The whole purpose of the confusing names is to force people into a store so they can be up-sold. Simple marketing 101, if you attended an Ivy League school.
Which does work well when:

The nearest Apple store is a few hours drive away;
There are limits on travel (some areas people are required not to leave due to Covid-19);
A lot of sales will come from mobile carriers - not Apple stores;
The Apple stores are already full of people deciding what colour watch/strap, iPad, etc., to buy.

I read somewhere that iPad mini's are popular with retail and restaurants. Some of that pricing might be because they know businesses will pay it.
The iPad mini has the better screen (laminated, anti-reflective, True Tone, P3 color), higher PPI (same number of pixels as the iPad), better front camera (7 MP instead of 1.2, 1080p recording instead of 720), Bluetooth 5, and double the memory (64/256 GB instead of 32/128). That’s why it’s higher priced.

So the iPhone 12 Mini sounds like it could be the new SE? Or rather it will replace the SE and perhaps it will lose the home button, the chin & forehead and have touch ID built into the power switch?
Therefore it could be a matching item for the new iPad Air.

Make it stop... these names are getting legit stupid. Let Samsung have the horrible names to themselves.

Can't they just copy the iPad/mac line?

iPhone 5.4" 2020
iPhone 6.1" 2020
iPhone Pro 6.1" 2020
iPhone Pro 6.7" 2020

Not really any less confusing but less word-vomit-y, maybe?

Did you ever see Pulp Fiction?

Listen to the dialogue about burgers?

And why you get a Royale with Cheese in Paris rather than a quarter pounder?

They got the metric system there!

Perhaps we should be talking about 119 mm, 137 mm, 155 mm and 170 mm screens?

I'm quite sure the marketing names were decided some time ago for what we are calling the iPhone 12. Should we skip to the 2021 iPhones? Surely they can't call them iPhone 13 and variations?

if they were to copy the iPad lineup, it would look more like this:
The iPhone SE would just become the iPhone.
The iPhone mini would be 5.4 inches.
The 6.1 inch iPhone 12 would be called the iPhone air.
Then the iPhone Pro in two sizes.
So it would look like this:
iPhone: $399
iPhone Mini: $649
iPhone Air: $749
iPhone Pro: $999/1099

There is nothing cool about having a product described by name as whatever and then “Pro Max”. One word should be used for the iPhone type. iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Max.

or wait. iPhone 12 “PROMAX”!!!!

People that complain about the names of iPhones really make me laugh. If you honestly think that Steve Jobs would have a better name, keep in mind that he called the second generation iPhone the iPhone 3G, and the third generation the 3G S. The fifth iPhone was called the 4S, and the iPhone 5 was actually the sixth iPhone.

I have 11 Pro and it is the largest possible screen size I can tolerate. Just cannot get bigger for me. I purchased Max and returned it. Does this mean that 12 Pro will be larger than 11 pro? If so, it will be a disaster for me....

Are we in an era where tech companies are the most least creative when it comes to naming things or just copying other companies? You got various "plus's" for streaming services, "Max" for phones and devices, and I just wish there was some more creativity. No one is standing out from each other and everything is becoming so fragmented.

Still can’t get over “Pro Max”.

Why isn’t it just:

12
12 +
12 Pro
12 Pro +

They been using the “Max” for a few years now. And the mini goes back to the Mac mini & iPad mini naming. It’s not like it’s a brand new naming scheme.

Unless Apple decides to call it iphone 12 Pro Max Ultra 😂

Don't forget the iPod Mini... :)

You can bitch about it any way you want... Just get over it and stop drinking the kool-aid that it needs to be unlike Samsung or others at all costs.

Confusing and stupid naming strategy
"12" is the generation of iPhones.
"Pro" is better (cameras, performance, maybe wireless).
"Max" is bigger.

Could it be any more intuitive and easier to grasp?
Even works in many languages and cultures.

why they don't just call it iPhone and differentiate by screen size? I hate these naming.

I wonder when they will stop putting that number in the name. iPhone 29? iPhone 32?

Because that would be stupid. Let’s see what the lineup would look like if there were absolutely no differentiating model names.
iPhone (4.7 inch but with home button and top border 2020 addition)
iPhone (5.4 inch 2020 addition)
iPhone (6.1 inch but with one less camera 2020 addition)
iPhone (6.1 inch with one extra camera and a couple other things 2020 edition)
iPhone (6.7 inch 2020 addition)

Why does the world need FOUR new iPhones ffs! iPhone Mini, pro and pro max surely are more than enough.

Yeah. I’d prefer to see future iPhones to be named like “iPhone 7.5 inch Pro Max Elite Plus Diamond Pearl”.

Available for only bourgeoisie.
