Now after several days of using the iPen I am becoming more and more disappointed in GhostWriter ... the single calibration point is just simply not sufficient to keep the iPen tracking close enough. I wrote out the below and several times I had to stop and recalibrate the iPen. I really hope that the upcoming apps will prove better or that GhostWriter will do an update that better utilizes the iPen. To be honest... after using several styli I am disappointed that there is not a better way to do handwriting on the iPad.

I just received my iPen today as well. The limitation of using only GhostWriter is disappointing. I am using my new Jot Pro for other apps. Well, at least for now.

iAnnotate seems to be very promising for PDF.

I hope this one works out better, bluetooth 4.0 will conserve battery life as well.

It would be nice to have a narrow tip instead of round one. I think Jot Touch or iPen has better tips. But the LED color indicator on the Blue Tiger is a nice touch.

Still waiting on my new iPad (out for delivery) so that I can test out the iPen on it... I'll let you guys know when I know.

Really don't see the point in the LED on the pen, hopefully it's not too draining on the battery.

Having a capacitive stylus with a nib the size of the iPen will never work (with the current models), and they probably went with the rubber nib instead of a Jot Touch like nib for several reasons:

-"Safer" for the screen (read some comments about the Jot Touch leaving scratches from use)
-Easier to implement pressure sensitivity
-No fixed angle of the nib (this could be fixed easily though, but would be harder if you wanted pressure sensitivity as well).

New iPad & iPen

Just a quick note but I rec'd my iPad3 today and quickly tried out the iPen on it... not only does it function with the New iPad but it performs better than it did on the iPad2 ... apparently the screen resolution made a big difference.

Which app should I use it with?Only ghostwriter?

Excellent news Moxier....event he makers (Crengle) weren't sure it would work properly with the iPad 3rd Gen.

Really? Someone on the Kickstarter comment page said the exact opposite. Text was disappearing then reappearing, not any faster than on the iPad 2 etc.

I did experience having to calibrate several times until the dot aligned with the tip...

Here's a sample I did...

But, I still have to say, that the experience falls short of a pen writing on paper. And they are going to have to do a lot of improvements to the iPen.

im thinking about buying it and trying it lol
how much better in your opinion?

Please don't. I am returning mine. The iPen is so hard to use.

First off, it requires CONSTANT calibration. You must hold the iPen EXACTLY the way you calibrated it when you write which is not ideal. It lags so much when you write.

Second, GhostWriter app provides limited features. The UI is not very user friendly. For now, you are stuck with only ONE compatible bad app.

Third, I expected more polished product for $90 that I paid.

I will use my Jot Pro instead.

Real Pen > Jot Pro >>>>>>> iPen

Ibis Paint Now w/ipen

Ibispaint just updated their app.. it now uses iPen... and it has three calibration points... it far outperforms Ghostwriter. But still has a way to go... BUT things are improving.....

Moxier, thanks for keeping us updated on your progress with this. Looking at this and where the ten one guys go with their Bluetooth one.

I like the idea of the Bluetooth pen... and the fact that you don't have to plug in a receiver ...

I received my pen on Wednesday Night and tried to use it on my iPad 2. I had little success in doing it and was ready to send the pen back, but I contacted them and they sent me an e-mail explaining what the problem is.

There is a plastic film on the receiver face that has to be removed before work. This of course is not mentioned in the rather extremely abbreviated owners instructions that come with the pen. this is not the plastic cover that is over the connector on the receiver, this is a thin film that is on the face of the receiver itself.

On Friday I received my new iPad and today I tried using the pen with it to see if it would work, and of course was greatly disappointed. The pen Will not properly calibrate in Ghostwriter on the new iPad, and when it did mark it would mark an inch or two away from where the Shadow. When it did mark, sometimes it would stop marking in the middle of a word or letter. I was totally frustrated and ready to send the pen back.

I then read Moxie's posting on this forum and downloaded the Ibispaint app and tried it. The pen calibrated properly and worked as well as could be expected. It still is a work in progress, but it is far superior to Ghostwriter.

I would recommend not wasting your money on Ghostwriter until they have it working properly. Instead I would go with Ibispaint, which is a free app, and work with that.

I now plan to keep that then for a while and see what happens. Thank you Moxie!

P.S. just for everyone's information I wrote most of this post using the new dictation feature on the new iPad. It works much better than the iPen, LOL :D.

So I've read this entire thread am interested in hearing someone's opinion about how compatible the sensor is with stand iPad cases. I'm guessing you'll need to remove your cases before using this :-(.

Regarding the screen protectors, I currently use a Wacom DTU1631 to draw on. Obviously this is not an iPad, but one touchy-feely thing that is an issue is that the glass surface you're writing on is totally smooth and somewhat slippery. This is NOT at all like writing on paper and I would recommend an anti-glare cover on the iPad just to restore the usual sensation of writing on paper and provide a bit of much needed friction for the wrist. When you write on smooth glass your wrist invariably slides down as you draw straight horizontal lines and it's especially an issue when you're doing accurate technical drawings.

GoodNotes & iPen

GoodNotes just upgraded their app to have retina display and a beta iPen ability.

The GoodNotes calibration is really good... they allow multiple points and you can keep calibrating until you are satisfied with the tracking. I hit the various points about 10 times and the tracking was really good... this renews my hope that iPen will actually become a useful writing stylus.

Here is my first and quick trial page....on my New iPad....

Ipen w/goodnotes

Here I slowed down and tried to actually use it as a note taker... (my handwriting is very bad so someone neater is needed to show it)..

The other pic is the beta popup for the iPen.

Your handwriting is crystal clear relative to my chicken scratch. I used to send out the PDF version of my meeting notes via Noteability but got so much flack from friends and customers alike that it looked like it was written by a deranged pharmacist.
