urban dictionary defines armchair quarterback as:

"some d-bag who is certain that he or she can make better decisions than the coaches or players while watching a competitive sport on television."

:D

Because unlike an Animal that only think and exists in the "NOW." Humans have more advanced brains and think of the future also.

It's part of the enjoyment of technology looking to the future and wondering what will be next.

How boring it would be not to look forward with expectations for the future.

My dog is hoping for retina in the iPad3, but isn't expecting it till the 4th one.

Coll, has no reference to anything I posted, win!

You people all make me laugh when you say "this isn't possible with today's production", blah blah, like you are all industry experts and have some kind of inside information. Bah! Who expected the iPhone to get a retina display of such high resolution? Exactly, nobody. Details didn't trickle out until just before the launch. I'm sure if you asked pundits a month or two prior, they would have also dismissed the idea as impossible.

A retina display for iPad would never be possible based on what we are told by the media is available today. The reason is because nobody has taken the first step to mass produce these things. Before Apple launched the iPhone 4, nobody was mass producing those panels either. Now look. So yes, it's coming, and I hope it's coming in September. Either way, whenever the iPad 3 hits, it will contain a retina display. It's the natural progression of the technology and we are already seeing and hearing about retina-like 9.7 screens coming out of Samsung... The writing is on the wall.

I love the fact that you want us to ignore other speculation, but accept your speculation.

As someone just said, you blast people with "like you are all industry experts and have some kind of inside information. Bah!"

Then give us what you expect with absolutely no facts and just rumors.

So....why are you even remotely better than the people you blast? Just because?

The thing is many of us do work in IT fields and know a lot about this stuff. If there are high resolution monitors out there that desktop or laptop graphics cards have trouble displaying games on its perfectly logical that an iPad with such a screen wouldn't be able to run games on it.

You also have to look at how much resources the OS alone uses, then see how much is left over for a game or app to do its thing. The technology simply isn't there yet unfortunately.

Also when you see other companies coming out with things like screens not only does it have to run well, but it has to run well on the device its attached to.

Add to that that the Samsung display was not yet ready for production (current displays don't have especially high yields as it is), lacked any information on pricing, battery drain (aside from a cryptic "40% less" (less than what??)) and viewability. And nobody's seen Samsung's PenTile technology in a working, mass-produced tablet yet so it's hard to say if it's "retina" like in practical use.

Samsung was doing a little "look at me" presentation to keep themselves relevant. That doesn't mean the display will be cheap enough, mass-producible or energy efficient enough to appear in the next iPad.

Scaling tech at this level is not so simple. Just because someone can produce a 4" "retina" display doesn't mean you can translate that to 10" with just a little more effort.

Just wondering.

The whole hype and expectation engine on the forums seems to almost be guaranteeing a Retina Display 2048x1536 for the iPad3 next March.

It was almost expected, rather hopefully for iPad2, but as we know it was a bit early for it, and it never happened.

Unless Apple are living in a different world, they must know everyone is expecting this new 4x screen res for the next model. As that's going to be it's BIG point.

I don't think anyone is expecting much on Weight, Battery life, Physical size.
The only things for iPad3 are Better Camera's, better chipset and the retina display.
Those are the 3 box's I feel most are expecting will be ticked by the new model.
Oh and perhaps a 128GB model, though with Apple's premium on the price of memory that's going to bump it up a LOT for a 128GB model.

Does anyone feel that it's still going to be too early for retina display even next year, and there is just not going to be the chipset power to drive it, and/or there is just not going to be the screens in mass production to supply the numbers Apple will be wanting?

I get the feeling it's going to be a major MAJOR disappointment if Retina does not happen for iPad3.

Thoughts?

I would like a retina display, but if it doesn't happen, not really a big deal for me. What I am most looking for is a USB port for my thumb drive as well as flash support, though a friend said that the bit about flash may not happen.

Well if the forum expected it to have a retina display, how dare Apple not include it and for this that is why iPad sales are suffering.

LOL!!!

It's not a matter of "possible" but one of "at what price"? Samsung's Pen-tile screen is not readily usable in an iPad as we know it and they omitted important facts like cost and yields.

It takes more than a few months to go from "look at what we can do" to "we can do it in volume at the price you want to pay."

Very good point.

I'd like to repeat something: I would really like a USB port for my thumb drive. I don't understand the lack of one, it makes no sense from my vantage point. Can someone give me some insight as to why Apple doesn't put one in the iPad?

One last question: Based on your reading here and on other sites, what are the chances that any future iPad releases will have larger hard drives?

Thanks for reading:)!

Flash support will never happen.
You can use Apple's camera kit to connect thumb drives to the iPad to xfer pictures (from a DCIM folder). But remember there's no real file system to use to browse the other contents of a thumb drive (without a jail break). You can always upload a file to Dropbox or iDisk and download to the iPad that way, too.

Well, it is nice to see that the ipad2 is finally out in significant numbers. Even I can get one now! sigh... not of course if there will be an update in three months....
