I have a launch day IPhone 12 Pro Max and battery health is at 87% - should I be concerned? I know Apple won’t change a battery until it hits 80%.

Just downloaded coconutBattery and it shows my iPhone 12 PM has a battery health of 96%, compared to 94% in the Settings app.

Is one estimate more accurate than the other?

Just hit 89% today.

try 85% 😖

Just my own experience, I'm at 83% right now (Drain has been constant and freakishly rapid since Feb., sorry to say...so 87% may turn to 86% shortly..and so on).

Apple Support, Store will not change the battery...even when I said I will pay for the darn thing (I have AC+). Because "Battery is optimal, normal."

Even when I explain "this battery, phone is nowhere near 'optimal', it doesn't hold a charge, Horrible drain 15-20% just going to the store for 45min, 1hr." they can't / won't do anything. I am currently using a Belkin MagSafe portable battery when I go out.

Won’t even swap the batt if you’re willing to pay for it? That’s really messed up.

That said, 15-20% batt consumption in an hour sounds more like you got a rogue app or stuck processing loop problem than a battery degradation problem. Might take some full reboot/restarts; force closing apps; check for overheating; and comparing the apps (%-batt vs hr-use) in the battery graph section…. to zero the problem.

The way my battery is going I'm sure I'll be at 80% within a few weeks so I guess they can change it then.

I've actually been hoping for this all summer, diminish to 80% fast so I can get the silly battery.
Until there is this external memo from Apple itself, a "battery replacement" program, Apple employees hands are tied and must go by this goofball 80% rule? (I see the free fix for "some 12's, no audio issue" program kicked in 2 days ago), How Apple Corp. doesn't know by now out batteries...many are trash - forcing a replacement program for this is beyond me. They just expect most will upgrade to the 13s. Well, not all of are doing that.

I forgot what IOS it was, back in late Spring. My Vivint home security app was running constant as well as my email.app - 100% in the background. I removed Vivint, I force stopped email, that seemed to solve the insane drain I was having overnight. (Very similar to LAST Summer's IOS with Apple Music, in my case Dropbox running all the time, killing battery life - yet 21 month XS Max "health" was still at a 96%)

Right now, Find My... and Tile app will run all the time, or it won't. Odd, but these do not seem to consume that much drain from what I can tell. I've wiped this phone out multiple times, apps...did clean installs of the OS since Spring. Just doesn't seem to make a difference anymore.

Maybe it could be because I rarely let it go below 70% charge. I’m always “topping” it off and some of the times, I’m using a 5W charger…

Down to 97% the last few weeks. Bought 12 iPhone Pro Max launch day. 5w charger.

Interesting video. I agree with the premise that wireless charging seems to introduce a lot of unneeded heat - I've seen this with my wife and mother in-law's MagSafe chargers.

Leaving phone out in car during hot day till it overheats will do a lot more damage than not doing 40-80. OK, so he has a point there.

What most people don't realize about this graph - most iPhones won't even hit 300 cycles before MOST people replace them. So with that knowledge, there really isn't much of a difference in the first 500 cycles on this graph. It really starts to show a difference past 1000 cycles, which most iPhone users will never see. So 40-80 does help but not a lot if you're buying a new phone every few years.

We also have rapid charging voltage and how it affects the number of cycles as well.

Anyway : People shouldn't freak out about 40-80. And someone who babies their phone doing everything right may get a bad battery from the factory - there's a lottery there - so just using your phone is good advice. But some of us find it fun to do 40-80 :). Life is short though.

I took my phone to yet another store, this was the 3rd in store try. They finally agreed to repalce the battery. The genius claimed that my 89% battery health was normal for a 10 month old phone. I told him that I just want to be able to sleep at night if they could replace the battery at cost. He told me this was the first time they replaced an iPhone 12 series battery in that store. So to those that are getting rejected dont give up and keep on trying other stores if you can. I have several stores not to far away from me so I just kept on trying. The genius also said he doesnt think any of battery issues would be solved by a battery replacement, but he promised to resolve the issue if this battery replacement doesn’t fix it.

Just got my new battery installed on thursday. Battery seemed to be performing just like my phone did when I first got it back in October 2020. Today the battery is acting very weird. I only used the phone for a few minutes and now its down to 95%. I looked at the battery a few times since I got up and it showed 100% and now it shows 95%. That’s a huge jump for no reason with hardly any usage. Looks like ill be selling my 12 pro and getting the 13 when it comes out. Hopefully the 13 series doesn’t have the same battery issues.
