If what this article is saying is true, then I somehow feel the iPad OS instead of being efficient and modern, is actually a bloatware and memory hog. I mean, I can do multi tasking with multiple windows on 4gb ram 13inch macbook pro released in mid 2012, with no problem, i'm not joking, i used it during the lockdown time 2020. But if a modern iPad OS with a modern chips like a A12Z cant handle multi tasking then i feel something is wrong somewhere.

Why do people care, right guys

Stage Manager turns iPadOS into a Mac

Keep iPad the way it was always intended, if you want overlapping windows and external display support, get a Mac

Apple says that its new iPad Pro is “more powerful than most Windows PC laptops”

By Ben Rogerson ( Computer Music , Future Music ) published March 18, 2020
11- and 12.9-inch models promise the highest performance yet seen in an iPad

Yet, Apple Claims State Manager needs specs not found in the iPad 2020. Why - it can't do windows like the PC can do windows - efficient code that does not need 16GB ram and an M1 chip - a compromised version of windows on an overpriced tablet.

You can do it on a 2000 windows or linux laptop too. iPad can't handle multiple windows. Old 2000 laptop can. Heck even Windows 95 can.

Also new MacBooks can only output to 1 monitor but 13 year old laptops can support dual monitor. Apple really dropped the ball.

I hope they get this mod working and I am curious with what excuse Apple comes up with then.

Why can’t they just be honest and say they don’t care about existing sold hardware and just want to sell more M1 iPads by making features exclusive.
They’ve been completely honest. You’ve just been belligerent.

Once someone gets the switch working so users can test it, it will be immediately apparent why it was canned for other devices.

A UK consumer champion has launched a £750 million ($907 million) legal claim against Apple over the 2017 iPhone throttling controversy that saw a software update effectively slow down older devices (via The Guardian).

I feel there is a lawsuit potential here - they are blaming the M! chip but we know the iPad 2020 is capable of competing against PC laptops ( faster than, they say) but I suspect it is code to try to force users to upgrade - this is what the real controversy is about - throttling iPad Pro 2020's and we are not buying their explanation anymore in light of their prior nefarious activity.

Planned obsolescence is a terrible road to continue going down
This is not planned obsolescence. When you bought an iPad, you bought for what it could do at the time, not what it would potentially do in the future. Not having Stage Manager on non-M1 iPad do not remove any feature from you that you already have. You even get some newer features with iPadOS 16. If Stage Manager is important for you, you can upgrade to a M1 iPad, but Apple is not accelerating the obsolescence of your current device. If you don't fall in the Apple marketing where you always need the latest feature, you can be very happy with any iPad you own for many years.

Apple is giving users free new functionalities, so they have the right to decide which iPads get them or not, even if it's a pure marketing play (which I doubt it's only that here). Of course, I want features to be released on most iPads, even the older ones, but I can understand that there can be some limitations. I prefer to deal with these limitations than be stuck with the exact same OS for all my iPad lifetime.

People in the last year or so were complaining that Apple is not taking advantage of the power of M1. Now that Apple is delivering features that takes advantage of its processing power and its RAM, people complain that some features can only be unlocked with M1 iPads? This is kind of ridiculous.

regulate apple and break it down like we did with at&t
So it can be built back up to the same thing 20 years later?

unfortunately Apple isn't a telco (well it kind of is). And it's not a media/news company (well it kind of is via Apple News+). And it's not a video company (Apple TV+).

um...

I sure hope, that feature will stay in the GM and some jailbreak will bring it to users. I wouldn't get my hopes ip for it to work well on iPads with a meagre 3gb of ram, although older computers and jailbreak features have shown that you can do multiple windows with hardware at that level. I just don't think that stage manager itself is optimized to work below m1/8gb

I’ve been using stage manager since its release..haven’t used the old way since… I guess I’m the odd minority here it’s a pretty dope feature I personally have been waiting years for, but I also don’t like to complain. lol

It feels increasingly more and more like there is a small group of people who bought the 2020 iPad Pro, knowing fully well that it was basically the same 2018 iPad Pro with a new dash of paint, and are now pretending to be surprised that it's basically sharing the same update roadmap as the 2018 iPad Pro because shocker, they are both essentially one and the same, spec-wise.

They are angry that their 2020 iPad Pro isn't getting anything over and beyond what my 2018 iPad Pro will be getting. They are trying to pin the blame on Apple for "forced obsolescence" because it's either that or admit that it was really their own oversight and they have only themselves to blame for having made the wrong assumptions when buying said iPad 2 years back.

Forgive yourself and move on. Life is too short to be losing your collective minds over something like a single feature not coming to your iPad.

Nefarious activity indeed. Come on...

Because thats too honest. Thats why it is being done as they've done this in the past. Its fine for that to be a reason, they're literally just creating an issue that doesn't need to exist by saying it isn't.

Its not really about power, it’s about efficiency, also those Intel Macs come at the very least with 8GBs of RAM that they can swap freely.
There’s also much less of an expectation that a computer will never slow down - people are much more tolerant of computers freezing up when you do too much with them - tablets not so much

Also that was just a footnote, my actual hypothesis was about software - not hardware.
Well sure but it is more efficient and powerful , but the m1 iPad con do it with the same software. There is likely zero software reasons for it, and only hardware reasons. And iPad Pro (4th edition)2020 have 6gb ram and should be able to to the same things.

Apple a12z is competitive to the 10800-12900 intel processors for a fraction of the power

@sorgo Thoughts on this? Another article did end up getting posted. Did you change your mind yet?
I do think the near-constant coverage is getting a bit silly at this point but also, ultimately, that Apple should leave the choice/option up to users who care. Who knows, with certain Display Accommodations enabled (such as Reduce Transparency and Reduce Motion, both of which I use) and with no external display it might work quite well on more limited iPad models given how well Apple typically optimizes things.

This is the right conclusion I think. I dgaf about stage manager specifically, but I think it is right to feel duped by Apple after they've spent the better part of a decade touting the iPad as computer replacement while completely failing to make iPadOS a proper full-featured OS.

And you saw spinning beachballs and apps bouncing in the dock.

iPad users expect immediate response. That’s part of the appeal.

Well somebody is obviously lying.

Ether the iPad Pro with the a12z are to weak to provide the power needed for a function computers have done since the 90s or the iPad is more powerful than 90%+ of laptops sold in 2020
