I'm 5'5 and the only people who give a damn about my height are other people. Height isn't a measure of your worth, y'all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is a measure of social sexual status. Just like money for guys and beauty for girls. It is what it is. Obviously not a measure of personal value.

1, this is trivial to photoshop.
It's not actually that trivial with Photoshop, you'd have to know the lens used, and the exact distance from the subject when the photo was taken. And even then it wouldn't be all that accurate because you probably have the phone angled (not perfectly straight on) and you have lens distortion (which isn't necessarily linear). Furthermore, the subject probably isn't standing straight up, but that's also going to be a problem with lidar.

Commercial: Really? 145 huh? Whelp, my new iPhone 12 Pro Max says here you're clocking in at 155... (*Hot chocolate thrown in face*). Voiceover: "Get your significant other a new iPhone this Christmas."

As person working on 3D CAD, I hope some engineers developing kind of LIDAR based 3D scanner to measure dimension. I often converting object manually to 3D measuring manually either with digital caliper or my trusty ruler. It would very convenient way just shooting by camera.

My Xperia phone can scanned small object directly to 3D but quality of file is leave a lot to be desired.

And 2… what is this Tinder obsession with people’s height? 🤨
Well, its more like “what is the European and American female obsession with height”?

It does make alot of sense that an American company thought of this. Im sure all of the height supremacist shallow women who reside in the countries that make up apples largest market (america and europe), will love it.

Just what I needed.
Likely the inaccuracy is +- 1 inch at best. I've never read anywhere that the measure app is accurate. But maybe the LIDAR scanner has improved on that.
Maybe, but I doubt it. AR measuring has been a gimmick for anything other than very rough approximate and can't be used as a tool at all. If I'm trying to figure out whether a piece of furniture will fit within a margin of 5 inches, sure. It's fine for that. But its so different each time you measure that I wouldn't use it for anything requiring less tolerance than that, which is virtually all kinds of measuring.

This is going to be pretty useful for measuring my kids. I swear the growth spurts come out of nowhere.

If you need LIDAR to determine whether someone is the height they say they are then what’s the point?
Why someone needs to be serious on a joke. 🤔

What our society has become?..

So much for privacy. Can it give us their other measurements as well?
Yep. I want to know her bra cup. 😅

I've been waiting for this feature! I can't tell you how many times I've thought, "If only I had a way to remotely measure that random stranger's height, life would be perfect!"

Just think: the current implementation of LiDAR to measure someone's height using a phone is just ridiculous and looks clumsy. When the rumored Apple Glass comes out with LiDAR built-in, measuring someone's height will seem so much more intuitive. All of these features are building up to something big in a next-gen device: the Apple Glass:
  • MagSafe in the iPhone 12. This will be the defacto way to charge the Apple Glass, just like the Apple Watch uses a proprietary, but similar charging mechanism
  • LiDAR: it will have much more expanded use in the Apple Glass. Apple is just getting started with LiDAR in the iPad Pro and now, the iPhone
  • UWB chip: once again, more expanded functionality in the Apple Glass
  • 5G: kinda obvious that the Apple Glass will have it. You can't roam around your world and have an AR glass without giving you contextual information through the internet without a data connection. So, the Apple Glass will obviously have it
That's all I can glean from the iPhone 12's functionality that will transfer over to the Apple Glass. My "armchair" analysis.
