Good decision IMO. We always want more when what we have is enough.

Righto - and Apple feels you have too much money, and so they want more of yours. Let Apple decide how much of your money is 'enough'. They've trained some of you very well. Oh, and now that you don't have a charger, it just so happens that Apple is offering a new MagSafe charger. Perfect coincidence!

Apple will generously "recycle" your old charger at no charge to you, as a trade-in gesture when you purchase your new charger at full cost at any Apple store. All for the environment.

They cut the USBC charger price by $10 (33%), so there’s that. https://www.macrumors.com/2020/10/13/apple-selling-20w-usb-c-power-adapter/

Though for many (if not most) there’s little need to buy that charger since everyone’s existing Lightning cables, and the USBA ports they’re connected to, will continue to work. As will any existing Qi charger pads.

Yup, just the extra $19 for something that was already included before.
Only for those with no existing USBC sources and no existing Lightning cables / USBA sources.

Which these days just isn’t going to be a whole lot of folks.

In any case more than convenient for Apple, while not so much so to a variety of consumers.

I wonder if some Apple stores will run out of the USB C charging brick on Friday with plenty of people needing one.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think the MagSafe charger comes with a power brick either.

Yes, but how many people will want a new one to go with their new iPhone. How many people have sold their chargers with previous phones and need to sell their charger again?

I suspect not many will find they need to buy anything.

We shall see.

As expected, the entire iPhone 12 lineup ships without EarPods or a power adapter in the box, with only a Lightning to USB-C charging cable included. Apple touted the environmental benefits of no longer bundling these accessories, noting that the move reduces carbon emissions and avoids the mining and use of rare-earth elements.

With these accessories removed, iPhone 12 models ship in a thinner box, as seen below.

"As part of our efforts to reach our environmental goals, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini do not include a power adapter or EarPods," reads Apple's website, with a similar message shown for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. "Please use your current Apple power adapter and headphones, or purchase these accessories separately."

Last month, the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE launched without chargers in the box, so it is no surprise that iPhones have followed suit. Starting today, the iPhone SE, iPhone 11, and iPhone XR also ship without EarPods or a charger in the box. In contrast, iPads are still bundled with power adapters in the box for now.

I currently have an iPhone 6S.

May I use this charger for the iPhone 12 Pro?

Or does it provide slower-than-possible charging for the iPhone 12 Pro?

I'm assuming I have to buy this to get best-speed charging. Am I correct?

You can simply use you existing charging solution - the iphone 12 pro will charge from a lightning cable attached to a USBA power source. So if you keep the cable and charger from your 6S, it will work with the 12.

If you want the fastest charge possible though, yes that adapter would work. Personally I'd opt for a multi-port charger from Anker or RAVpower or similar though. I dislike single-port units as they waste outlets.

Also consider if you truly need "best-speed" charging - do you often find yourself needing to charge in a hurry to avoid being out? (rhetorical question - you needn't answer here, just factor that into your decision)

Thank you. I would definitely want to have the fastest charger possible, as long as it's Apple-branded and won't hurt the phone.

I'd I spend $1200 on a new phone, I can definitely spend an additional $20 to get the best charging experience possible.
