I’m on my second unit and I’ll be returning it...it’s totally annoying to use.

The fact Apple hasn’t officially called out the issue and said a fix is coming is ridiculous at this point. I have zero trust that they’ll do the right thing with any haste without a giant spike in product returns that costs them bottom line dollars. These aren’t the Steve Jobs days of building a brand based on excellent products for the consumer, these days it’s only what is best for increasing shareholder value
The Steve Jobs days of handing out some BS plastic bumper because people were holding it wrong? These things happen with new products regardless of company or which magical, god-like CEO is running it. I understand some people are frustrated, others (like myself) can gently press the screen and it works in the meantime, though in a frustrating manner. Perhaps I’m lucky with my case choice and/or screen protector but regardless the expectation that Apple is going to “call out the issue” less than a week from release and without fully understanding the problem is ridiculous. If you can’t deal with the wait for a fix (or maybe a nice 2020 version of the bumper case) just return it without the theatrics of wishing for the good old Jobs days.

Frustration here is understandable, but if you don't think Steve Jobs was about shareholder value, you're fooling yourself.

I believe Apple is going to make sure the problem is solved before issuing an update that specifically addresses and fixes the problem. I have faith that we will see a working update before the return window closes.

I’ve found that if I hold the phone at the bottom with my left hand slightly squeeze (apply pressure), swipe up with my finger on the right hand, it works every time. It’s when I try to use it with one hand that it doesn’t open.
Also, I’m using a case and glass screen protector.

I am having the same issue with touch sensitivity on the lockscreen. I've chatted with apple support through the app and they have confirmed its a known issue and it has been escalated to the engineering team. It would still be beneficial for everyone who has the chance to go on the apple support app and tell them about your issue so it can be documented and expedited.

Done! I shared the foil case solution with them. When Tim releases the iFoil...you'll know where it all started.

Just goes to show you don’t really want to be a early adopter with Apple products, it’s never worried me but some swear by it.

Yeah, this was the first year I've upgraded to a phone upon release. I won't be in a rush to do it again. I think I got the 8 maybe 3/4 months after it came out and would've waited longer if the original SE I was using wasn't having worsening touch screen issues, similar to what's happening with the mini, only it was becoming more generalized as time went on. I'd had that phone for a good while though and it was definitely well used. It's sat in a drawer as the last resort emergency phone now.

This is a kind of issue that is easy to test before launching a product, but things happen. It’s much easier for Apple heads to verify and reproduce the issue with all the worldwide details we have and just say : « ok there is a problem, we’re studying to fix it the sooner as we can » Silence is just.....

It's only been 5 days. Apple never rushes to say there is a problem with any of their products. How long did it take for them to say anything about the butterfly keyboard? It'll happen in due time.

right now i realized another weird thing, can you guys see if you can replicated it?

i was holding the phone and scrolling on a website with my thumb (normally i would say, since the phone was unlocked) then i left the phone on the table and tried to scroll again with my thumb with no luck (index worked fine), when i picked up the phone again and tried to scroll with my thumb is was OK... WTH???

both SP & Case where on

Not everyone buys direct from Apple you know

Strangely enough I too am experiencing generalised touch issues with the original SE.
Some apps are worse than others, which makes me think whether there has been changes in the way iOS and Apps manage touch, skewed towards larger screens. This would make sense as, up to now, the only small screen iPhone available was the original SE.
Maybe this will change now.

Yep. Just tried it. Same problem here. Tip of the thumb works, larger surface area doesn’t.
Could really be the case that the phone is too sensitive in terms of preventing unintended inputs or something like that.

So this means that the scrolling problem is not happening only at the lock screen... i hope that this is the case as it may be easily solvable via an upadte

I think apple already know about this before launch but the rush of this year to get sales with 2 months of delay was more important.

"Sell them and work on the fix"

This. This isn’t something that could have been missed.

Just a thought my 12 mini is fine with a thin non glass screen cover. Actually while putting on the new glass one I accidentally managed to apply the thin clear plastic cover for the glass protector - but as it adhered so well I just left in in place and kept the glass one in package to use again when the thin one wears
Mistake by me but no issues with this. I also have clear case on phone as well

I can confirm that this happens to me too. No case or screen protector.

I have been reading the comments, Reddit, Apple Discussion.
I have let Korean Tech Youtubers know about this issue and Youtubers who have tried it out "all" had this issue.

To briefly summarise for the people who do not want to read all the previous comments, this issue only happens:
1. when screen protector "AND" phone case are on.
- Korean Youtubers have found out that the screen protectors with less than 0.15mm thickness will 'NOT' cause this issue.
- Cases that have open sides / bottom will 'NOT' cause this issue (due to skin touching the aluminium part of the phone)

2. When bigger part of your finger touches the screen (Fat fingers). (it's not the fact that you are using a thumb or an index finger or if you are holding it with one hand two hands)
- A lot of girls (women) do not realise this issue because they have small fingers.
- I have tested this out to people who said that they did 'not' see any issues with their minis. I asked them to try using bigger area of their fingers to touch the lock screen and they 'ALL' had issues. I have asked them to ask their husband or boyfriend to try it and they were having the same issue.

3. It happens only on certain screens such as: lock screen, camera app from the lock screen, notifications from the lock screen, calls taken from the lock screen, shut down screen, phone call screens from certain applications i.e. WhatsApp, Kakaotalk, etc...

Based on the above circumstances people have figured out temporary solutions:
1. Use 0.15mm thickness screen protector.
2. Use cases which are open on the sides and bottom.
3. Use less part of your finger(s) - e.g. tip of a thumb, tip of an index finger
4. Use back tap - only problem with this is torch button and camera button in the lock screen will still have the problem.
5. Use Foil - Problem with this is that it looks messy.
Any recommendations on screen protectors that are .15mm or thinner?

EDIT: So you don't have to read thru all the pages, there is an issue with the lock screen not working properly with both a screen protector and a case. All user seem to have this issue, but Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem.
Please leave them feedback if you're having this issue. Below is the link and a template I made if you don't want to write it yourself:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

"There is a problem with the lock screen not detecting presses on the camera, flashlight or anything
unless you press very gently.
Issue only occurs when using BOTH a screen protector and a case.
If you touch something conductive like the frame or the camera lens frame it works
."

Right after I got my iPhone 12 Mini I put on a PanzerGlass screen protector and started using it.
My problem is touch on the lock screen, if i try to use the torch or pause/play music it only respons sometimes.
After i unlock the iPhone touch works great, but on the lockscreen I have to get lucky with the touch to get the response.
Anyone else having this issue?
Same problem with a Spigen screen protector and a Caseology case. Phone works normally with one or the other but not both. Frustrating.

Why can’t people use tempered glass without case in the interim? Till a solution is found. Or case without tempered glass, if somebody prefers that instead.

Won‘t that be a good enough temporary fix?

Options exist.

However, it’s a rough&dirty World out there...

...while awaiting my Otterbox Pro, I wrapped the mini in a decent sil case, and applied a Torras glassie...

...I work in the field, and the abrasiveness of Nature is relentless.

I *need* dust, sand, rock and mud protection . . . I also need the enjoyment of a functioning device :)

Regards, splifingate

I noticed a problem with the unlocked screen, it disappears after taking the phone in your hand. Case and screen protector on. Im from Poland.
