well, good news is that it could be fixed with software update.... that is, if enough people write Apple Feedback reports. *hint hint* ;)

I'd be so annoyed if my thousand dollar phone had this "little" issue.

I have this issue too. There is some focus breathing and then it fails to focus up close. Although if you switch to the ultra-wide or telephoto lens for macro shots, there isn’t a problem. Seems to be the only case with the wide angle? Hopefully a software update can address this.

Focus breathing occurs only with zoom lenses.

I suggest trying macro mode in Camera+, which is more reliable. Occam’s Razor says that the simplest explanation is usually the best: you may just be inside the camera’s minimum focusing distance.

Another one of those issues most likely to get fixed in the upcoming iOS 14.2 update. But as someone pointed out already, try maintaining a longer minimum distance of at least 8 cm’s.

Well, making photos with a longer minimum distance, more then 8 cm is a workaround, but not the fixing of the problem.
As you all can see in a video above, in which someone holds an iPhone 11 Pro next to an iPhone 12 Pro and the 11 Pro focuses perfectly instead of the 12 Pro...

Hi, no problems on my 12 Pro, holding the phone 3 to 6cm distance to the keyboard...

I can confirm mine has the same problem. Above around 6-7 cm no problems. Even when i tap the screen to manual focus. Everything below 6-7 cm distance gets blurry and the phone cannot focus.

I did some testing with Halide and on manual focus the phone can focus down to about 8cm, IIRC about the same distance as my 11 Pro. At the same distance AF doesn't work reliably at all. will test some more tonight with different subjects to see if the texture etc. of the subject makes any difference.

Today I was from the same retailer where I bought the iPhone and I had the opportunity to prove a 12 pro in demonstration and has the same type of defect or whatever is identical to mine. Possible 2 units that have failed? Or will everything be solved with iOS 14.2?

So after some research, LG makes the high end 12 pro max ones, wile o film and sharp makes the 12 and 12 mini ones. So this is a issue between these 3 suppliers, but I doubt it's LG. Maybe that o film... Anyway, there you have the camera lottery... 😂 😂 😂 😂

I'm curious if this issue exist on iPhone 12? Since 12 and 12 Pro have the same main camera, if this is not an issue on the 12, then it very well could be caused by the LiDar sensor.

The First clear picture is from my Iphone 7+ and the second blurry one is from a 12 pro taken at the same height.
I didn't notice this issue before, seems weird. I can do some more tests with a regular 12 tomorrow and post more results.

Both 12 pros my wife and I have exhibit this issue. I would bet this will be solved in a future software update. Hopefully that update is 14.2 or a 14.1.1.

Here is another video showing the issue. I believe the easiest way to replicate this is by moving away and near some texts. Comparing my old iPhone 11 pro with 12 pro side by side, you can easily tell iPhone 12 pro struggles to focus as you move closer to an object. I tried this with both the default camera app and ProCam, so it's not an issue with the stock app itself.

From the video you shot it appears that if you move in very slowly the auto focus works. It is when you move in quickly that it has the issue.

I'd be so annoyed if my thousand dollar phone had this "little" issue.

Did my part and reported both of ours.
