No. I’m equating build quality to build quality.
Where is the deficiency with the regular iPhones versus the Pro models with respect to build quality? Both have the same basic design and glass fronts and backs. The only significant difference between them is a stainless steel band versus an aluminum band and preference there is really a matter of taste rather than build quality.

Reminds me of people clamoring for more manual transmissions in cars that aren’t the base model or more manuals in general. People wanted a smaller iPhone, but clearly the mass public isn’t having it.

I’m still baffled by the number of people who think that the mini is “too expensive.” It’s the same price as the iPhone 11 last year and the XR before it, and everyone thought the XR was a great deal when it came out.

Three years ago, I paid $1249 before tax and AppleCare for an iPhone X. A few months ago I got a better phone for $400 less in the iPhone 12 mini. These people who think that that’s unreasonable, or that the iPhone 12 hardware should be the same price as the iPhone SE with one (not two) inferior camera, a less expensive display, no 5G, and an older CPU are delusional.

i think because of its size to body ratio especially compared to the XR/11 that people will find it expensive and the other two phones affordable

I went from a Xs to a 12 mini and am quite pleased with it. I feel like the mini is going to be a slow-burn sleeper hit eventually, although my evidence is anecdotal. Four friends of mine all thought they wanted the "normal" 12 until they realized the display of the mini is the same width as a 6,7,8, but taller (and yet still a smaller device overall). Once this pandemic finally ends and people can see the things in person, I think a lot of folks coming from a 6,7,8 will go for the phone most comparable in size to what they already have despite the (imho) misleading "mini" label.
Maybe, but there are also people who are happy with the physical dimensions of a 6,7,8, as it fits in the pocket nicely, and would rather take more screen real estate for the same size, than same screen for smaller size. I'm definitely in that bucket. I do hope they continue with the mini though, and even add a mini pro, more choice is best.

Indeed. Unless you have freakishly small hands this form factor makes zero sense.
Are you kidding? It's almost exactly the same size as the 6/6S/7/8/SE2 (technically smaller, but you don't notice it). It's just about the largest size to reach all corners for someone with small to average sized hands.

Am I seriously the only one who thinks this size should be considered normal and not "small?" If you can't reach the top of the screen, it's not a normal-sized phone--it's a big one.

If I needed a new phone atm, 12 Mini would be perfect. I really miss the compact size of iPhone5; never held any newer iPhone as confidently in my hands (or as effortlessly wore it in my pocket). With screen almost to the bevels of the device, return of smaller size option absolutely makes sense. I hope it retains enough interest to "survive", the price is relatively high, though.
The 12 Mini is much closer to the size of the 6/6s/7/8/SE2, not the 5 or ones with that form factor. It would still probably feel a little big if you're used to the size of the 5.

We probably have different utility for a phone. For me its only quaternary after a MacBook, iPad, Pc, use it's smartphone features sparesly like when commuting on a crowded subway, have a quick smoke outside, or when going out. So I have a mental limit for phone prices around 400-500 bucks. But I perfectly get that people with more heavy usage won't bat an eye for paying over a 1000 for their primary device, just like I do for the aforementioned trio.
Actually, that’s fairly similar to my use case. I have a MacBook that I use during the day for web browsing and email, and an iPad and Apple TV for video.

I rarely watch video on my phone. Why would I? It’s not intended for that and there are better devices for doing that. I use it for messaging on the go, phone calls, and taking some pictures while out in the world — things mobile phones are actually supposed to be used for.

I just don’t think $800ish once every two or three years is that unreasonable for a portable device with a good camera, quality build, and the latest CPU, modern cellular modem, and quality display.

Oh please, there’s barely anything different about them, except the giant camera system that won’t fit into any device except the Max. The mini got an incredible percentage of the flagship features.
Oh please, the 12 Pro + 12 Pro Max sold more than the 12 + 12 Mini. People love the Pro models. Not just for the features, but also for the colours and prestige. I think a large part of the problem with the Mini is that it comes off as a budget phone, and yet is way more expensive than the SE. They would have done better by making a 12 Pro Mini instead of 12 Mini. No one wants to spend that much on a phone and still look cheap. I bet if they made some 12 Pro Mini's with some exclusive colours, they would have sold very well to cashed up women. Then they would have been cute, classy, and prestigious, instead of the small budget 12 phone without the budget price.

You missed the point. The original post was asking for all of the features of the Pro Max to be crammed into a Pro mini. That's not possible with current tech. And even if it was, Apple would just cram even more stuff into the 6.7" chassis, like yet another camera or some other feature. People wanting a Pro mini are going to have to come to terms with the fact that you'll never fit what you can into a larger chassis into a smaller one.

??? It has the same exact cameras as the iPhone 12.

Sorry I thought by "latest tech" you meant the best they have to offer (Pro line)

In any case - back to 5G - It would have been sensible to save that for a year on the Mini, where battery life is specifically a concern not seen in larger devices.

Let it roll out another year - it needs it (5G I mean)

Oh. Well, in a perfect world I’d love a “mini Pro” but I accept the limits of physics and space. :)

5G was actually one of the main reasons I bought a 12 mini this year instead of waiting. If they had relegated it to the Pro models, I might’ve gone for the 12 Pro instead. The battery life on the 12 mini is fine with me, and I have 5G set to “5G On”.

True that. My suggestion is more along the lines of making it a prestige model, it doesn't have to have ALL the features, just as the 12 Pro doesn't have ALL the features of the 12 Pro Max, but it can have some of them, and especially the exclusive colours.

This proves that Apple customer base is 80% trend-following teens who don't know how to choose what they need (I mean currently, obviously their customer base was far more intelligent and smart a couple of decades ago).

I don't use the camera much, I take around 20-30 photos a year. For me peak camera was reached around 2013, anything better is a waste on me. And I find dual-triple cameras and camera bumps extremly ugly.
