Yes, did not notice a new option getting visual at the bottom. It works much better than my suggestion. But touch is still acting a bit weird, but much better now.

Everyone should try this, and be happy until an official fix.

Edit: well it’s not good. The 0.10 seconds makes it almost impossible to write on the keyboard. So it’s up to Apple now, to fix it quickly.

Did you not turn off the 0.1 seconds hold duration?

Edit:
aahh sorry you referred to that second option with the delay. Yes that makes typing a bit weird. Typing by swiping works good for me though.

Been experiencing this issue since Friday, when I received my new iPhone Mini. Frustrating not being able to unlock my phone while wearing a mask. I hope Apple soon addresses this issue publicly as we’re already at 17 pages of postings on this thread alone.

I believe the reason why this is happening is that the iPhone 12 is trying to prevent unlocking accidentally when it's in your pocket. It needs your skin to touch the sides as a ground, this is the reason why the foil trick works and/or touching the charge port.

Having a case installed eliminates the ground contact and the iPhone thinks it's getting ghost touches while it's in your pocket.

yes that might be the reason. There is another interesting fact: Apple seems to have fixed some Lock Screen issues already with 14.2 but they just might have forgotten to adjust it to the mini. check the third topic in the ‘fixes‘ section: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211808#142

Yeah some people have reported that as well, though a few have said it didn’t change for them.

I've done the same, and sent to their feedback link, as well as let MacRumors "tip" email know about it. A user in the Apple support forum said he/she noticed it before leaving the store and they were able to test multiple cases without success, and other users getting the Mini began noticing the same.

The problem is it's subtle at first and you might not notice it until you've used it for a few hours and thought, "ok this keeps happening, what's up with this?". Or, you might not start with a case right out of the gate... I fully expect this thread to grow quite a bit over the next couple of days.
Precisely

I have this issue only when I use MagSafe case . No case it seems fine with the case I need to use tip of my thumb/finger for it to register

Wow! So glad I found this, I thought I was going crazy. Answering phone calls from lock has been a PITA. It seems to work best when using tip of finger with more pressure than usual. Hoping for a fix soon.

I always use a matte screen protector to get rid of glare, finger prints and provide a satin feel when swiping. Also, I got the white Mini so I get to enjoy the naked look for a while :). If the wait for a fix is too long, I might just dremel a section on the edge of one of my cheap cases where my index finger rests when performing an unlock.
Haha that is actually a vg idea

So everyone that’s having issues, does your screen protector cover the whole screen even the notch? Because my screen protector doesn’t and I’m not having this issue.

Placing a small piece of tin foil on the bottom side of the case where one of your fingers usually rest works every time, versus the assistive touch gesture toggle, which doesn’t work every time and affects typing. Use a small enough strip of foil where your pinky is, and you won’t even see the foil while holding the case.

I had the same issue from out of the box, no case, no screen protector of any kind. It took several minutes just to get the swipe up gesture to be acknowledged so I could escape the language selection screen. It didn't get much better than that after 14.2 was installed and set up was completed. I did put a case on it after that, no screen protector though. I don't tend to use them tbh. Can't say the case made the problem worse, it was a complete pain anyway
I'll point out that I'm a voice over user and that was enabled from set up, voice over appears to exacerbate the problem a bit, I discovered that by turning it off and trying to unlock my phone, which was easier then. Unfortunately I need voice over to use the device and its really not practical in most situations to have to disable it, and honestly I don't think I should have to simply for it not to take multiple attempts to get the phone to respond to some gestures. Especially as it doesn't fix the problem completely either.
So I'm actually returning the phone. I'll muddle on with the 8 I was upgrading from. I might go for the SE which will be some improvement at least and which retains touch ID which I prefer over face ID anyway especially in the current climate of having to ware masks a lot.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that Apple will bring out another mini to SE sized phone in future that still has touch ID and decent cameras like the 12 series.
Hope they find a fix for the issue soon.

Having similar issues too. Returning mine. Need a better experience for $656. Will order another when the bugs are sorted.

I really do think that this does need to be acknowledged as further issues are starting to become apparent:

  • Some purchases have done so via an upgrade programme so are in a difficult situation with regards to exchanges and returns having surrendered their previous handset
  • Users who rely upon accessibility features such as voiceover are struggling to use the device as a result of the issue which is an even greater concern
  • Due to the ongoing pandemic, having to return or exchange the device is already proving to be challenging due to physical store closures or lack of stock availability
The acknowledgement that this can be resolved via software I think would alleviate a great many/growing number of anxieties related to this. If it is hardware then at least arrangements can be put in place for those subject to high level lockdown restrictions etc.

I have a few friends returning their minis and just getting the 2020 SE instead till next year. Might not be a bad idea honestly.

Ok so everyone please LISTEN UP!!⭐️

spent about 4-5 hours in contact with Apple. Helpline > helpline > helpline > helpline senior advisor > engineer

Engineer says this is NOT LOGGED as an issue by Apple. Said that they don’t take info from Apple discussions site or macrumours or any online forums into account.

have advised I return my phone for replacement.

So, people please get onto Apple support and log your issue!

So essentially everyone report to Apple with the official feedback form: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Yes I have no issues with both genuine MagSafe leather case, peel ultra thin case and this screen protector.
I took off the ESR full screen and tried the Spigen notch. Didn’t make a difference in Apple case of Spigen Ultra Hybrid. I then applied iCarez full screen privacy and put the Apple Poppy back on with the aluminum on the bottom right corner of the case, and swiping etc., works again as it should.

Reported using the above link.

I’d be interested to know how people get on with their replacement phones they’ve been advised to get. I can’t see that helping.

Where, if anywhere, do Apple publicly acknowledge issues like this? Do they have a known issues page?

Ok so now am on phone to a different engineer. He says this is logged as an issue. But very small number of cases. So may be an issue with a certain batch rather than widespread.

So get onto apple, people!
