I don't think that's a guaranteed fix? Unless I'm missing something. If so, that's not a bad idea. But some people only have 14 days to decide on this issue as well.
Well if it goes over the 14 days and Apple don't do anything, would surely have to be a re call or allow people to swap to a 12, you can't put up with this.

I can assure you that my fingers are not small, I do have both a case and a screen protector, and I am not having issues. So please don’t assume that I (all) have the problem.

From your previous comment:

Using a Spigen case and screen protector here. The only thing I can't do is lay the mini on a table and turn on the flashlight and/or camera. Everything else, touch wise, works without picking the phone up, Unlock, answering calls, reacting to notifications etc. As far as the flashlight and camera are concerned, I'm glad they don't come on unless the phone is in my hand. Would not be of use unless I was holding the phone anyway.

This is the issue. If it's on a table you're not using your thumb to do any of that either - at least not likely. And it's been discussed in depth that using one of your fingers tends to cause it to work mostly fine, or at least hard to notice.

Between this and the Pro's wireless charging issues, the 12 is one of the poorest quality control releases Apple has done.

All my fingers and two thumbs work on everything except on the flashlight and camera. I don’t consider either of those two items an issue when I’m not holding the phone. I have no issues on the Lock Screen or any other screen, reacting to calls, mail, notifications, scrolling, etc, holding or not holding the phone

So even if you put a mask on and try to unlock it one-handed with your thumb, zero delays or hiccups at all?

If so then it sounds like you've got one that barely has it (the flash light / camera) and that's great. Personally I've been able to recreate the issue at varying levels on about 15 different devices now between myself, a handful of people I know that got it, and a handful of different retailers where I was there anyway and decided to test. Different sources, different locations. So unless our region has a bad batch, combine that with what we're seeing reported online, and it seems pretty widespread.

Jumping into this thread as I experienced this issue for the first time today with my mini. I just put on my ESR screen protector after using my apple leather case all weekend without a hitch. Now with the screen protector in I’m having the touch screen issues.

It’s the same as everyone else has described. If I touch the metal camera ring I can unlock the phone. If I put it down on a table it works. If I take off the case it works.

Patiently waiting for a viable solution because I need to protect the front and back of my phone.

UPDATE: my apple silicon case seems to be working fine. Will continue to test.

Update 2: silicon case also giving me issues.

I am looking to buy an iPhone 12 Mini, should I wait for this issue to be fixed?

I have no regrets buying the phone. At this point, I think it is a software problem that can be fixed. I think Apple will come up with a fix before my return period ends.

If you don’t mind using the back tap work around, touching the back camera area, or using a piece of tin foil on the side of the case, go ahead and buy. If you are in the U.S. your return date is 1.8.21. If Apple does sway its hardware, you haven’t lost anything, as you will still be able to get a refund on or before 1.8.21.

Thank you. I am going to try and contact Apple tomorrow to see if they will say its a software problem.

Mask, no mask, all 8 fingers and two thumbs. Glasses, no glasses. Sunlight or dark. Except for the flashlight and camera when I’m not holding and quite frankly I like that fact. No delays, stuttering, hesitations or anything else that is unusual. Been an iPhone user since the 1st one and many years more than one. Except as stated, I have no issues with my iPhone 12 Mini.

I'm not sure if you've covered every scenario... can you try this: Ok just kidding. That's great then. 👍

Can’t wait Apple fix to finally read you having issue while all other mini owners dancing in the rain 😂😉

I think it all comes down to the fact that I use the tip of my thumb to complete all gestures on the Home Screen. I’ve had almost no issues and then I started pressing my whole thumb on the screen and suddenly the screen wouldn’t respond to anything correctly. But if that’s the case, couldn’t a lot of users just get used to using the tip of their thumb instead and problem solved?

Has anyone tried from Lock Screen take picture -> review picture -> have issue with the touch registration there? I have trouble zooming in when I go to my album from camera Lock Screen but don’t have issues when I’m in the photos after lock screen

Yes. Which IMO is further proof that the issue has something to do with the state of the software while the phone is still locked.

The Apple clear case and some others have a cutout on the bottom for the ports. If your pinky rests on the metal of the case where the cutout is then you don't have an issue anymore.

Could you open up the camera app from the lock screen, take a picture and the check if pinch zooming works well on the photo you took?(don't unlock the iPhone, just click on the photo in the lower left hand)

But the touching the camera “trick” fixes the zooming. Would that still be a software issue? Apologize if this is discussed already, only read the first couple and last couple of pages of the forum.

on the fence to just return the phone.

I just got a call from Tim Cook’s office (Executive Relations). I had sent him an email about this problem on Friday afternoon. The lady that called had also read the notes from the call I had with the advisor today. It looks like they want me to work with the technical and engineering department on this matter to hopefully get it resolved. They scheduled a call back tomorrow at 4pm.

Thanks for taking the time to try and resolve this issue with Apple.
