM network is T-Mobile. When I spoke to my T-Mobile commercial rep about the Micro SIM, his answer was "What's a Micro SIM?" That could be easily enough fixed, but the show stopper is the fact that T-Mobile's US network doesn't support the 3G frequencies that the iPad works on.

So, if you live in the US, it's not technically locked, but it might as well be. Thanks for throwing us in that snake hole known as AT&T once again, Steve.

You are correct, and your points make sense in the context of the success of the iPhone. But one has to wonder how many more iPhones would be sold if AT&T were not the exclusive carrier, and Apple offered the iPhone to work on other networks.

I know that I will be buying a Nexus one (or perhaps an EVO) if the iPhone 4.0 announcement doesn't include support for other US carriers. I will NOT give AT&T any money, and I am tired of having my 3G phone only work on EDGE. And Apple would have gotten another $130 from me if I could have put the iPad on another 3G/4G network besides AT&T.

Beautifully put. If I was sad enough to have a sig I'd edit this down and put it in there.

Do....you....talk....like....this....in....real....life....? It's....really.....tragic
Puts me in mind of the way Adam West speaks in original Batman tv series.

Of the three ways you say the iPhone is superseded, only one applies. Were you unaware of the iPhone's slim form factor and ability to access the internet via 3G?

So sayeth the troll, LOL.

The only thing more embarrassing than a fanboy's level of passion is an ANTI-fanboy's level of passion. :D

Look at the previous posts. Um, can we say "Google, Amazon, or Microsoft employee" anyone? Or is it disgruntled ex-Apple employee?

Reading some of your comments about the guy that said that.

The world REALLY is black and white for you lot. It could be (like me) that its just sometimes we DON'T like every single thing Apple bring out. And that sometimes we don't feel like parting with money for something that really doesn't replace everything else we already have. :D

Do you have to jailbreak?

No, you can set up tethering without jailbreaking. Here's a link to a site - you navigate to it from you iPhone and it'll allow you to set up tethering on it.

It's limited to bluetooth and USB tethering, but it's better than nothing, especially if you're averse to jailbreaking just for tethering (as I am).
