Congratulations on your new iPhone. Hope you will have a happy time using it.

Would you please tell me whether your 12Pro has the grey color mmWave 5G patch on the side? I am wondering whether only the Verizon phones this patch, or all iPhone 12's sold in US have it.
All US iPhones have it. ATT and TMO are using mmWave as well. It’s just that for a while that’s all Verizon had so they made a bigger deal if it.

Coming from an iPhone X. I have bought an iPhone 12 Pro 256 GB pacific blue.

The design is incredible! Beautiful to behold (like all iPhones, but this one goes a step further). The transition from glass to stainless steel without a third material between them feels really good.

Handling is great. It stays well in your hand (even smaller hands). It’s well-balanced. Doesn’t feel too heavy compared to the iPhone X. I have very dry hands so usually I need a case to make sure the phone doesn’t easily slip from my hands. This new iPhone despite its slick metal back, holds perfectly well, thanks to the stainless steel chassis.

It is very quick. Almost too quick! Amazing speed even in 4G (no 5G in my area)

Camera is amazing compared to the iPhone X. Much, MUCH better performance in low light conditions. Impressed by the capabilities of night shift and the ability to make some manual changes. I’ve got a lot of things to explore.

I’ve noticed the slight difference everybody’s been talking about, between the iPhone X’s screen and this one. The iPhone X is slightly more blue, also cooler. Honestly, I can barely see the difference, let alone capture that on a photo. If you stare long enough at both screens side-by-side, the eye notices the difference. The iPhone X’s screen therefore looks also more contrasted, which makes reading more comfortable.
I guess it's a question of getting your eyes to get used to this difference. Like OP mentioned before, once your eyes adapt to the new screen, it is fine. It kinda reminds me of when I got my iMac 5K retina, it took some time until my eyes adjusted to this screen.

All in all, I am really very happy and can't wait to explore it under better lighting conditions (it has rained here for 36 hours straight!)

Photo example: a slightly cropped photo of my siberian, Pasha, as he briefly looked up to me and I had a fraction of a second to shoot the pic as he was busy playing around with a dry leaf. No edits whatsoever, apart from the cropping The level of detail is incredible, even though on the pic below the format was changed to JPEG (done on the Mac with Preview), and there is some loss in the fur details as compared to the original HEIC.

Almost all iPhone screens will have a slightly warm rendition when new. It takes a month or so for them to become fully neutral. Unless your phone has a glaringly warm rendition, I would not worry about it.

Was the Speedtest screen shot taken when you were near the 5G UW tower? Because it’s not showing on your phone that you’re on UW connection.
Yep. I took the tower picture and ran the speed test one after the other. That’s why I wrote “not the specs and speeds”.
This is what i got a few days ago in CT on 4G LTE on T-Mobile! Something seems off with Verizon 5G.
Definitely! I might need to reach out to them to find out more.

On a different subject, does anyone feels like we are back with the iPhone 4/4S? The 12 surely looks and feels like their bigger brother.

Thanks for adding the detailed reaction. I'm coming from an iPhone X too so was hoping it would feel like a nice upgrade. Unfortunately even though I ordered at 13:04pm (UK) my delivery isn't until Monday. Beautiful cat by the way!

The "gold" iPhone 12 Pro looks like a beige PC that was left in front of a sunny window for a decade. Horrific aesthetic. What were they thinking. Never pre-ordering again.

I learned yesterday the colors only refer to the stainless steel not so much the glass back. I’m still skeptic about that but it was definitely news to me.

Coming from a 11PM now have the 12 pro. Honestly I really like the size and form factor, lighter and more pocketable then the Max’s. My only lingering regret is going to be missing out on the extra screen real-estate, but with the 12PM being even taller and heavy this year I just can’t. Tired of fumbling around with the bigger phones!!

Here are some pictures!!

WOW. Just wow.

Just picked up my naked iPhone 8 for the first time since yesturday.

Ohh my god, that is one small phone. It is practically non existant. I dont feel it in my pocket at all. It feels like holding a credit card.

To all of you getting a 12 Pro Max, I salute you and respect you, that will be one hell of a large phone to carry around.

Im almost thinking about trading my 12 pro for a mini...

Does anyone know if the mmwave window is glass or plastic?

I keep touching it and thinking it’s glass but that seems unlikely for such a small part. The way it refracts light on the grey tinted base makes me think glass as well.

Maybe plexiglass?

Hopefully ifixit will have the answer when they finish their teardown

Friends of mine who have iPhone 7 and similarly sized iPhones are all considering the mini. It really depends if the form factor is important to you. In my case, I wanted to stick as close as possible to the form factor of iPhone X, and this is why I got the Pro and not the Max, even though I'd loved to get the top camera version of this lineup.

It does not. I guess you're right. If I remember well, I had the same impression when I got my iPhone X and compared it to my 3-year-old 6S Plus.

One of mine motivations for upgrading from my old 7 Plus was the size, and while the 12 Pro without a case is slim, it's still quite heavy and the apple silicone case makes it a bit chunky. Think I'm going to buy a 12 Mini to compare (Why can't apple have all their models in stores a week before launch so we wouldn't have to order and return in order to get the right one :(). If the screen on the 12 Mini is too small I think I'm just going with just a skin on the 12 Pro.

Its very true that its individual! Its great that we have all kinds of options now, everyone can find their fit:)

I was just really amazed. Sitting here with my 12 pro, the 8 and my 5s. Thought I was gonna love having a bigger screen to view content on, as I take alot of pictures and add them to notes (for inspiration) during the day.

There really, really isnt much difference between the 2x lens and the 1x lens. When zooming the 1x lens to 1.8 for instance and taking a picture, its not very far from what you get with the 2x lens. Yeah its sharper, but boy the difference isnt large.

The LIDAR? Im going to use it alot. So that is really the only reason to pick the pro, imo.

Not trying to be a party pooper here at all, just sharing my current observations.

Anyone else feel the 12 pro is too heavy? I’m coming from an X. Almost feels uncomfortable in one hand, with the silicon case, or without it.

May look at the regular 12 today and decide if it’s worth it to switch. I know there would be a few downgrades but I’m not sure it would be noticeable.

Very nice review, and as others have said, what a beautiful cat and such well-taken pictures, too! Based on your description, I take it you literally turned on the camera and pushed the shutter button. Or did you apply any settings (Night Mode, exposure modification, etc.) before taking them?

I also received my iPhone 12 Pro 256Gb Pacific Blue yesterday, and I mostly agree with your sentiments. It’s a stunning color. I had the 11 Pro Midnight Green and grew a bit weary of it over time - it began to look “dingy“ to me at points. This color does not give me that sense, and only time will tell if the same thing happens here. But I’m not anticipating that. The OP is right about the handling and feel. I remember thinking the iPhone 5 felt a little uncomfortable to hold as a result of the flat sides, but this phone is a pure pleasure to manipulate. And superficially speaking, I LOVE that the design language is now more unified with the iPad Pro!

Time will tell as far as performance goes. I can’t make any big assumptions yet because I think the phone is probably still setting up stuff / indexing in the background, and like every new iPhone I get, it’s a bit more sluggish in the first couple days. That always goes away in a day or two, and at that point, my experience is that there is a significant speed jump.

My biggest frustrations this year may have nothing to do with the phone. First, I always set up my iPhones as “new” and for the life of me, I can not understand why every time I do, certain apps like Apple’s Notes do not update themselves in the background. The only way I can get my notes to populate is by keeping the Notes app open, and the moment the phone goes into Standby mode or I change to another app, it stops updating. I’ve checked every relevant setting and they all appear to be correctly set. This is only a problem when bringing in the notes the first time; after they finally do all show up, it seems to push updates as expected (if I create a new note on my iPad, it is immediately synced to the iPhone, etc.). It’s bizarre to me that this seems to happen every year/every new iPhone, and I have to assume it has something to do with the fact that millions of people are simultaneously hitting Apple’s iCloud servers, and it’s causing an intended or unintended limitation on automatic “push” of data to individual users. The frustration is that it takes a day or two to get all the notes and requires me to constantly initiate it by opening the Notes app. A first-world problem, for sure, and it’s not the end of the world (just frustrating, is all).

Second, I have had a very mixed experience with this year’s crop of accessories. So far, the MagSafe charger is just abysmal for me. Using an Anker 30W per port USB-C Power Delivery charger, it charges so slowly that I have to believe there is something wrong with it. I would estimate about a one percentage-point increase every 10-15 minutes. It also seems to generate an inordinate amount of heat. I’ll give it a few more days to see if Apple provides more news about what’s going on here, but if nothing changes, the two I purchased will be going back.

I also disliked Apple’s clear case; I found it very hard to attach and detach from the iPhone and immediately began worrying about scratches while doing so (I tend to use the iPhone caseless, but always buy one case for times when I want a little extra protection).

The Apple silicone cases, on the other hand, seem really nice this year. They are easy to take on/off, feel really nice in the hand, have responsive and tactile buttons, and come in attractive colors. I bought the Product (RED), Kumquat, and Plum with the intention of keeping the Kumquat (or the clear one) and probably returning the others. However, the Plum is just gorgeous and it’s the one I’ll probably keep. And that’s with me having an inherent bias towards Kumquat because orange is my favorite color. All of them are great; but in the case of the Kumquat color, I couldn’t remove the image of “Circus Peanuts” (Google it if you don’t know what these are) from my head when this case was on my phone! :p

I don’t think I have the photographic skills of the OP, but here are a few pictures of our little guy, taken with the 12 Pro. I made no edits at all; I snapped the photos and uploaded them here. The first two are “Photo” mode; the third was shot in “Portrait” mode.

I’m also including a shot of the Graphite 12 Pro and Pacific Blue 12 Pro side-by-side. I couldn’t decide which one I would like, so I purchased both. Both are beautiful, and I struggled with the decision. The Graphite is gorgeous and is a perfect aesthetic match for my Graphite Series 6 and would have fulfilled my neurotic tendency to match stuff, but in the end, I couldn’t pass up the beauty of the blue.

All in all, I’m excited about this year’s iPhone, but am extremely disappointed in the MagSafe charger. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is a correctable issue, however.

It’s only .5 oz of a difference between X and 12 Pro. Maybe the new dimensions are adding to the way you’re feeling?

Ok so a few things to unpack. I’m coming from an iPhone 7 and have bought an iPhone 12 pro 256gb graphite.
1. The design is incredible. So beautifully made and the colour is nicer than I could have imagined.
2. it’s super snappy. Not just because it’s new but it’s really quick.
3. The 5G is quick. Like whoa!
4. I thought I’d hate the size but because it’s a bit narrower it’s actually very bearable.
5. it’s a well weighted, balanced weight for the size, so it doesn’t feel as heavy as it is.
6. The camera should be number one. I took a photo outside of my house last NIGHT and the photo had detail almost like day time. It was incredible.
7. My battery is so much nicer than the iPhone 7.
HOWEVER !!!!!!
I’m returning mine ASAP.
my screen is dimmer than my wife’s iPhone X. It’s also yellowish.
I went to the Apple store just now, I asked they put it next to another one and wow mine is definitely yellow. At first the lady thought it was my settings so tried all this stuff (True Tone, brightness etc).. she even asked if I had put a screen protector on!

So swapping mine ASAP. They didn’t have stock and to be honest it’s a pain in the back side having to come back out.
yeah mine started out yellow and seemed like after a few hours that went away for some reason... i have a 11 Pro and this is much whiter/cooler... more like iphone 11

Maybe. The new MagSafe silicone cases are an ounce heavier than the X ones, too. So a 1.5 oz difference. I didn’t notice the weight difference at first but using it in bed, using it around the house, I’ve now noticed it.

WOW NICE! questions, why do you set up your phone as new? how to you get pics over?
Thanks! I set up my phone as new for two reasons. First and foremost, I use the acquisition of each new iPhone as a chance to do some “Spring cleaning” on the apps in my phone. So, rather than port them all in, I take a hard look at them and only bring in those I know I’ll use or need. It’s just something I like to do. Second, I have a memory of some people introducing little bugs and glitches into their new phone and there was speculation that it was a result of restoring a previous phone’s setup into a new phone. I don’t hear much about this anymore but a couple years ago, it seemed to cause problems for some. I actually like going through the whole process each year and it’s enjoyable for me to annually revisit the options for the settings, etc. So, I just figured I’d stick with setting it up as new.

If you are asking how to import pics into these posts, I am writing this on an iPad and can just click the icon for “Insert Image” and follow the prompts. Sorry if I misunderstood your question!

Liking the 12 Pro so far but a couple of things bother me.

This thing gets warm. My XR never felt this warm when holding it.

Battery life is disappointing. I woke up at 8 AM after letting it fully charge all night. It’s a little before 12 PM and it’s already at 37%. And to be honest I haven’t really even used it much today.
