iPad Mini has been around since 2012. There was also an iPod Mini. A huge Apple precedent. iPhone Mini makes a lot of sense, especially in the context of large phones being the norm in the market.

I’d prefer to see future iPhones to be named like “iPhone 7.5 inch Pro Max Elite Plus Diamond Pearl”.
Pokemon naming would be fun. You'd have iPhone Blue and iPhone Red, with a different selection of stock apps, and you'd have to buy both Blue & Red to be able to transfer the unique apps between them. :D

I don't like the scheme but it kinda makes sense?

I'm just gutted that it appears I'm going to have to get a bigger phone again if I want the best cameras. The current 11 Pro is still bigger than I'd like but I've got used to it.

Well things have a taken a twist which i hope do not come true. There is a tweet posted by EugW on the ‘A14 benchmarks’ thread on the iphone forum that Apple have developed a midrange SoC called ‘B14’ which may be used in the upcoming 5’4 model!!! This better not happen.

And the average customer knows this?

No, but I don't think that's relevant.

All they see is a bigger iPad for a cheaper price and a smaller one that is more expensive.

No, they also see another iPad (the Air) which is yet more expensive, and two more iPads (Pro) which are even more expensive.

I don't think the branding of iPad/mini/Air/Pro is ideal (I would prefer iPad, 8-inch iPad Air vs. 10-inch iPad Air, 10-inch iPad Pro vs. 13-inch iPad Pro), but I also don't think your scenario is that common.

I could see an A14 that had a couple bad GPU cores being used in less demanding or less expensive models (SE, SE Max?). Analogous to the 7-core GPU A12X that had a bad/disabled core, compared to the 8-core GPU A12Z that Apple used in the 2020 iPad Pros.

It really depends on the yields for TSMC’s new 5nm process node. If they’re getting a lot of dies with 1 or 2 bad GPU cores, they’ll likely find a way to put them to use.

So, "yeah, Apple has problems, but at least they're rich"?
Choice in iPhones isn't a problem. If Jobs were alive, we may all be dealing with 4" phones still. And let's not pretend things were perfect back in his day either.

I fail to understand the issue of, in a thread about the iPhone 12 lineup having four choices, discussing whether it's good to have four choices. Seems kind of like the whole point.

iPhone mini sound stupid. Especially when it’s going to be bigger than the iPhone SE. 🤦🏼‍♀️
It’s going to be smaller than the current SE which is same size as iPhone 8. So I think it’s legitimate to call it mini.

Are there going to be any differences in the 5.4” and 6.1” non-Pro models other than screen size/battery? If not shouldn’t they both just be called iPhone. So then we’d have iPhone and iPhone Pro, both coming in two sizes? iPhone mini sound stupid. Especially when it’s going to be bigger than the iPhone SE. 🤦🏼‍♀️
If you don’t know the answer to your question how do any of us know unless we specifically work at Apple and even if we did we’re not gonna tell you.

Also, The iPhone 12 is not the SE. So calling it a 12 mini just means it’s a mini version of the 12. Has nothing to do with the size of the SE whether or not the SE’s screen was 1 inch or 35,000,000 inches.

If the 5.4” iPhone 12 gets named mini, I can see Apple rebranding the iPad mini as iPad Air mini if it adopts the same redesign, and rebranding the iPad as iPad SE.
