Am I the only one who doesn’t understand Mag Safe? They’re calling it wireless, but there’s definitely a wire. What’s the point?
They want to convince people it is alright when they get rid of all the ports for next years iPhone.

"Oh no! My leather drink coasters are showing imprints of glasses that I put on them."

Seriously though, for those in the "I can't see the benefits of MagSafe over regular wireless charging" camp are either missing or ignoring a couple of things:

Regarding "why not just regular Qi charging": Wireless charging is inefficient. Being able to precisely place a device on its charger diminishes that inefficiency. The easiest way to do that is with magnets. If you come up with a better way, then patent it and come out with a product.

Regarding "it's just as difficult as connecting a lightning cable": no, it isn't if you use a dock. Placing something with magnets is much simpler than lining up a phone on a lightning dock, especially one on your bedside table after you've turned out the light.
Eh there are lots of wireless charging stands where you stick it on and it charges. Sorry Mag Safe is nothing special and like others have said, don't really have much benefit (yet, that could change in the future). It is just one more way for apple to nickel and dime users. I mean they don't even provide a charging brick with it. So much for all that "the environment" talk.

Maybe the ring should have been pressed in from the start, instead of allowing it over time. Then there'd be no controversy. I would have then assumed the design was necessary for the magnets, and as a bonus would have a distinct feature that subtly shows I have the latest iPhone aka an imprint of the Apple infinite loop headquarters.

I don’t see the benefits of “wireless” charging, not just MagSafe. I’m using my phone right now, in my hands, and it’s charging through the port. I set it down and it continues charging, I pick it up and it continues charging. This would not be the case if I were using some Qi charger. I’ve never had a problem plugging in my phone in the dark, either.

Also, why are they calling it MagSafe at all?! The “Safe” part was the fact that if you trip on the cord while the Mac is charging, the weak magnet will detach the Mac won’t be pulled off the table. With this puck thing, it seems like the magnets are strong enough that the phone will be pulled off the table, no?

Got my new leather case. They showed it to me when I begged to see it today in store and were willing to sell it to me. Yay!!!

iPhone 12 MagSafe accessories were prototyped in 2018 when Ive was still there. So he definitely had input into this accessory lineup.

Ah, well okay then! Haha... A bit surprising, but fair enough. I do think it looks a bit crap, but it's still good that they're upfront about it.

So I'm wondering, and that's probably because I'm dense ... will the ring on the leather case eventually show if I don't use any MagSafe accessories but charge wirelessly with my round mophie charger.

Got the leather case already, now awaiting the phone which should be here later on today.

No. You won’t have the imprint from normal Qi chargers. It’s only possible with the MagSafe charger.
