Apple should drop the numerical designation next year and simplify the lineup naming to:

iPhone 12 Pro > iPhone Pro
iPhone 12 Pro Max > iPhone Pro Max
iPhone 12 > iPhone Air
iPhone 12 Mini > iPhone Air Mini
iPhone SE > iPhone

iPad already follows this naming scheme and is much tidier:
iPad (entry level)
iPad Air (mid range)
iPad Pro (pro range)

To call a 7 ounce iPhone, “Air”, when the iPhone OG SE was 4 ounces is an insult to human intelligence. Other that that you make good points.

An “iPhone Air” would be an iPhone with a width of 58.6 mm

I could absolutely see the Mini getting delayed, but I find it hard to believe that the Pro and Pro Max models would not launch at the same time.

5.4 is the "mini" ?! iPhone7 has 4.7 screen and that is the biggest I am willing to go, my hands already have a problem reach all the screen with one hand.

Make an 8 inch phablet for those who want a mini tablet that can make phone calls, but the rest of us we still want a smart "phone"

The iPhone 12 5.4 is smaller than the 4.7 device because obviously there is more or less in this case, to a phone than the screen. Home button and the redic ancient bezel for one thing

brand dilution. Does the company want to focus on making insanely great products or making a lot of things to make a lot of money growing like a cancer in a way they have trouble controlling? What’s their GOAL anymore? Growth?

Unable to explain why so many products were necessary, Jobs asked his team of top managers, "Which ones do I tell my friends to buy?" When he didn't get a simple answer, Jobs got to work reducing the number of Apple products by 70 percent.

I think that I'll probably wait on the iPhone Mini Max Pro Air SE model before I buy :).

OMG... are you telling me that Apple will release 4 new iPhones this year? Four?

I am horrified. I don't know how they will ever survive. :p

That's easy, same as it has always been...Develop and produce great products people want to buy, many being repeat customers, who are willing to open their wallets and pay premium prices, year after year after year. On the average, Apple manufactures, ships, and sells roughly 600,000 iPhones per day, every day of the year.

With likewise adjustments, pre-orders for the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models could begin on Friday, October 16, one week after Apple's "Hi, Speed" event, and the first iPhone 12 shipments and an official launch could happen on Friday, October 23.

Either I'm mis-reading this or something's wrong - Friday 16th is only 3 days after the Event, not one week.

What people sometimes seem to forget is that you can’t really compare the advertised screen sizes of two phones with different aspect ratios. Why? Because screen size is measured diagonally and not in actual square inches (or even better, cm2).

Since the modern iPhones (except for the SE2) all have taller displays than the older models, the screens will seem a lot bigger on paper than the old ones because of this.

Timeline makes little sense to me if accurate.

Would be the latest they ever released and iPhone. Also, basically leaves a month of holiday sales and 5 weeks before year end.

Yeah they seem cut down more and more with each rumour this year but the central items like OLED, A14 and camera night mode are still there for me and I've waited this long for a compact iPhone in the X design.

Still voting for the Mini with my wallet, whenever it arrives, along with the 600,000 other iPhone customers on that day. This is far from gloomy news, unlike the news from everywhere else.

Well... this has been a strange year... hasn't it.

Don't you think Apple wanted to release new iPhones a month ago?

But they didn't. So we'll have to wait a little longer.

Fun fact... people buy iPhones ALL YEAR... not just on launch day. But there are some comments here suggesting that people won't buy iPhones simply because they are coming on a different date...

Finally decided on voting with my wallet for the 12 mini in the hopes of a 13 pro mini next year that I can spend $1099 on. Figure it won’t be so bad if I keep my 12 mini in good condition and then sell it on eBay when the time comes.

I don't understand what the point is of announcing products and then not making them available for pre-order. Separately: these delays are annoying. My work has a BYOD policy where I can get reimbursed for a new phone I purchased before November. Delaying the preorder makes it such that I cant get reimbursed in this fiscal year (and effectively lose out on a year of this benefit).
