Yes, agreed. Also, after you receive the device, you can take it to an Apple Store within 14 days, and they can resell it to you under the IUP: I’ve done this with an iPhone that I bought unlocked at full price from Apple (one local store said they’d have to get a new phone from stock, but another store just returned and resold the same device without a hitch)

I've seen that, too, and don't understand why different Apple stores handle things like this differently. Maybe it's just different levels of training and awareness.

For those worried about lack of movement in your order, this happened to me one year:

I saw no movement until the wee hours on Thursday morning (US time) when it shipped from China. I thought that there was no way that it would be out for delivery on Friday, but the plane went straight to Dallas and cleared customs here, and I got the iPhone on launch day: no going through Anchorage or Louisville. I was resigned to getting it Monday, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Tomorrow will be the way we start seeing updates
All

All iPhones are unlocked, only those ordered on At&t next plan. You can slip your old sim in and be good to go...
Is there a way to avoid the carrier upgrade fee? If I paid up front and bought the sim free I could just pop in my sim but I’m on IUP.

Can I just pop in my current sim before I start up the new phone and AT&T will just be waiting for me to activate the new sim? Can you buy a TMobile version on IUP without account info and switch sims?

It pisses me off the carriers get a hand out for doing absolutely nothing.

yes, the awareness was the issue: even the manager at the first store said that there was no way that they could do the resell the way that I wanted (and I’d done it before, but I thought maybe they’d changed their policy). The employee at the second store said, “sure, no problem”, and he explained the entire process. It was quick and easy. I asked the second store to inform the first store :)

View attachment 858396 Mine is scheduled for a pick up at my local Apple Store first thing in the morning on Friday, September 20th. Do the ones going to the stores say “preparing to ship” because the next thing after “processing” isn’t “preparing to ship” but is “check in?”
The two iPhone 11's that I preordered (one using iUp and one doing a trade in) are the same as yours. I guess they technically are not "shipping", but we will have to wait and see. I also got two emails from Citizen's One bank about the two iPhone loans, but nothing has hit my Apple Card yet either.

Every year, I call AT&T and ask them to remove the upgrade fee, and they do. I ask for “Customer Loyalty” at the prompt rather than “Customer Service”: the Loyalty department is their much more helpful retention group.

I tried putting my old sim in before turning on the phone and activating, but I still got the upgrade fee on my bill.

Let’s be patient. I ordered the series 5 Apple Watch just after the event on the 10th and it’s still preparing to ship. And it hasn’t shown up on UPS yet.

I understand that it’s more of a principle thing than a cost thing. But you know they have an upgrade fee you just paid $1,000+ for a phone why are we making a. If deal out of $30/40 that you know would be associated with upgrading.

You are right - it is the principal. I would understand if Verizon/ATT/etc had lots of technical work to do for the "upgrade" but they do nothing aside from a few computer clicks when the new iPhone arrives and is activated (if that). Just a way for them to make a few bucks on unaware people. I make the same call to Verizon.

Exactly. Principle. I have to call out AT&T every few months on some bs charge(AW activation). That activation is the 3% that so many are eager save with cash back from Apple Card

By the way...

The Apple employee that checked me in said, “whaaaat, we’ve got the cases already?!?” :)

Have you checked UPS tracking by reference? My Apple Watch shows Preparing to Ship on my Order Status, but I have tracking info from UPS, and it arrives in Anchorage yesterday.

Thank you. I’d be reluctant to ‘complain’ about something I knew full well at the time of order, but I do have a large account with them with 4 phones, 2 watches, iPads, and directv. So I have no trouble using the Loyalty card.

Verizon always waives the fee if I call to ask, but I've avoided it when I've bought an unlocked phone and swapped sims - though it's been a few years since I last did that and it might not work any more.

My Series 5 showed up in my UPS My Choice on Thursday (ordered it on Tuesday)

I appreciate your post. I just looked at my 4 orders (for my kids) and I did that for one too. I wondered whey the questions they asked were slightly different - I thought it was because that one is a new IUP number and includes a trade in.

I contacted sales support and they said that after sales support can fix or (or cancel the order and start over).

EDIT:
I see the problem. When you trade in, you’d can’t do IUP - it would mess up the math. So when I get the phone, I’ll attempt to change it so I’m doing the trade in separately (getting a Apple credit) but do a regular IUP on that phone.
Yeah this was my first time applying for (what i thought was) the iUP and i didn't know that you can't do a trade in. So when i selected that, it removed the iUP and I just selected what I thought to be the right option. I did call Apple and it can be done in store. They will have to return my phones and then sell them back to me under the iUP. I just really hope that Citizens doesn't give me an issue cuz I'm guessing it will look to them like I'm trying to open two more loans for a total of 4.
