It's bizarre how discourse has become so factional nowadays - even when discussing tech!

Surely it's OK to have different phone sizes?

Why does it have to be that the 'other guy's' phone has to lose?
That's just the way it is in Wild, Wild West, where talk is cheap and men live or die based on MR iPhone ranking.

I think there are two reasons for the lower market share:
1. The fancier models always do well in the first quarters after release, that's when most enthusiasts buy their phones. iPhone 11 also didn't sell as well in the first few months as it did the rest of the year
2. More importantly, the mini branding likely also hurts it's sales. Most regular people just want whatever regular new iPhone model is out at the moment, they ask for iPhone 11 (last year) or iPhone 12 now and don't really look into the various other models that might be available. I bet if the mini was just called iPhone 12 it would've sold better.
Agreed on the naming.

5.4" iPhone
6.1" iPhone (Plus or Max)
6.1" iPhone Pro
6.7" iPhone Pro Max

That's what I would've done.

The 12 mini was already put at a price point that would be unappealing to most considering the other available options.

I honestly don't know of anyone who showed interest in it. Most I knew wanted the regular or Pro 12 and a few the Pro Max.

The SE is killing sales, as is poor marketing on an over flooded lineup.

In fact, the T-Mobile store by me doesn’t have the mini on display with the other iPhones, they have it next to all the Android phones.

My friend opted for the 12 when I told him the battery life is better...otherwise he would have gotten the mini.

Jpack mentions the 12 mini, you put a link to the HomePod mini instead????
If you had bothered to actually read the linked article before getting snarky..

"Lest we forget, pre-orders for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max also began last Friday, and while supplies appear to have been adequate enough to meet initial demand, the 256GB ‌iPhone 12 mini‌ in some colors and some ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max colors and capacities will not arrive until later in November or early December for orders placed now."

Agreed 100%. It's toxic how you get this happening. I'm an Aussie and have always had Americans heckling me when I say 'yeah but in Australia we get dudded on this and the prices are different...etc'. This kinda heckling is creeping into every corner of online discourse though.

I feel like there's a lot of troubled people in the world right now. All I can do is wish everybody the best. We'll get through 2021 together!

I really liked the 5c. Great little phone. And the different color offering certainly didn't hurt sales.

I don't put too much stock in analyst especially over such a short time line as this.
Yeah I never understood the analysts and suggestions the 5C sold badly. I saw that phone everywhere at the time. It was hugely popular with teenagers who used it as a crossover from being on Blackberry. Also, companies bought them as company phones for staff and sales teams. I still have a 5C that was given to me after my work replaced them with the 6S. I use it for listening to music while I’m out jogging as it’s small and light.

I think the thread is misleading as it gives the impression the 12 Mini sold badly overall, when in fact the only data available is from US sales. It may be that it sold better in different cultures. America is after all the nation of super size purchases, from cars, clothes to food portions. Perhaps big iPhones are their bag?

Wow, shocking, a phone which excels in mobility mostly for people with owning a tablet/notebook too doesn't generate big sales during a time when people generally stay home. Nowadays my greatest interaction with my phone is charging every other day, I won't pay for this 700 bucks. I am waiting for the 13 mini and will decide between them.

However, for bigger phones, which tend to be used as sole devices, the lockdown gives more reason to upgrade, not less.

This doesn't surprise me.

I was considering the mini and the 2020 SE. Then I realized it wasn't too smart to go for the mini over the regular 12 when you can get a larger screen and battery for $100 more.

So, for me, it then became a contest between the SE 2020 and the regular 12... When I found a new 2020 SE for $200, that cemented my choice, and I went with the SE. I'm mostly at home right now anyway and will be for the foreseeable future, so why spend $600 more on a phone that will be sitting with me in my house most of the time? By the time I emerge fully into society after this pandemic there will be a newer and better iPhone released from Apple that I can buy, or, if I still want the 12, it will be cheaper.

I still want the new screen design of the 12 series and the blue color, but I think I can make do when saving $600... that's quite the leap for features I don't really need but are just nice to have.

Anyway, bottom line is the 12 mini is not a budget iPhone, and most people who consider it probably realize that if they are spending that much on a 12 series phone, why not spend $100 more and just get the regular 12? I think there are very few people left who simply want a smaller phone - that's really the only audience for the 12 mini at its current price.

The only thing this reveals is that people don't want a fragmented system.. Steve Jobs used to say was a problem with other companies. I'd have an iPhone Mini but what puts me off is the lack of the Pro-Raw feature. No reason at all this cant be in it. It's just ridiculous marketing.

I see a lot of fishing for reasons. You're missing the mark. The reason is price. They priced the mini way too high and too close to the other models. If it were $100 cheaper, it would have bene a different story.

Bingo!

This man is correct

I still believe there is a strong market for small iPhones. I do also think people equate small iPhones with a small price too. Things would be different if the SE did not exist. For almost half the price you can get the SE which isn't that much bigger for than the Mini for so much less. The 12 simply is a much better value for only $100 more respective to their base models.

You are correct

For some reason, people take it personally if a device choice they've made isn't desired or agreed upon by others.

9% of 10's of millions of units at $700+ per unit is a lot of iPhone Mini's, a lot of revenue, and a lot of customers happy to not have to carry a device larger than they need.

I'm not suprised. I think iPhone Mini = cheap iPhone. People looking for a high-end phone probably want a big screen too as smaller screens are perceived (wrongly imo) as "lesser" screens.

An iPhone SE Mini would make more sense to me. But again, just my opinion.

Everyone I know loves theirs. It's the perfect form factor. The pro is too big. But the battery life is what's really killing sales.

I think the price is too high. Look at the pricing lineup, it's an odd place to slot in the mini, in my opinion.

$1100 - 12 Pro Max
$1000 - 12 Pro
$800 - 12
$700 - 12 Mini
$600 - 11
$500 - XR
$400 - SE

I was trying to convince my dad to get the mini - he had a first-gen SE. But he only cares about the size, not the screen, camera, SoC, or anything like that. Only size and that's it. But the second-gen SE is almost as small as the mini, but $300 less. Hard to argue shaving off those extra few mms is worth spending $300.
