MacBook Air has the same m4 chip. MacBook Air has more memory too. MacBook Air is more powerful.
MacBook Air more powerful than MacBook Pro and macs such as Mac Studio? Nah

And maybe some people don’t wanna buy 2 macs… also MacBook Air is bigger than iPad !

I literally took my MacBook with my Wacom to Starbucks this morning and worked faster on serious work than an iPad Pro with Pencil. Zero portability is hilarious.

And using Apple Pencil for git issues is ridiculous.
I mentioned lounging next to my pool with a cigar not sitting at a table with an overpriced coffee. Using an apple pencil allows me to instantly highlight issues and make suggestions especially UI/UX. Could I write out exactly what I want, sure but showing is better.

*GAK*

The fact that Slide Over was not a function that could be disabled is the reason why I never used “multitasking” on the iPad. Fingers crossed that I never have to use it, voluntarily or not, if it’s added back in. Detest is too kind a word for how I feel about it.

So then turn it off. I dont understand your complaint its off by default or rather you get to choose. If you don't want overlapping windows youll never have to see them. But for people who want to do real work on it its a great option that makes the ipad much more useful.
But realistically a Mac is still better for ‘real’ work. And windowing on a 11” or smaller iPad without a keyboard/trackpad is largely unworkable.

Regardless, it was completely unnecessary to remove slide over because the gestures used would not have interfered with anything else (as it stands the right side swipe in gesture is a ‘dead’ area).

Makes zero sense for /you/.

Let people use the iPad the way they want
But they didn’t let people use their iPad the way they want, they removed the functionality of slide over and Split View for no reason (the gestures would not interfere with the current implementation). So you’re happy to let people use it they way they want as long as it’s your way.

This:

“To use Slide Over in iPadOS 26.1, you'll need to tap on the green icon of an app's window to open up the window sizing controls. From there, you can tap on the "Enter Slide Over" button.”

…is ridiculously convoluted vs what we have on iPadOS 18 and earlier. But it is something. Also you only have one app. Here’s hoping for the sake of those who update (I don’t) that Apple brings back full functionality with iPadOS 26.2.

They do.
There is regular full screen mode, for those who just want the iPad to be as iPad as it can be, nothing but an iPad and only an iPad like we’re in 2010 again.
There’s “windowed” that now contains both split view and slide over.
And then there’s “stage manager”.
You can even put the control inside of the control center, or create a shortcut/focus mode to swap between them.
I seriously don’t understand the problem.
I keep hearing that it takes “so many more taps”, but I don’t understand how.
For split view, press and hold green button and click left or right. It’s that simple.

This is how it takes ‘so many more taps’ to initiate an inferior version of slide over.

It’s as though the concept of “Productivity” strikes fear into the company that loves frivolous animations, cutesy emojis and pastel colored devices.

Good. Multitasking on the iPad has always been a trainwreck but slideover was the only multitasking thing that I could sort of use without frustration. The vast majority of the time I want one app in full screen, and to have another app open that I can quickly glance at (like notes or a PDF document) regularly. The problem with split screen is that it's "permanent" so you can't make the second app go away with a tap. If you use windowing, then apps slide behind other apps and getting them back is annoying, since the iPad lacks the robust window managements of macOS (a useable exposé and spaces), or the screen size to always have some of the window poking out from behind another window. Slideover kind of fixes all of these problems by letting you go back and forth between an app without losing the full screen one. Still isn't perfect but that's just because the iPad is not great at window management, and never will be, without the precision of a mouse and a large display with small window elements like on a Mac.

I just wish there was a way to use slideover in "full screen apps", without having to enable windowing and the useless traffic light icons. Windowing on the iPad Mini is just way overkill, there are far too many elements on screen and not enough space to use them. The ability to resize windows from any corner also means it's way too easy to accidentally do it, and you lose the corner gestures that were actually useful.

To the contrary, overlapping windows is the only thing that makes sense. Some of us do real work on iPads because of their portability and cellular connectivity.
Even when I’m not doing “real work”, I’ve already had several instances where having overlapping windows saved time. I’m liking this new SlideOver because ANY app can enter into SlideOver. There’s no special list of SlideOver apps and devs will appreciate not having to do anything for a user to SlideOver their app.

Victory at last! For those not using the beta release, this functionality is being restored rather quickly. I’m pretty sure this is the result of the Apple execs missing it on their iPads, and demanding it be brought back.
Apple execs already knew it was “coming back”. The development process has many milestones and this iteration of SlideOver wasn’t intended for the initial release. And, they’ve likely been using Stage Manager instead of SlideOver anyway and never missed it! :)

Man I hope you can disable this. I hated the 'feature' before, and if it combines with windows, it's going to be a massive pain.
Even if you can’t disable it, you can avoid choosing “Enter Slide Over”. Well, I guess unless you mess up on your way to tap “Add Another Window” and accidentally tap “Enter Slide Over” instead. (Was that one word with an intercap previously?)

Except us users who don't use the feature that Apple has spent over a decade of engineering hours on to attempt to get it right miss out on value that would have been generated had they not attempt to implement this useless feature.
They have a wide user base and while the feature is useless to you. It’s not to a lot of other people.

Not sure why people struggle to comprehend this.

Except they literally do offer this option? On first boot as well, or the first time you update to 26.
In fact, the new “full screen” mode is as close to the original Jobsian iPad vision as has been available since 2015, no multitasking, no window ornaments, no menu bars, no dock within apps.
Just applications that take up the full screen, only way you can get between them is via gestures or the home screen. Just like the old days of the iPad2 or the original mini.
People want the original Split View and Slide Over as an option. The new method of multitasking is great for mouse and keyboard, but I find it very cumbersome for touch use compared to the original methods.
