This is a curious piece of tech. With the standard "tape measure" app, you had to set specific points to measure. With this, the software apparently is able to distinguish someone's feet from the ground they're standing on, and the top of someone's head from the background around them. It also has to calculate their height in relation to something. I wonder how it all works. I assume it's judging the distance to the object, and then inferring height from that.

You make a point cloud from the LIDAR and then look at the edges where distance changes significantly.

My experience so far - about 1-2 inches off. Crashes when two people are on screen. It’s cool. I wish they did more with the lidar. Seems like a gimmick so far. I wish you could see what it was doing on the photos

Just did myself and my 4 kids. It was way off. Had me at 1.71m on first attempt then 1.82m on 2nd. I'm 1.83.
I've got 4 very annoyed kids now. :)
EDIT: 2020 iPad Pro 11"

So much for privacy. Can it give us their other measurements as well?

The iPhone 13 will have an X-Ray scanner, and then we'll truly know all of a person's physical dimensions. 😜

You're measuring it wrong.™

Oh great, is this another bug I’ll be reporting for 7 versions of iOS just like how I report a bug in every beta about how Siri keeps talking in “miles” as if I’m from Rome 300BCE 🤨

I've noticed Google Maps navigation switching to "miles" when we're near the US border. We're in Canada. Everyone always says how Google Maps is superior to Apple Maps, but this is just one of the several issues that I've experienced with it. I've never had Siri use miles as a unit while in Canada.

But that said, I also don't measure my weight in kg or my height in meters. I'm 5'4" tall and "too many" pounds heavy. 😜

I can’t imagine what else it will be used to measure.

Don’t pretend you didn’t think that too. 👀

Finally, I can tell if my date is lying about height ... or see if a kid really is tall enough to go on a ride

this is absolutely inappropriate to replace stone age glorious ruler with this nerdy electronic devil tricks!!!

I'm 5'5 and the only people who give a damn about my height are other people. Height isn't a measure of your worth, y'all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm sure you've had to develop thick skin and plenty of comebacks.

Good for you, but it doesn't change the fact people do lie about their height...constantly. You're on the shorter side, so it's obvious you aren't 6'. That's probably better. It's the 5'8 dudes saying they're 6' that's annoying.
