Liking the 12 Pro so far but a couple of things bother me.

This thing gets warm. My XR never felt this warm when holding it.

Battery life is disappointing. I woke up at 8 AM after letting it fully charge all night. It’s a little before 12 PM and it’s already at 37%. And to be honest I haven’t really even used it much today.

It’s only been a day, I’m holding hope my battery will calibrate as the OS optimizes. Worst case we can just turn 5G off until there are more towers for the phone to cling to. Should equal the 11 Pro that way.

If your coming from a Max which I am as well you'll definitely notice battery differences. That being said mines still at 88% took it off the charger at 8AM now 11AM. Give the battery a few days to calibrate itself in.

The more I am using it the more I am getting use to the screen differences and actually to my liking.

Thanks! I set up my phone as new for two reasons. First and foremost, I use the acquisition of each new iPhone as a chance to do some “Spring cleaning” on the apps in my phone. So, rather than port them all in, I take a hard look at them and only bring in those I know I’ll use or need. It’s just something I like to do. Second, I have a memory of some people introducing little bugs and glitches into their new phone and there was speculation that it was a result of restoring a previous phone’s setup into a new phone. I don’t hear much about this anymore but a couple years ago, it seemed to cause problems for some. I actually like going through the whole process each year and it’s enjoyable for me to annually revisit the options for the settings, etc. So, I just figured I’d stick with setting it up as new.

If you are asking how to import pics into these posts, I am writing this on an iPad and can just click the icon for “Insert Image” and follow the prompts. Sorry if I misunderstood your question!

Thanks, I meant how do you import pics to your phone given, you set up as “new”?

I presume all his photos are in iCloud. When you set up as anew device and sign into iCloud later, you need to install apps individually to get them back on your device. All other iCloud stuff will sync to the phone.

WOW. Just wow.

Just picked up my naked iPhone 8 for the first time since yesturday.

Ohh my god, that is one small phone. It is practically non existant. I dont feel it in my pocket at all. It feels like holding a credit card.

To all of you getting a 12 Pro Max, I salute you and respect you, that will be one hell of a large phone to carry around.

Im almost thinking about trading my 12 pro for a mini...
Such an incremental upgrade. When is Apple going to innovate again? :/
all relative to where you are on the iPhone purchase cycle. Upgraded from an 8plus and it’s night and day difference. Upgrading from an 11 would not be something I would have done.

Since I live in a small town a good 45 minutes from a 5G tower I just turned it off for now and went to LTE. No more heat issues. Let’s see if that helps with the battery as well. When I’m traveling around the state for work I’ll turn 5G back on and give it a whirl.

It’s stainless steel what did he think would happen. Just wipe it down every once in a while if you want it to look new and shiny. Jeez people complain about everything. “Well guys here’s why you shouldn’t drink water..... it’s wet! Pretty disappointing I expected more.”
Yeah, he’s an odd one. Love some of his tech review stuff, but he also as some very strange opinions. T this point I never meet anyone in the real world who doesn’t rock a case.

I go caseless but seriously it’s stainless steel it’s gonna get prints on it. Mine gets prints but I wipe it down every night or whenever I’m done with my phone and I feel like the sides look too covered in prints. It’s crazy how some people think, they nitpick at every single little thing.

And why are there so many dirty finger prints on the top and bottom of the device? Was he picking it up length ways or something!

The pictures made me think he had let the phone fall into a pool of mud.

Then I remember why everywhere recommends people to wash your hands and yet people still die from the human malware, with folks not fully understanding why...
I thought it was a Dbrand skin.. Lmao

The guy obviously touched his phone all over on purpose before taking those pics. I just checked my graphite 12P that I've been using for 24 hours caseless, and it's no where near that. You can see some finger prints (more on the buttons) in some lighting, but otherwise it looks how normal stainless steel surfaces do.

Very nice review, and as others have said, what a beautiful cat and such well-taken pictures, too! Based on your description, I take it you literally turned on the camera and pushed the shutter button. Or did you apply any settings (Night Mode, exposure modification, etc.) before taking them?

I also received my iPhone 12 Pro 256Gb Pacific Blue yesterday, and I mostly agree with your sentiments. It’s a stunning color. I had the 11 Pro Midnight Green and grew a bit weary of it over time - it began to look “dingy“ to me at points. This color does not give me that sense, and only time will tell if the same thing happens here. But I’m not anticipating that. The OP is right about the handling and feel. I remember thinking the iPhone 5 felt a little uncomfortable to hold as a result of the flat sides, but this phone is a pure pleasure to manipulate. And superficially speaking, I LOVE that the design language is now more unified with the iPad Pro!

Time will tell as far as performance goes. I can’t make any big assumptions yet because I think the phone is probably still setting up stuff / indexing in the background, and like every new iPhone I get, it’s a bit more sluggish in the first couple days. That always goes away in a day or two, and at that point, my experience is that there is a significant speed jump.

My biggest frustrations this year may have nothing to do with the phone. First, I always set up my iPhones as “new” and for the life of me, I can not understand why every time I do, certain apps like Apple’s Notes do not update themselves in the background. The only way I can get my notes to populate is by keeping the Notes app open, and the moment the phone goes into Standby mode or I change to another app, it stops updating. I’ve checked every relevant setting and they all appear to be correctly set. This is only a problem when bringing in the notes the first time; after they finally do all show up, it seems to push updates as expected (if I create a new note on my iPad, it is immediately synced to the iPhone, etc.). It’s bizarre to me that this seems to happen every year/every new iPhone, and I have to assume it has something to do with the fact that millions of people are simultaneously hitting Apple’s iCloud servers, and it’s causing an intended or unintended limitation on automatic “push” of data to individual users. The frustration is that it takes a day or two to get all the notes and requires me to constantly initiate it by opening the Notes app. A first-world problem, for sure, and it’s not the end of the world (just frustrating, is all).

Second, I have had a very mixed experience with this year’s crop of accessories. So far, the MagSafe charger is just abysmal for me. Using an Anker 30W per port USB-C Power Delivery charger, it charges so slowly that I have to believe there is something wrong with it. I would estimate about a one percentage-point increase every 10-15 minutes. It also seems to generate an inordinate amount of heat. I’ll give it a few more days to see if Apple provides more news about what’s going on here, but if nothing changes, the two I purchased will be going back.

I also disliked Apple’s clear case; I found it very hard to attach and detach from the iPhone and immediately began worrying about scratches while doing so (I tend to use the iPhone caseless, but always buy one case for times when I want a little extra protection).

The Apple silicone cases, on the other hand, seem really nice this year. They are easy to take on/off, feel really nice in the hand, have responsive and tactile buttons, and come in attractive colors. I bought the Product (RED), Kumquat, and Plum with the intention of keeping the Kumquat (or the clear one) and probably returning the others. However, the Plum is just gorgeous and it’s the one I’ll probably keep. And that’s with me having an inherent bias towards Kumquat because orange is my favorite color. All of them are great; but in the case of the Kumquat color, I couldn’t remove the image of “Circus Peanuts” (Google it if you don’t know what these are) from my head when this case was on my phone! :p

I don’t think I have the photographic skills of the OP, but here are a few pictures of our little guy, taken with the 12 Pro. I made no edits at all; I snapped the photos and uploaded them here. The first two are “Photo” mode; the third was shot in “Portrait” mode.

I’m also including a shot of the Graphite 12 Pro and Pacific Blue 12 Pro side-by-side. I couldn’t decide which one I would like, so I purchased both. Both are beautiful, and I struggled with the decision. The Graphite is gorgeous and is a perfect aesthetic match for my Graphite Series 6 and would have fulfilled my neurotic tendency to match stuff, but in the end, I couldn’t pass up the beauty of the blue.

All in all, I’m excited about this year’s iPhone, but am extremely disappointed in the MagSafe charger. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is a correctable issue, however.

Damn I’m so conflicted with the blue and graphite colors, I’ll be getting the pro max and I’m completely torn. Awesome cat pics by the way!

I came across another thread last night where people posted pics from their new phone, but can’t find it (it had a dog in the first few posts). Anyhow, here are some pictures I took under similar lighting conditions switching from super wide, wide and telephoto on the 12 Pro.

Can I ask a really dumb question? There's a matte colored wrap on the back of the 12 pro, almost like a clear sticker covering the entirety of the phone except for the apple logo. Are you suppose to peel this off or leave it? Never seen it on a iPhone before (I skipped the 11).

the back of the phone is frosted glass!

Upgraded from a Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro to the Pacific Blue 12 Pro. I really like the Midnight Green color better but the case on the 12 is much better than the 11.

I received the phone late on Friday. I guess I’m last on the delivery route. This means that I haven’t spent any time with the cameras yet because it is a miserable day here today.

I live west of Boston and my town doesn’t have 5G on T-Mobile yet but several nearby towns do. I drove to a spot where I could get a good 5G signal to test the speed. This was clearly low-band 5G and it wasn’t fast. I tried both “5G auto” and “5G on” and got the same speed of around 60 Mbps down and 14 Mbps up. I then switched to LTE and got nearly identical results of 59 Mbps down and 13 Mbps up.

I wasn’t really expecting much but this seemed particularly slow so when got home I tried my LTE connection and got 92 Mbps down and 31 Mbps up. So my town has faster LTE than my neighboring town has on 5G. Decidedly odd.

Everything else seems to have gone well. Overnight the background downloads and whatever other network activity seems to have completed. I got typical speeds on GeekBench 5: ~1500/4000 and ~9300 compute. Everything feels pretty fast.

Battery seems normal. I’ve used the phone very heavily today and I’m down to about 30% remaining at 6 pm after taking the phone off the charger at 7:30 am. Battery stats say my screen-on time is 9 hours 15 minutes and screen off is 11 minutes. So the phone has been in use practically all day.

Overall, I’m satisfied with the upgrade. The best feature is the new case with the flat sides. So much more comfortable to hold. 5G on T-Mobile is disappointing as expected. And maybe tomorrow will be sunny so I can test the cameras properly.
