Your handwriting is crystal clear relative to my chicken scratch. I used to send out the PDF version of my meeting notes via Noteability but got so much flack from friends and customers alike that it looked like it was written by a deranged pharmacist.

:D Somehow a deranged or drunk pharmacist's handwriting brings to mind a really bad image.... :apple:

Thanks for the heads up, I think I'll try out the app! For the longest time I didn't know there was a plastic cover on top of the receiver lol

I've been following this product and this thread for a while now. Today i came across this video on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ-6cC4V4HQ
It looks allmost like the Cregle iPen and the By-zero Studio. Also it used in the app from by-zero. This makes me believe these are all 99% identical products, and the ipad propably doesn't even know the difference between the different recievers.

So maybe you can try out the Cregle iPen in the Studio Basic app from by-zero? It has a free lite version.

I tried to use the Studio Basic app... it recognized that the receiver was plugged in but would not recognize the iPen itself... so it appears that the iPen will not operate on that app... must have a proprietary usage. :(

Ok, thanks for trying. We'll just have to wait for more apps to support the ipen then.

I'm waiting for my first ipad wich i'll get this friday (second launch round). I wan't to use it for note-taking, but i'm still undicided between a ipen or a jot.

There are presently 3 apps that I am aware of that work with the iPen (Ghostwriter, Ibispaint & GoodNotes) and more are due but so far GoodNotes is the best of the three. All the c-type styli that I have tried cannot write as well as the iPen - but I haven't used the Jot.

Good luck on your new iPad!

GoodNotes (paid version) works surprisingly well on my iPad 1 for writing. I can't write full speed but close to it. I guess I can get used to the very small lag.

The lag in GoodNotes with the iPen is actually less than the lag in Ghostwriter using my finger.

The say the iPen implementation is in beta but so far I'm happy with it.

GoodNotes just upgraded their app to have retina display and a beta iPen ability.

The GoodNotes calibration is really good... they allow multiple points and you can keep calibrating until you are satisfied with the tracking. I hit the various points about 10 times and the tracking was really good... this renews my hope that iPen will actually become a useful writing stylus.

Hurray. Too bad I threw my pen in the garbage over the weekend. I wanted my money back, but they refused, since I didn't have all the original packaging.

This company hardly ever answered my emails, was not courteous in the least, and I'm out $100 for a stylus that I believe is next to worthless. I can buy FIVE Pogo+s for that amount of money, they work in every program, the product works perfectly, and the company is MUCH nicer.

I am really really sorry I ever did business with Cregle. I wish I could wipe my memory of this bad experience from my mind forever.

One hundred dollars I will never see again, got zero ROI from, and a product certainly no one would buy from me knowing its use and performance were so limited.

If only they had just waited 6 months and gotten a bunch of developers on board.

But of course one thing is usually like all the other things. In this case, their business plan is as bad as their product.

downloaded the lite version of goodnotes

it is SOOO much better than ghostwriter
a bit faster and its like the PERFECT combo imo

good info on the Cregle iPen, thanks!

I was unsure about buying the iPen, but after reading a review at: http://applebitsblog.com/2012/03/18/cregle-ipen-review-digitizer-pen-for-the-ipad/ I finally decided to pull the trigger. Can't wait till it arrives, I hope they send my tracking number soon. I'll let you guys know what I think after I try it out.

;)

Thanks for sharing the link for this review. I don't normally comment on these sites, but I've been following the iPen since their kickstarter project started and have been hoping for a solid review before I buy.

They mentioned they would be reviewing the By-Zero Studio Pen soon too as well, can't wait!

here is my quick test. I kept thinking im going to return my iPen now, im almost sure I'm going to keep it.
I'll post either a video review or screenshots today
Don't mind the handwriting its almost exactly my normal one, from the picture it looks like my normal handwriting.
When I was writing I kept thinking that is is a 90% match but after its done its like a 99% match.

And here is a video of Goodnotes along with ibisPainx both lite version and both are beta for iPen

I bought the Cregle iPen before I decided on getting the iPad or the New iPad, but ultimately went with the iPad 2. I saw the videos on kickstarter and on youtube and it looked pretty impressive.

This past week I finally got my iPad in my physical hands and right away, decided to test out the iPen. I stayed away from Ghostwriter as everyone seems to detest it and I didn't want to pay for it :D Plus from what I've read, it only has one calibration point so no thanks.Thankfully there was the Ibis paint app that everyone was talking about and I decided to have a go at it. Granted, I'm not the most skilled artist but it seemed to work decently, more better suited for writing than drawing but of course that app was designed for drawing and not writing :p It just seemed iffy.

THEN, came along Goodnotes and the beta update for iPen. I must say the 4 main calibration points and the extra points *for your own comfort* made the iPen dramatically better! I've been using it awhile now and it works pretty damn good once the calibration is set. It works very fluidly; much more so than the Ibis and I would assume, Ghostwriter. At first though, I felt as though my handwriting was shaky, but I really believe its the preset tips the app uses. Overall, the iPen works very well with Goodnotes.

Here are some of my notes. :)

i think the cregle guys made a critical mistake by letting themselfs be fully dependent on app developers. The fist app for the iPen (Ghostwriter) is a desaster and gave the iPen a really bad image. And even Goodnotes although working quite well certainly can be tweaked a bit more.

Cregle should have developed a very simple writing app that shows that the iPen actually works and that there is no lag if programmed properly.

I'm sticking with it because I think when app developers optimize their programs it will work quite well.

BTW: sometimes when the guide dot is off by half an inch a tiny rotation of the iPen brings it back on track immediately.

I'm wondering...why do I still get email notifications from this thread with all the latest (new) replies? Must be karmic retribution for hating the product.

I apologize for this posting, but it's my last-ditch attempt to unsubscribe to a thread that MacRumors says I'm not even subscribed to.

Yes, good notes is far superior to ghostwriter with the iPen. Thanks ... Looks pretty good.

My lord you complain a lot.

Anyways, I ordered an ipen and it's already on its way. I'm hoping to go paperless @ work with this stylus. Goodnotes seems like a great app.

My questions for those already using one:

- can you still interact with the iPad with your finger while the receiver is plugged in and goodnotes is running? What about when using other apps that aren't compatible? I don't want to keep plugging and unplugging the receiver.

- does goodnotes allow you to use the zoom input feature with the ipen? I understand the calibration towards the bottom of the screen is a bit sketchy, so is the zoom feature unusable? Or is it just unnecessary with the ipen due to how precise it is?

Full review of the By-Zero Studio Pen & Cregle iPen!!

AppleBits has posted their full review of the By-Zero Studio Pen (Cregle iPen review on there as well)! They're definitely the most thorough reviews I've read for the devices yet and both cover a lot of the questions in this thread.

Check it out!

Thanks. Just read their post that AppleBits is going to be reviewing Adonit's Jot Touch next month.

I've read that pinch and zoom will work. Hope to know myself soon as I expect my iPen to arrive any day now. Still haven't recieved a tracking number....litle worried. Want to use my iPen in class to take notes.

Does this thing really work?

I've been contemplating the iPen but worried about the $$. My boyfriend bought me a stylus and its terrible for sketching. Cregle's kickstarter page says its just like a "ball-point" pen (see below), is this true? I've been reading mixed reviews??? Does anyone here have the iPen and is it worth the money? I've looked at others like this and they're hella expensive!

"Precision handwriting,
**************** Just like a high-quality ball-point pen!

The Cregle iPen transforms the iPad into a content creation device, not just a content consumption device. iPen is the first active digitizer stylus that allows you to write with precision directly on the iPad. Unlike the passive digitizer used in the typical iPad stylus, iPen writes like a real pen with accurate positioning and palm rejection features that passive products simply cannot achieve.

With the Cregle iPen’s active digitizer, the attached receiver picks up the iPen’s signal and its precise position as it hovers above the screen (whereas a passive stylus can be located only when the user touches the screen). This crucial advantage allows iPen to actively transmit 60 samples per second to pinpoint the pen’s exact location."
