The 2020 iPad Pro is technically just the previous gen, it’s not fair that it doesn’t get this feature. It’s a $1000 device!
The 2020 iPad Pro should have rung alarm bells when it came out with essentially the same chip as the 2018 model. This kind of thing was always expected (although I was expecting a loss of iPadOS at the same time as the 2018 model rather than this so soon).

Same thing can probably be said for the iPhone 14 / 14 max - if it retains the A15 chip while the Pros go on to A16, then avoid it cost the same kind of crap will likely happen...

I don't even care about the external display, I just want the switching on my Mini and was sorely disappointed when I found out it wasn't available on my iPad.

I can see why people are upset but I strongly suspect this is because of the M1’s increased memory (at least 8GB) and support for the new swap feature that was mentioned yesterday too. In short, desktop-like windowing needs a desktop-like CPU. But the good news is that from this point on, all “serious” iPads will have at least the M1.
it was said in the keynote, its because of the virtual memory swap feature of the M1

This was mostly expected. I suspect it's more a RAM issue along with the extra power of the M1. 2018 iPad Pros have 4GB of RAM, unless you have one of the 1TB models which have 6GB. All 2020 models have 6GB. 2021 Pros have 8GB or 16GB depending on your selection, plus the M1 itself... Whether the A series could technically handle it is a different story. They probably can, but not to Apple's performance standards. I'm still holding onto my 2018 11" Pro until they release it with the mini or micro LED displays. M2 is ready so we'll likely see the M2 Pros in the fall.
RAM is the primary reason the 2018/2020 iPad Pros don't really multitask very well when switching between apps, and bringing this feature to them would just highlight it.

When I switched to the 2021 iPad Pro, I didn't miss this about my 2018 iPad Pro at all:

*Fill out a form online and switch to another application for a reference, and switch back to the form to see the whole page reload.

*Watch a show on Netflix, then pause to browse the Internet for a few minutes, and then switch back to the Netflix to see it reload with the splash screen requiring me sign in again.

Kinda ridiculous a A15 iPad won’t be able to do this, not to mention the 2020 iPad Pro with A12z. Apple is just creating artificial requirements here. Considering the company even described the 2018 iPad Pro as having desktop class performance.

I am glad I was never in a rush to upgrade to a newer iPad from my iPad Pro 2017. I will eventually upgrade. But I’m gonna needle Apple a little bit and keep my current iPad until 2024.

One thing that is not in, but I hope they "fix", is that background apps still do not get any significant background cpu time. So if you push a remote desktop app off the screen to the side section, it will still time out after a minute or whatever horribly short interval Apple changed it to a few years back. At least you can keep them in "up front" windows in back behind others, though. So that's a step forward.

iPad is becoming a little PC for the masses with entry level Macbooks this expensive. I guess most people will be fine with apps and services.
The iPad is becoming a new class of device that is very flexible. If you aren't programming or using some desktop heavy application - the iPad with this new functionality -- you can leverage its mobile capability - light, use of Apple Pencil, different modes of input, camera, etc. Then when you want to work with a lot of screen real estate and a keyboard and mouse like a Mac - you can. iPadOS apps wont have all the features of those on the mac - but it can do things Mac Apps cannot in the iPad format.

I like how this is developing.

Curious how well this works in practice on a 11" iPad Pro vs the big one. The usable real estate with Stage Manager enabled is reduced quite a bit. Used with an external monitor, not an issue of course.

Hope the main app can take all the screen if I want it to, not only the center of the screen.

The 11" screen is too small to waste it with this left list of recently used apps.
Yes, you can let it take up the whole screen by just resizing it. Unfortunately, adding new app to the window stack right now isn't easy. Maybe later beta will improve upon it.

This reminds me--in concept if not in appearance--of a feature WebOS had. I think they were called cards, and a stack of cards could contain different apps. It worked well on my Pre.

Highly doubt that's the limitation and rather just a forced upgrade. 2015 Galaxy S6 with 3GB RAM could do six foreground windows (two browsers, movie playback, Twitch, file manager, Google Maps) and also background tasks (file server, media server).

It's like the new CarPlay. Anyone that thinks that you will be able to upgrade older cars are nuts. The hardware stack and interconnects to the cars other systems may require you to buy a new model compatible with it. I'm sure some one will buy an $80K BMW and two months later a new model with this new CarPlay functionality will arrive and piss that person off. That is tech at Apple.

As for the M1 probably has something to do with how the system handles memory use for multi windowing

any bets on an M1 iPad mini this fall ?

I don’t want to see it go without the multitasking features

Not even sure stage manager is all that craiged up to be….
"craiged" typo or pun?

And it is basically expose+spaces for iPadOS, which also makes it expose+space for iPad for mac Ventura.

I really doubt I want to lose all that space along the left edge for those stacks on either iPadOS or macOs.

This doesn’t actually bother me as much as I thought it would.
The iPad Pro is crazy expensive, it should get more functionality than $329 iPads.
However there is a small caveat.
I am very much annoyed that A12Z iPad Pro‘s that aren’t even two years old don’t get these features.
They use that exact same processor for the Apple Silicon transition kit to run a complete version of macOS, so it is absolutely possible.
It’s a real shame they’re leaving those customers who paid just as much or around the same amount for their 2020 iPad pros as those who purchased the 2021 iPad pros.

I don't think it's about fairness. What I find really really terrible is that the A12Z could easily handle the feature too and they're just gate keeping it 'because'

I just bought an iPad, and with this non-update Apple already made it obsolete.
No need to say I'm quite angry.
I really hope Apple will reconsider.

they already mentioned it’s because m1 has faster storage which allows for virtual swap

the dev kit had 16gb ram
Ok? The M1 iPad Pro has 8GB, the A12Z iPad Pro has 6Gb. The difference would have been just fine.

It's 100% a business decision. Apple does this all the time.

It's fine....but kinda funny to hear them talk about recycling etc when they pull moves like that. Gate keeping features for no reasons is bad for the environment because it decreases the value of their existing hardware

I’ll try it out this fall on my iPad Air 5. Might replace the need to look at the MacBooks and consider an M2 iMac in the future to replace my 2018 Mac mini.

iOS and iPadOS are definitely getting some decent upgrades for a change. Lots of APIs for developers to use too, I can’t recall a WWDC where they had one for every feature now.

It still feels like baby steps for the iPad, but I would imagine it’s a difficult concept to move the iPad into this realm. They should merge the iPadOS and macOS together for something scaleable rather than attempting to build out iOS. Put ALL M-series chips into the iPads too, even the mini.
