Except the fact that touching a metal part of the phone solves the problem... obviously, there is a grounding issue
Maybe! My husband doesn't believe so though. He thinks they tweaked their anti-butt-dial formula for the mini and made it a bit too sensitive. It's pretty complex and will likely factor in, among many other things, size of the touch area and capacity. Touching the metal part of the phone raises the capacity of your hand.
*fingers crossed*

My wife’s mini works perfectly for her but when I try to swipe up it won’t. When I manage to get the code Lock Screen, it will not allow me to type in a password. So I’m guessing it’s also depending on thumb size or we have different conductive properties in our bodies 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣...really strange problem apple has on their hands.
A temporary work around that bypasses Lock Screen swipe

Settings > Accessibility > Back Tap > toggle on > set to home

From Lock Screen double tap the back of your case, and it will take you directly to Home Screen with no swiping involved.

If you are prompted with the passcode screen, simply double tap the back of your case and your passcode will automatically be inputted and send you to Home Screen.

With this work around, you shouldn’t need to use tin foil on the side of the case or touch the camera circles.

Apple’s lack of communication is quite annoying btw
Sorry yes, it's frustrating but the device only launched on the 13th, 3 days later I don't expect Apple to announce a possible major flaw with their latest device, I'm sure they are aware of it now and will respond in due course when they have collated enough evidence from users and there testing.

I have some issues like others but I'm happy to wait for a short while to see how the story develops.

The last time I had issues with a new iPhone it was the iPhone 5, Apple swapped out my device 3 times until I was happy.
So for now I am keeping the faith.🤞

I have a feeling there are many users who have the issue but they don't realize it...swipe up to unlock mostly works consistently but they haven't tried the flashlight yet or don't have to unlock using the codes too often. They may see that the phone isn't as responsive but not enough to bother them, or maybe they don't use their thumbs.

I thought I didn’t have the issue but tired answering a call today and couldn’t swipe.
I find it worse if I’m outside and my hands are cold.
Belkin Screen Protector and Silicone case.

Who foot‘s the bill for this screen protector and possibly the case as well when I have to send this phone back. Thats £35 quid thanks Apple. And £19 on your stupid charger.

Why can’t people use tempered glass without case in the interim? Till a solution is found. Or case without tempered glass, if somebody prefers that instead.

Won‘t that be a good enough temporary fix?

Yeah, I think finding a temporary solution that works for you is the best thing at the moment. Considering how reproducible and widespread, I'm starting to think all 12 minis are affected (the variable being the size/shape of people's thumbs) so I'm not racing to the Apple Store for a swap.

For me, I'm keeping everything as-is (case + screen protector), and I'm hoping that there will be a software bug fix. Still, for many functions I have found the right amount of pressure for it to mostly work properly and/or touching a metal part and that's been good enough for me.

If I was working from home, I'd 100% go caseless for the time being or lose the screen protector as you suggested.

Has anybody else wasted a considerable amount of time phoning up and talking with Apple this weekend Not even been able to choose which music you want to listen to in the queue because your touchpad doesn’t work?

If Apple would just said what you’ve just wrote, it would be enough for me atm.

Re: Apple support phone call: I explained about the case and screen protector on / off, as well as the grounding aspect using tin foil on case or touching back of camera area. I also explained about reset all settings and recover mode not working. I also had the lady put in the notes that all mini’s owners appear to be affected and she made a note about MacRumors forum. She is passing on the information to higher ups. I got a case number and they may call or email me in regards to a follow-up.

edited to add: The rep didn’t want me returning the phone right away. She hinted in case (no pun intended) Apple releases a fix. I didn’t ask if others had reported and she didn’t offer any extra information on reports or status thereof.

Everybody should call as well as send in feedback thru their site. If enough people contact them they will acknowledge this issue faster. As far as I can tell this problem does not only affect a small number of units, but every single one, even if some small fingered individuals or people not using both case and screen protector don't notice it.

Please keep us posted if/when they contact you and what the response is. Seems like everybody calling in is getting told to turn their devices in for a replacement which I'm confident will not solve the problem.

Personally I would pass on a replacement. There are so many threads, videos, forums, tweets, etc, about this topic that this is not a single batch of iPhone Minis that are defective. People are reporting these issues from all around the world. My advice is not to waste time and resources in getting a replacement. I have the feeling all iPhone Minis are suffering from these problems.

I see two options:
- Hold the phone in perfect shape to see if Apple delivers a fix before your free-return policy expires.
- Don’t risk getting the phone damaged and losing part of the refund. Go straight ahead for a reimbursement and get another model.

Also check your full-refund period. It will likely last until the 8th January if you bought it directly from Apple.

I will. She didn’t even offer to replace the phone etc. More than likely, she saw there had been other reports when she put me on hold for a while.

I am definitely not going to waste my time with a replacement. I am going to ride this train a good while longer and see what Apple says and does, before making a definitive decision.

Why don't you all just buy the apple clear case then setup a return on Jan 8 and you will have another 2 weeks to get it back to them, while waiting for them to do something.

I did the online report several days ago and figured it would be best to talk with a rep at length. I let her know every mini owner I have seen is affected.

The Pitaka case also seems to improve the issue. Basically any case with an opening on the bottom if that's where you rest your pinky.

I don't think that's a guaranteed fix? Unless I'm missing something. If so, that's not a bad idea. But some people only have 14 days to decide on this issue as well.

I can assure you that my fingers are not small, I do have both a case and a screen protector, and I am not having issues. So please don’t assume that I (all) have the problem.
