So AT&T now charges $5 a month to be able to do next 24 w/ 12 month upgrade, but when im on the apple site and i select AT&T as my carrier and select a payment option it shows AT&T installments as if its the old way, 24 months w/ 12 month upgrade and it doesn't show an added $5. Perhaps this will change in the morning or we will get lucky if we do it through the apple site?

Is the easiest way to preorder with AT&T through the Apple Store app? My current iPhone is a 7 Plus, and I honestly don't remember how pre ordering went for that. Am I paying for the phone up front and then getting credited back when I send in my old phone (I'm on the Next plan and my phone is paid off)? Is there a "Pre Order iPhones Through AT&T For Dummies" article anywhere?
Same thing happened to me. I’ve been on Next 12 (now called Next UP) since inception, but last year something went wrong and I was on Next 24 or 30 or whatever.
I just paid off both XS Max’s and will sell them once I get my Pro Max’s on the Next UP. Oh well.
I feel so validated reading your stories, I was still working at att at the time and was VERY familiar with the ordering process. Triple checked multiple times that I selected next 24( so I could trade in at 12 months) and it put me on the 30.
no biggy, we had a button to easily switch anyone still in their 14 day window right? Wrong! Button would not work, escalated it to our internal team and got no where. It’s very clear ATT knew ahead of time they were getting rid of their next 24 option(the best deal) and with those giant influx of expensive phones decided to stick us all with next 30 figuring with such volume most of us wouldn’t notice or care to wait on hold to get it fixed. Class action anyone?

2 years ago I upgraded 2 phones to X and wasn’t charged anything. Tax was added to my next bill.
I did a few dry runs of upgrades yesterday with other phones and encountered the same thing. $0 due at purchase with tax and fees to be added to my next bill.
Not sure if that’s a user-by-user issue but I remember others saying that as well 2 years ago but it was definitely the minority.
So my AT&T order just went through. 
I had the count down window open, but in another tab I checked my account and verified my upgradeability... again. For fun, I went through the upgrade process from there. Of course I was elegible, but this time it let me pick the new iPhones! Yesterday, it just said coming soon and offered to sign up for email notifications. So I picked my Pro Max Green, and the entire transaction completed. I have an email with my order number.

If you go into your account and select the phone you want to upgrade it will take you to the countdown screen.
Congrats on those who got to order early, looks like you found a great glitch! I tried but kept getting redirected to the countdown screen.

My orders went through for a Pro Max and Pro (for my wife) this morning just after 6:30 am EST. Last year I was able to order a little early from the AT&T website, but I was surprised it would go through 1 1/2 hours before the official preorder time.

Yes but, from everything I could tell it was only if you added a new line.
I'm nervous. I normally order through Apple's website and pay outright, but I am doing an AT&T payment plan this time and I don't know if I'd have better luck with the Apple website or the AT&T website for launch day delivery.....only 20 minutes to decide!
Everyone will have different experiences to tell, but AT&T's site went live a few minutes early when I ordered the X and it was smooth for me. I remember seeing the Apple app take awhile for me to even refresh that year.
But - for every good story, someone will offer a bad one.
You can always have AT&T's site ready on 1 device and the Apple app ready on another.
I hate when people order early because that makes it kinda unfair for those of us who don’t have some computer glitch that allows that and more likely the phone I want won’t be available for launch delivery. Salty, yep.
Excuse my not using the search function, but do you order a new line, then dump your old line and port the old number to the new line? I'd like to keep my existing number if possible. Thanks in advance...and welcome back everyone!! It's the most wonderful time of the year haha!!
Yes. You can’t keep old number. I have 7 lines on my account and I’m just picking one that doesn’t mind getting a new number.
