Overlapping windows makes zero sense on the iPad.

Let iPad be iPad and let Mac be Mac. This is so stupid.

People who want iPad to be a Mac are insufferable. Just buy a Mac.
To the contrary, overlapping windows is the only thing that makes sense. Some of us do real work on iPads because of their portability and cellular connectivity.

Perhaps they need to have the option to choose which OS goes on them?

Overlapping windows make zero sense on iPad Minis, for instance.

So then turn it off. I dont understand your complaint its off by default or rather you get to choose. If you don't want overlapping windows youll never have to see them. But for people who want to do real work on it its a great option that makes the ipad much more useful.

I literally filed a feedback a couple days ago and asked for the same thing!

Yep.. Way too much listening to the podcasting/blogging types who bent themselves into a pretzel to try to do Mac things on iPads.

Just buy a Mac.

Exactly. I mean Apple could easily put a switch in Settings that switches between different types of multitasking. I never understood why they took away Split Screen and Slide Over. The gestures were really easy and natural, and I used them all the time.

What's insufferable about wanting a touch oriented device that has the functionality of a laptop? Sounds to me like you're projecting.

I'm sure shareholders worried about segment cannibalization are happy with your sentiment but there's no shortage of people who would either like the ipad to have mac level functionality or a macbook with a touchscreen.

I understand the complaint about slide over getting killed off but the split screen gestures on windowing mode plus the green button make it painless. What does splitscreen have that the windowing button/ swipe gestures is lacking.

Just like people who bought a Mac to be an Apple II back in the late 1980s. The Mac was just a toy, where as DOS and Apple II were the real computers.

No thanks. iPadOS is optimized for this form factor. No need for macOS; tablets are different than laptops, and we all remember Windows 8
You can easily have an iPadOS skin to keep the panicky happy. No point having novice users restrict more experienced users for sure. BTW, Windows 8 is irrelevant.

Except they literally do offer this option? On first boot as well, or the first time you update to 26.
In fact, the new “full screen” mode is as close to the original Jobsian iPad vision as has been available since 2015, no multitasking, no window ornaments, no menu bars, no dock within apps.
Just applications that take up the full screen, only way you can get between them is via gestures or the home screen. Just like the old days of the iPad2 or the original mini.

Man I hope you can disable this. I hated the 'feature' before, and if it combines with windows, it's going to be a massive pain.

I just want the iOS 18 system back, 1:1, as an option. Since the iPadOS apps already need to support arbitrary resizing for windowed mode it should only be a pain for Apple, not 3rd party developers. I don't want to deal with windows on a tablet, and I'm annoyed we're being subject exclusively to the whims of people who want to use it as a Mac replacement with a case that costs over $300. This solution that brings back slide over takes like twice as many steps to activate for an inferior experience, and there is still no easy way to activate Split View.

They do.
There is regular full screen mode, for those who just want the iPad to be as iPad as it can be, nothing but an iPad and only an iPad like we’re in 2010 again.
There’s “windowed” that now contains both split view and slide over.
And then there’s “stage manager”.
You can even put the control inside of the control center, or create a shortcut/focus mode to swap between them.
I seriously don’t understand the problem.
I keep hearing that it takes “so many more taps”, but I don’t understand how.
For split view, press and hold green button and click left or right. It’s that simple.

Victory at last! For those not using the beta release, this functionality is being restored rather quickly. I’m pretty sure this is the result of the Apple execs missing it on their iPads, and demanding it be brought back.
