Maybe someone has said this, but isn't placing the webpages on the home screen a pretty clear indication that the SDK is just going to be Web Apps still that you can put a button for on the home screen??? :( I think we will see another revolt if Apple pulls that!

Two totally unrelated items. "Pretty clear indication"? Nope. Meaningless.

reading through this entire thread of 'still missing features' and no one mentions the one I consider essential in a cell phone - voice dialing. I mean I haven't had a phone (i've kept) that couldn't do voice this millennium, its virtually the only way I dial.

Yet its obvious it is NOT on many people's 'must have' lists so probably why Apple has neglected it.

Oh well, guess I'll have to stick with Nokia and Sony for the foreseeable future. Do people really not use voice dialing?! Some have said they have difficulty using it but other than getting laryngitis or being in a really noisy environment I don't have a problem.

Darn, I'd really love to waste some money but with the new laws requiring handsfree in cars and just the incredible convenience of it I can't see dropping hundreds on a phone without it.

Anything you and 10 of your most distant acquaintances want will be doable once the SDK is out in two months.

Why would they make changes that are this big without updating the version number to something like 1.2? Usually when Apple introduces big features in a software version, they usually up the version number significantly higher than the previous so that it stands out more than just a little tiny .x.x update.

Safe to say, a lot of people are wondering the same thing. Might be a good question for the person who took the photos. He posted his email address a few pages back. Maybe he will include that in his follow up post.

woah

I'm a graphics designer and photographer. Seeing your channels analysis does make me believe that these are fake, but as a photographer the narrow depth of field used in low light with a macro lens looks very real. I'm on my sister's laptop, and she doesn't have photoshop, but I'll check out the images later and see if I can find any other discrepancies. I hope these aren't fake, but the reality of this update is rather believable. Nothing too crazy. Here's to hoping.

This is getting way too in depth. I'm just going to wait it out and play it by ear.

Maybe we should do a polygraph test too?

Well, i don't think including a floppy drive cost apple, or any other manufacturers much money. considering during the last legs of the life of 3.5 inch drives, they were costing around $20 to consumers, imagine what they cost wholesale? and in bulk?

It was more of "This technology is useless, it only allows for 1.44Mb of data, and the CD is much better suited to modern day use."

So, the same applies to MMS v Email, MMS doesn't allow for modern day high resolution images, it's not reliable in terms of how much data it will or will not allow (each network sets there own limits on how much data they'll accept). And as such Apple just thought.. "Lets not bother adding complexity to our user interface for essentially a dead technology, and instead lets focus on kicking ass at using email!"

At the end of the day, the reason the iPhone is good, is cause it's easy to use, and has a limited feature set. limited in sensible ways too, that help push technology forward, and not pander to old deprecated technologies such as MMS.

There's nothing complex about adding mms. Limited yes, complex I don't think so. I hear people complaining that the iPhone doesn't support mms, I doubt you would hear anyone saying wow this mms feature is so complex and useless/outdated if it was currently on the iPhone.

Thanks for the explanation but...

How is it any different than 360 updates? The 360 didn't play .avi files when I bought it, MS rolled out a free update a month ago that means it now does. Adding an unadvertised feature via firmware update for free is exactly what MS did without any trouble...

Microsoft probably accounts for Xbox sales the same way that Apple does, at least in some way.

I will agree with you that one, but in today's tech world much of the devices are and services are the same, leaving only a small amount of differences to choose from and to base a decision on.

When you slice reality really thin, the only thing seperating much of the devices are the company that makes them, the service provided with them if any, and the one or two gimmicky features that one has over the other.

For many, the lack of 3G, Flash, MMS, phone as modem, etc. made the decision to not go with the iPhone. For me, it's the lack of insurance on AT&T's network and phone as modem, and if the phone had those two features it would have been a lot easier to consider it as an option.

No doubt all those little features do make or break the sale for people. For me, I thought about holding out for 3G, until the European launch happened without 3G. At that point I said to myself well, do I want to wait another 6 months or more for 3G? The answer was no.

It's not the perfect phone, but it's by far the best. And when iPhone2 comes out, I'll sell my phone for $200 or so and buy the 3G one.

My point is that Apple is totally fine with some people not buying the phone until 3G - you can see the arc of the product developing nicely, giving people whose Verizon contracts are expiring good reasons every couple months to keep the sales rolling. I think it's all going according to plan for Apple.

I honestly think that Apple is trying to avoid confusion by leaving out MMS. SMS is there for those that love tho chat quick and on the fly. I believe that email is a far better way to send stuff like pics, which you could already do very efficiently with the iPhone.

I agree, but how many people have iPhones or email on their phone? MMS is for a quick pic on the fly.

Im both as well and you have to look at the whole image, not just the icon of the bookmark to realize the same chanel discrepancies are throughout the image - meaning they are artifacts of the compression - they are not evidence of a photoshop job - each and every icon on the home screen display's the same type of artifacts around the icons and the text - its not evidence of a fake IMO.

Hate to burst everyones bubble, but these are fake. One quick look in Photoshop and a look through the channels shows they have been altered. See attached image and you can see the difference of pixels in the Blue channel. The Gear Live icon is all pixelated in the black area compared to the rest. A box can be seen where they copied and moved the image.

Wish it was true, but Steve probably has something else up his sleeve.

it looks no worse at all than the calculator button above it, in the blue channel. There would be no reason to fake the calc button.

Well the pictures where edited in Photoshop CS3.

Save one of the pictures to iPhoto and then right click on it to get the photo info...

I don't know if the site that actually posted the pictures used Photoshop to put there logo on the pictures but if they didn't then it's fake.

sms delivery report

Nice updates, but I hope they will also add SMS delivery reports. They are very important to many users and most serious phones have that. I personally know a couple of people that liked the Iphone but didn't buy it because of that missing feature. In business sometimes you want to be sure your SMS arrives to destination.

If you are in the US, who cares if the iPhone does MMS. ATT does not do MMS. That whole thing of having to log on to the website to see the pic is the standard way MMS is handled by ATT.

What on earth are you talking about? My last 2 phones were from At&t and they both supported MMS...you are missing something...

Well if thats true (I don't think it is, but I came from Verizon), they can at least parse out that stupid message from AT&T and make it a direct link that launches Safari. Currently I need to either remember the crazy username/password, go back and forth and type it in, or write it down on a piece of paper. A "Click here to View" bubble like the new iChat in Leopard would be nice.

I looked at all the images as well and the compression artifacts are uniform in the image.

I dunno- we might have too high hopes for this SDK. I guess that only the super apple select developers could write simple games or internet based apps that would not have any access to phone functions like making calls or bluetooth. But hey, it would be nice! I'll take it.

Safe to say, a lot of people are wondering the same thing. Might be a good question for the person who took the photos. He posted his email address a few pages back. Maybe he will include that in his follow up post.

You know, I had wondered about it too- no where does it say 1.1.3. There is no pic of the version page as there had been in 1.1.1 rumors. Maybe the person who took the photos just assumed it was 1.1.3. I'm still hoping that it is simply an apple-internal-only interim release that will have much more by macworld! (I can dream, can't I?)

I agree with Apple's possible thinking behind MMS - MMS is a very limited technology. Very slow, standalone, proprietary, small/poor quality pictures.

They're trying to encourage a more content-rich and integrated experience by people using email.

The problem is, they're 5 years too early. Unfortunately, most people still don't have email on their phones, and MMS is here whether they like it or not.

I am a horrible photographer. The pictures were taken with a Nikon D80. The one I did a horrible unboxing video on, because I was just getting into DSLRs:

So is there anything else you can tell us??? Any unmentioned features like disk mode, copy paste, etc? Anything at all that you noticed??? :)

The grammer is just not Apple's..... like on the one picture where one of the buttons is "Mail Link to this Page"..... Apple would put something like "Share This Page" or just "Share" like it has now.

Has Apple ever included the word "Dismiss" to cancel an action, as is pictured on the Edit screen? I too am skeptical of this.

Perhaps the reason Apple hasn't released tons of new apps for the iPhone is simply to break it in. The interface itself is revolutionary enough, and perhaps they wanted to gauge peoples' reactions and also test the stability of the system. The more apps you include on launch, the more complicated it is to debug the system if things start to go wrong. By having just a few apps that they know work well, they can gradually add more functionality safely, step by step. As has been mentioned, one of the attractions of the iPhone is its simplicity. The more things it can do, the more confusing it can become.

Many things may have been done in photoshop. Bugging, cropping, resizing, color correcting, image type conversion. You're talking about images posted on the web. Just because it's a photoshop modified file, doesn't mean it was faked.

I'm just going to chime in with three words - MMS!
Apple should really have the basics down before the SDK is out, so some 3rd party doesn't have to make a weird version of it.

Multi-Recipient SMS
MMS
Voice Dial
iChat

im in england and personally ive sent 2 (yes, thats the actual total) MMS messages
and never received one
i know of no one that uses mms at all really

Well, to each their own! MMS is the ONLY feature that has kept me from buying the first iPhone PERIOD. I send about 50 MMS a month and receive about the same, so about 100 a month total :)

I really hope this is true, none of the updates for the iPhone so far have impressed me much. Couldn't they have shot a video and posted that on their website? No one believes pictures anymore, everyone is a photoshop expert these days.

I WANT A VIDEO TOO :) video video video!!!

Is this for real?! Someone with a new iPhone update who doesn't put it on youtube or at least upload a video for even 10 secs to their site?! Come on! It may be real but that is weak for a blogger! :p
