I think it looks ok but just why have a bump in the first place? If part is going to stick out anyway just make it all flush and the extra thickness of the rest can give everyone a few extra hours of battery life. *facepalm*

Maybe I'm grumpy because I didn't sleep well enough, but no point buying an Apple watch that'll monitor my sleep cuz that'll then go flat during the day as I wouldn't be charging it at night! :p

The greatest products in the world are useless when the battery is dead.
True and true

I hope that in sleeping mode the watch face turns off.

As for the iPhone 11s. I know it’s said frequently, but there’s no freaking way Steve would have approved a massive hump and a screen notch. No way.

There wasn’t a camera bump on any iPhone he approved, and it’s not because it wouldn’t have made packaging easier or he didn’t want a thinner phone. It’s because it’s lazy design, that then spreads into more lazy design. You start with a single lens protrusion and end up with a massive hump with bumps and a notch.

How can the "journalists" tell the cameras are "much improved" under controlled conditions in a single well lit environment, the phone having low resolution displays, and with the Deep Fusion presentation being faked because it won't be available until after launch?

I’m sure you are hoping the camera isn’t great but high chances it will be...you don’t focus a release based around the camera and not be up there as the best camera around

Last years was still holding their own with the comp now never mind this year

Waffle. Nonsense.
I would love to know how you can predict a dead man’s thoughts. Quite a skill.

The lens and camera tech wasn’t there when he was launching iPhones etc.. He was a genius but he wasn’t able to defy the laws of physics.

same drama every year :) people talk **** about the new design but they all going to buy soon lol you don’t like the design ? f...u all the haters create your own then .Stop cry like a little girl we all know you can’t stop your self to get 1

the phone is ugly :p

doesn't change that people will buy it because if you want an iPhone, you have the option of this ugliness, or ... the ugliness.

it's a bit of a chicken egg thing though. you claim that people MUST like the design because theyb buy the phone. but it's entirely possible that people don't like the look o it, but like just about everything else, so they buy it anyways.

it's the same logic you just used here that Apple used after removing the jack.

"See our accessories sell amazingly because people would rather use dongles than headphone jacks!"... when the number one accessory was the headphone jack dongle...

when you remove user agency and choice, jumping to conclusions based on that removal is erroneous.

However, despite me thinking how uggly that bulge on the back is. I'd probably just throw the thing in a case anyways (I hate cases, but I can't seem to hold any phones anymore without dropping. i'm getting old)

Would people be happier if instead of an isolated "bump" it was an elongated "speed bump" across the whole width of the phone? I don't have a problem with the bump because I use a case, but only because of the rounded edges making it slippery in hands/pockets. If they go back to square edges (my preference) I will use the iPhone naked.

I fail to understand the lens setup of the iphone11. A ultra wide lens to zoom out?? Who needs that.

Looks like I’ll be sticking to my ip7+ for another gen, the 2x zoom lens is invaluable often needing to shoot further rather than closer. E.g sports from the stand.

It’s beyond baffling.

Ultrawide is fantastic. I use it far more than the 2x on my Galaxy S10. It is great for indoor shots, for capturing city streets, etc. It allows you to move close to something to get in front of people, fences, or obstructions and still capture the whole subject.

You can digital zoom to better frame something distant, but there is often no substitute for an ultrawide.

Nope I hope they deliver on what they claim so that next year's iPhone might be worth buying. Deep Fusion not even working yet and sycophants fawning over unimpressive features (those videos in the keynote were abysmal) isn't promising so far.

The bump is an acquired taste.. i believe it will grow on people. I did not like it before.. now it has grown on me and i actually love it.
Plus it brings focus to the most important feature upgrade of this years phone. The amazing camera and associated software.. huge leap forward.
I have never been this excited about iPhones camera since 2007.

I think the whole narrative of actual professional video creators using this toy as their go to camera was genuinely rediculous. Ok, let's toss out the RED camera and use an
iPhone instead.
I was thinking something similar watching that during the keynote. But I've worked in professional media before and have actually used a RED camera, shooting a short film. No film maker would ever actually prefer an iPhone over something like a RED camera, but I think the point was to illustrate that, in a pinch, if you don't have a camera like that you can at least achieve decent quality with an iPhone 11 Pro.

What would've been a better example for Apple to use would be Youtubers and influencers, since that kind of demographic Apple targets anyway: the social savvy kids on the YouTubs and the Instagame and all that

Or even just everyday life. Would've been cool to see an example video of a hike or surfing, or pets or something. I remember when Apple first debuted video recording in the iPhone 3GS keynote and for example footage they had a video of kids playing in a backyard. It was perfect because it excellently showed how most people would use it, shooting videos of their kids and whatnot. No one is going to be filming movies with their iPhone I promise you lol

The best looking camera bump yet, IMHO.

People - get used to the camera bump. It’s not going away. If anything Apple will likely double down on the camera bump in the coming years.

Have you seen the iPhone 11 & pro marketing pages?

They’re basically ‘Amazing camera! Did we mention the camera? And oh yeah it’s a smartphone. Whatever’.

OK Question about this camera "bump"

Not only is it a bump now but it is 3 steps.

Not only that, but it looks like the lens is completely exposed. the rim of the lens is lower. is this planned obsolesces? Like are they trying to get everyone to scratch them?

I realize most people are going to have cases, but a design like this... to protect that shape is a have complicated case.
more over, how many cases are only going to align with the lens frame and not the lens?

Why can't the just lose the bump and wedge out the whole phone? or finish what they started here with the bevel and go all the way up?

This just looks ...clumsy.

Has anyone noticed in the tech specs for the iPhone 11, iPhone Pro / iPhone Pro Max, in the video recording section, a feature called Audio Zoom?

Was curious on what this is, as there was nothing mentioned in the Keynote. Just wondering if its like the similar feature on the Note 10.

See this screenshot:
Think “beam-forming” but with a microphone. It records sound in stereo and will subdue sound in the left or right fields that is not in the line of sight of the subject you are filming. Imagine you are filming someone talking and out of frame a dog is barking... it will lessen the noise so you can hear the person speaking more clearly.

I have said this before the 11 was released, and now will repeat it. The camera bump is there, not because Apple needs the space for lenses or sensors, but rather because they want to continue to have people use their iPhones AS their camera. That is, given most purpose-built cameras have lenses that stick out of the body of the camera, so too will the iPhone’s camera. I would venture to guess that the camera bump will continue to grow in either or both height and width as camera technologies change.

Like many other people, I’d love for them to make the whole device thicker and have the camera be flush with the back, but I would bet that we won’t see that until camera tech drastically changes.

I don’t believe that’s an actual picture of the bump. Side shots from reviewers on YouTube show a much less pronounced bump. It looks to be a non issue.

Edit: Yikes! Never mind. Looks like it’s straight from Apples website.

If Apple has any sense at all, it'll be called the 12. Followed by the 13 the year after. It's time to be done with the "S" crap.
Fingers crossed for iPhone Dozen Pro Max next year, followed by iPhone Baker’s Dozen Pro Max with one extra camera tossed in. Ultra Wide XDR. So wide that it can capture a picture of you taking a picture of your cat.

But seriously they should just tack the year on the name like cars do.

Not crazy about the design of the lens but I have to admit the 11 Pro camera capabilities are indeed amazing. Still, that’s not enough for me to upgrade from my 7+. I’ll keep for another year or wait until carriers bring bogo deals. Prices are just too high for the PRO models with very small storage on the base configuration.

Yeah, I’m not digging the three individual camera lens look. The mock up with the single sheet of glass/ lens cover over the bump looks much more appealing, IMO.

I don't know about anyone else but when I look at my phone I am looking at the screen.
If the cameras live up to the hype I may feel a little back for the people having to look at the phone while I take their picture.

When you use your phone you can’t see the bump. When you hold it to your ear you can’t feel the bump. To me it’s like getting worked up over the look of the back of an iMac.
