People wanted the mini until they realized a smaller phone means a smaller battery.
Nah, only the few netizens are loud on wanting a small phone. In reality, those wanting a small phone are very niche. Then again it fits Apple's intention. They satisfied this niche because they can afford to, while making the rest spending more money for the more expensive iPhone 12... That Tim Cook surely is smart in generating revenue.

Apple sabotaged the Mini by also making it less feature rich. I would have gladly bought a Mini sized phone that 25% thicker, had the Pro’s camera module, and a bigger battery. But because they are so focused on “it has to be insanely thin” they completely missed the boat with the phone.
How is it less feature rich when it has the same exact features as the larger iPhone 12?

The mini is not and was not meant to be a budget phone. That’s what SE is for. In fact it’s specs are identical to the standard 12 besides size. It has (costly) features the previous Gen doesn’t have like oled screens at the highest ppi Apple’s put in a product.

It’s targeted at people (like me) who want a higher end iPhone at a smaller size. Low demand just means small phones aren’t popular.

I rarely get mine to drop below 50% despite heavy use. (Web, video, music, etc) I expect anyone struggling to get through the day with it must do heavy gaming. (I don’t)
Finally, a mini user who understand the niche vs general demand. 👍🏼 Most other mini fans think that their preference is the majority.

I’ve heard the mini’s battery struggles to get through a whole day - when brand new. After a year or two usage : it will be useless. I wish Apple had tried this after battery technology had ramped up quite a bit more.
I haven't heard that. Coming from the SE, I've been very pleased with the battery life of my 12 Mini. I usually end the day at about 70-80% charge. That's with bluetooth, streaming to my car stereo, tik tok and other media throughout the day.

Many people want a smart phone without the bells and whistles at a relatively affordable price. I can afford whatever phone I want whenever I want, but even still, I would hardly care if I had an iPhone without any cameras at all.

The price point of the 12 mini is a joke. Drop the mini, rename the SE line as the mini line

The demo unit is available even with resellers in my country. There’s no way people wanting to it are not able to, unless you’re in a complete lockdown situation.

The iPhone mini served its purpose, to increase the price of the iPhone 12 compared to the iPhone 11 without too much backlash.
Well, lots of places have had lockdowns of various sorts.

And a lot of people are being cautious about going to busy public places generally, even if shops are open.

For example, I visited Apple stores here in London over the summer when things were open and everything was way quieter than usual. Everything was way less busy.

Likely, we won’t ever see data from Apple, but it seems probable that store visits will be down significantly around the world. Fewer visits means fewer people seeing the new size in person.

Fewer social interactions means fewer people seeing their friends new phone.

All in all, this was probably the most difficult year to launch a new phone size.

Utter nonsense. I usually end the day with over 50% left. Best battery life I’ve ever had in an iPhone.

With the same usage pattern, you could have ended the day with over 75% on a 12 Pro Max. Meaning you can go two full days with no charge, meaning half the battery cycle over years, meaning Pro Max battery could last twice as long.

Counting battery health and its replacement cost over time (out of warranty), I'd rather play it safe and go with the biggest iPhone.

How is it overpriced? It has the same exact features as a more expensive iPhone 12.
I think you and Apple make the mistake of thinking that those looking to buy the SE/mini or whatever you want to call it are feature-sensitive when in fact they are price-sensitive.

I am not sure what market segment the iPhone mini is serving. I don't think the 12.5% discount on the 12 mini compared to the 12 is overly appealing for those looking to not buy a high-end phone.

Rumors indeed. And of course Apple rumors get eyeballs and attention for Nikkei Asia. Please take with a large bag of salt. They do not know if this is planned, unplanned, based on sell though or an expected turn of assembly lines to new devices. So they make crap up.

My wife got one the other day and it’s great. Really a wonderful thing. If I hadn’t needed the Lidar on the Pro for work, I’d probably have gone for it.

I suspect if more people had been able to see them in person more people would have had confidence to try the new size. Hopefully apple stick with it for another year.
„Most people“ will say: yeah it’s nice but I can get an XR for far less and it has a bigger screen and the cameras are good enough(!) too.
12 mini is mostly a nerd phone. I guess apple will read less in the MR forums from now on ;)

That’s what I meant. They will buy an XR, no one wants a mini.

I own the 12 mini and I'm not really in love with it as much as I thought I would be.

It is way too tall and narrow.
Too tall that I had hard time reaching out to the top and bottom with thumb.
Too narrow that typo occurs too often with keyboard on screen

A 5.4 inch fat iPhone with 3:2 screen ratio (like the original iPhone 4 ratio) should be the way to go.
At least 16:9 would be way better than current nonsense display ratio

No, it’s because people most want large screens. The name has nothing to do with it. Pro Max is a great name?

There is actually a very large psychology to the names of products. Mini implies lesser than other. It’s a “mini” version of something else - it makes it sound cheap. They could have gone with iPhone Compact or any other name but mini was a bad choice.

I don’t believe it was primarily the name, although that was bad. But the price...$100 more and you have a larger screen & more features. If it were priced $250 lower than the iPhone 12, they’d have sold quite a bit more imo.

There is plenty of demand for average sized devices. That is literally why Apple tried it with the iPhone 12 Mini - sales of the 2 versions of the iPhone SE have been stronger than predicted.

They can sell a ton of em with correct price to feature ratio.

Why? I thought you guys want a mini flagship. :D But seems like people just want a cheap iPhone, which what the 11 and SE are for.
The 12 mini isn’t a flagship device. That’s on Apple. They should have withheld features if they couldn’t put it in a pro.

You heard wrong.

Absolutely not. People want all the features, and a large screen was a burden they accepted to get them.

Having 75% at the end is a waste. It’s worse than a waste it’s unnecessary weight to lug about. I would hate to haul that ton of a pro.

My wife is definitely not a tech nerd. She needed a new phone and didn’t want a big one. An XR wasn’t even considered. Neither was an 11 when she realised how big it was.

Her choice was between the mini, the 12 and the SE.

The mini should have been the same price, not less, for the reason you mentioned. People saw it was cheaper and thought it was an inferior device. The non mini should have been designed to match the mini, and the price should have been the same.

1 no, the price is not the problem.
2 perhaps the people who complain about large phones don't buy it BECAUSE ITS STILL LARGER THAN AN IPHONE X
3 if you come and tell me its smaller than the 8, you clearly are pretending that screen size is not the problem,
4 put Touch ID back, not every customer is a dimwit who accepts every gimmick you want to force upon them
so yea, make a maxed iPhone 8 and I will buy it, the price is not the problem.

I have grown to like my iPhone 12 mini more day by day. Wouldn't change it for anything. Even more importantly, I wouldn't imagine buying anything larger than that for my kid, to whom I now bought 2020 SE. But once that model will get phased out, the mini will become an excellent "new SE" for Apple. Currently, its biggest problem is the price, which doesn't match the needs of the majority of the potentially interested user groups (meaning those who need as practical phone as possible, and kids).

You can only do so for the first few months. After that it's a decline down the abyss. Even a 12 Pro Max battery degrades and it sucks when it does. But with bigger battery, it's tolerable.

Been there with the iPhone 5s.. wasn't fun when I have to charge 3 or 4 times a day near its end of use. I only bought the very biggest iPhone ever since.

You heard lies, or nonsense from people who use their phone more than is healthy. After a day of intermittent use, because I have a job that doesn't require me to use my personal phone, I have 60% battery left as I head home. You definitely get less battery with iPhone 12 mini, but there's a deeper question in whether or not the battery lasts as long as it "should".
