It's not actually that trivial with Photoshop, you'd have to know the lens used, and the exact distance from the subject when the photo was taken. And even then it wouldn't be all that accurate because you probably have the phone angled (not perfectly straight on) and you have lens distortion (which isn't necessarily linear). Furthermore, the subject probably isn't standing straight up, but that's also going to be a problem with lidar.

You’re reading that wrong. I’m saying use the Measure app to take a photo, then change the “measurement” later on to whatever you want.

As person working on 3D CAD, I hope some engineers developing kind of LIDAR based 3D scanner to measure dimension. I often converting object manually to 3D measuring manually either with digital caliper or my trusty ruler.

Can be done. The trick is to do it in a sensor tiny enough to fit in a phone.

Neat feature, but is Apple purposely doing this on new tech to upgrade to newer phones only ? I would think with all the software capable now-a-days to tweaking photos, light, contrast and such, the same camera could be used to measure people as well..

oh well.. perhaps Apple can figure that one out.

This is going to be pretty useful for measuring my kids. I swear the growth spurts come out of nowhere.
Don’t throw out the measuring tape. I measured the same kid with it several times and got wildly different results from 4’11 to 5’3. She’s 5’3”. It said my husband was 5’11, then 6’0. He’s 6’2 and that’s from them measuring his height at the doctor’s office. And I know he’s not 5’11, because my dad’s 5’11 and he’s much taller than my dad. Everyone else was asleep so I’ll try getting more heights tomorrow, but I’m not counting on this app. It’s okay for an estimate.

So much for privacy. Can it give us their other measurements as well?

yes - Apple now extended Airdrop with Pantsdrop to share measurement information between your Apple devices.
Unfortunately my size didn’t fit in the wide angle camera lens bounding box so I hope Apple will improve optics and implement the followup to LiDAR, aka WiDAR.

Well, its more like “what is the European and American female obsession with height”?

It's just just women.... it's a whole range of societal issues. Men under 5'7'' can't even buy clothes in normal stores, they have to go to children's stores or a handful of rare shops that sell things for smaller men in Europe.

This requires LiDAR, and the iPhone 12 Pro is the first iPhone to have it. The only other device with LiDAR is the iPad Pro (2020).

This is a curious piece of tech. With the standard "tape measure" app, you had to set specific points to measure. With this, the software apparently is able to distinguish someone's feet from the ground they're standing on, and the top of someone's head from the background around them. It also has to calculate their height in relation to something. I wonder how it all works. I assume it's judging the distance to the object, and then inferring height from that.

Yes it’s called trigonometry, a curious tech that’s been around since 300 BC.

As usual, there’s an xkcd for that:

I'm a little skeptical about this feature, since my previous attempts to use this tool have given less than accurate results when measuring objects as simple as boxes and book cases.

Wow, what a gamebreaking feature! /s
Not really, why the hell does the iPad Pro 2020 not do that? It also has LIDAR but the way it measures really sucks, I never used it due to the sheer fact that it's not reliable.

Should be super useful if you want to know how tall someone is.
Of course but most people already know their height. Maybe for kids that are always growing. Since we can’t guarantee the lidar scanner is 100% right every time we can’t even check someone’s height and say they lied because the sensor might be off.

You and I both!

Oh great, is this another bug I’ll be reporting for 7 versions of iOS just like how I report a bug in every beta about how Siri keeps talking in “miles” as if I’m from Rome 300BCE 🤨

EDIT: Nope, checked and it’s actually proper metric in the real world! 😁 Hopefully one day Siri will leave Ancient Rome and talk in a human language when it comes to distances 😂 (Literally reported this for at least 6 years and Apple still haven’t fixed it! 😂😭)

Maps directions, too, but I imagine they are integrated with Siri.

It is even worse on the watch where it defaults to "freedom units" despite my setting the Maps app to metric.

Sorry, not sorry - I would rather use the same measures as the rest of the world. Whenever travel is an option again it will be nice to have one fewer unnecessary obstacle to communication.

I couldn't get any readings on iPhone 12 Pro. Tried few different subjects and environments.
