What Apple will likely do, in the case of a ProMotion display iPhone isn’t going to be about the 120Hz refresh rate alone, but the variability in refresh rate that will be adjusted automatically when and where it is needed, just like on the iPad Pros. And perhaps they’ll offer it with the 1Hz slow refresh rate for always-on display use, just like on the 5th gen Watches. Combined, it will be something other manufacturers don’t have.

That 1Hz feature already exists, several phones on the market have it. It'll end up like Night Mode. When it comes, Apple will celebrate while other phones are taking photos of the Milky Way.

Another boring iPhone update. It would have been one of the main reasons to switch from the iPhone 11 Pro to iPhone 12. Will wait a few months to pick it up a lot cheaper.

Have you tried scrolling on a 120hz phone before? It's such a difference. Every tech reviewer even mentions it in their reviews where phones have 90+hz screens. Mid-range Android ones have 90+hz these days, as well.
Have you? Because there's not much of a difference. I own an iPad pro with promotion display and I don't notice much of a difference between scrolling on my ipad and my phone. The only place where I really notice that the ipad has a higher refresh rate is by how smooth and how fast my apple pencil drawings appear on the screen but that's probably the only use case where I can really notice it.

I'm going to assume you're mainly watching youtubers/reviewers such as MKBHD that really don't go in-depth in the use cases and are just showing a slow-motion video of them scrolling through their settings window, ofcourse you're going to notice the extra frames when you slow it down. All I've ever heard them say is "look how fast I can scroll through my settings when I slow this clip down to 25%".

That 1Hz feature already exists, several phones on the market have it. It'll end up like Night Mode. When it comes, Apple will celebrate while other phones are taking photos of the Milky Way.
The only phones that have variable refresh rates are the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the Galaxy Fold 2 (and it only goes down to 10Hz due to screen flickering issues). Samsung can't manufacture enough LTPO displays yet to sell to others, especially not to a huge customer such as Apple.

But whose fault is that othe than Apple's?

As I posted earlier, Galaxy S20+ is 4mm narrower, 4mm taller than a 11 Pro Max; lets call it roughly the same volume of internal space (roughly). 4500mah battery.

11 Pro Max 3969mah now, respectable. But WHY drop it to 3600mah (whatever the exact rumored spec is)???? Whose choice was that?

Clearly Samsung can engineer in high refresh and a big battery all with 5G. And released 6 months ago almost.

So a company worth $2 trillion cant?

i mean look, Ive owned every iPhone since the 3GS (minus one S year, the 4S or 5S didnt upgrade) but a 🐑 is a 🐑 is a 🐑 There is simply no defending it here why Apple is falling behind so badly rehashing the same phones (other than profits, hence the market cap).

I couldnt name 1 regular world person (not a dev/coder) who thinks LIDAR is useful but you have to pay for it. Apple keeps pushing this AR train that simply isnt leaving the station.

5G is arguably useless right now as well; in another 2-3-4 years yes. I get that's a spec they have to include on their sheet though. But for now the 5G isnt worth the per device cost right now if its really $75-125 as reported. Although curious how mid-range phones can include 90-120hz and 5g just fine with a big battery for 1/2-2/3 the price. Clearly Apple is more concerned about profits though, which me the average consumer, couldnt care less about.

One thing you might want to consider, especially when it comes to technologies like lidar or even 5G, is that what Apple does often drives the broader market forward. Last year, every tech pundit was decrying Apple’s decision to stick with 4G and how they were not adding this great new feature because they were behind everyone else. Not sure if you were part of the complainers about 5G, but Apple didn’t add 5G because the cost was too high and the market penetration of 5G service was too low. If they added it last year, consumers would have been unhappy with the battery burning technology and poor service area coverage that 5G has had. Apple doesn’t normally take risks like that, that could have such a negative effect on user experience.

This year, things will be different and once Apple ships several million 5G iPhones, you’ll see and hear all the telcos promoting their fast and ubiquitous 5G service - because they’ve had a year to get their act together.

The adoption of lidar is taking time because it’s not on iPhones, yet. Developers needed to build apps that will utilize it, so they had to add it to the iPad Pro at a point where they could release them without having to wait for the iPhone launch. Adoption will grow exponentially once it’s on iPhones, and I would bet that it will become a tool we use and expect daily.

The 120Hz refresh rate screen doesn’t offer the same kind of noticeable change / improvement / alteration to our everyday use of the iPhone compared to 5G service and lidar. Apple will wait until it’s something they can do better, not just do it because a handful of tech pundits think they should have it because the competition has it.

So why would you even have an opinion? How do you know you're not interested? My wife just got a Samsung S20 5G with 120hz display and she loves it! Much easier on the eyes and makes the display buttery smooth.

Do you need it? Probably not. But the iPhone 12 has so few new features, 1 less is noticable.

“ buttery smooth” lol which YouTubed did you get that expression from anyway? Funny expression since butter a room temperature isn’t that smooth until you use a slice of it. Solid at -9 Celsius.

I have a lot to say about this but I’ll keep it short.

If all these rumors are correct I see absolutely zero reason to upgrade, zero. And anyone using an older phone should just get the cheaper non “pro” model.
At this point in time every mom and pop Android phone manufacturer has at least one model for sale with a high refresh rate screen, oh and better cameras with ridiculously high optical zoom cameras. You’re telling me that the richest company on Earth, with all its supply might can’t figure out how to put a higher refresh rate into its “pro” model phones that cost well over a grand? I don’t buy it, either Apple has flooded the rumor mill with fake leaks or they have some serious issues.
5g and lidar are gimmicks at best, 99% of people won’t even get 5g for years, and when they do then what? They can sit around downloading movies real fast all day? And lidar? Waste of space and engineering, it’s just like the measure app, everyone will use it once to measure their couch and then never use it again.
And for anyone that hasn’t used an iPad Pro, I suggest you do NOT, as you’ll never look at your phone the same way again. And you’ll also wonder why on Earth Apple won’t give that tech to us in their supposed “pro” phones.

Hope they don't delay for such a dubious feature.
I hope they do, if for no one else's sake then at least for their own. Because any major smartphone maker not shipping their flagship phones in 2020 with a 120Hz display is laughable and just embarrassing to say the least.

I've already been heavily considering leaving the precious Apple walled garden lately, but if these phones this year are lackluster and especially if none of them have a truly premium display to offer, well then it's bye-bye Apple for me. This company is not about innovating anymore, they just care about $$$. They've got their teeth sunk so deep into us that they think we won't leave if they slip up a bit, but I absolutely will. I mean damn I've got the Apple Card, two HomePods, TV, AirPods, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, iPhone Pro, Watch, and multiple accessories for almost all of those things, and I STILL might end up leaving. This company just drops the ball too many times now, and so I think it's time to look at better offerings from literally anyone else.

120hz is a deal breaker for me, rocking a standard iphone 8 atm and struggled to find reasons to upgrade to iphone 11 last year.
As a vivid pc gamer 120hz+ gives massive increase in user experience, however, any device thats not 120hz from that revelation will look stuttery and slow, so in a sense its also a damaging experience when revisiting legacy devices.
Personally, i’d rank 120hz as important for the iphone as the retina display once was.

As someone else mentioned earlier in the comments, we will likely only see this feature in the form of a dynamic 120hz display that adapts to a given task, mainly to save battery. As alot of tasks we do on our phones such as reading involves alot of static text / still images we might actually see a net battery improvement if we assume the lowest low of the 120hz dynamic display goes below 60hz to say 24hz or in extreme situations even 1hz.

I personally have a hard time imagining apple not releasing atleast one model with this feature this year, they cant fall behind the other competitors..

If it comes as 60/120 on this year’s iPhones I will toggle it on for a few days just to experience it and ultimately toggle it off because battery life is super important to me.
Yea on weekdays I would toggle it on because I have CarPlay, and don't use it much at work. Now I would possibly toggle it off if we went somewhere for the weekend.

This. So much this. Just posted a separate comment saying much of the same thing. Apple these days is just gimmicks and cult following lock-in, no innovation anymore.

It's very likely that it will either have a 120hz display or not. So glad we got this "news" ;)

Multiple ex-Apple employees have said iPhone's designs are locked in years before manufacturing. I'm calling BS, even in Tim Cook's Apple era.

Job and Ross are just covering their ass.

“oh it might or might not have it”

The problem with this is, they can say they were right either way, why is this even a news story.

And Apple would already in production by now. There no way they’ve waited this long to get assembly parts.

Super agree, I don't think 120hz is worth delaying the device, I had a S20 and its a nice feature but its not something i can't live without. You get used to it rather quickly and forget its even there tbh.

To me you’ve gotta admit Apple are years behind the other brands with their software with their phones it’s all about profits why do you think they’re worth over $2 trillion now because all the Apple fan people just keep buying their crappy products year after year because I’ve gotta have the latest the phone. It needs no notch If the others can do it why can’t apple plus 120 Hz refresh rate Longer battery life charging on the back of the phone far better cameras come on it’s been 12 megapixel for the last five years plus 5G as we have great coverage in Australia Longer battery life we wouldn’t have this situation if it wasn’t for Steve passing away if you knew what was happening he turn over in his grave Tims all about money and shareholders. He doesn’t really care about the product cares about the profit that’s why we’re losing earphones and charges you getting less than paying more people continue did buy them because we’re all sheep.

Apple will still sell a lot of 12 Pro's just because it's 5G capable. Probably better for them to stagger the 120 hz display for 2021 if they want to sell more iPhone's year over year, since the 5G iPhone will be all the talk.

Another boring iPhone update.

It never ceases to amaze me somebody has to post this drivel every single year about a new iPhone launching within weeks. So if this update doesn’t appeal to you, therefore it makes a boring for the entire demographic. Technology is at a market saturation point, but you can’t expect smart phones to bring ‘groundbreaking features‘ every year, typically it’s the camera and display technology that changes, but was boring to you, wouldn’t necessarily apply to everybody depending on which model they upgrade from.

If it has taken apple this long to use 120hz I think it might be better to wait until 2021, yes? Early adopters always pay a price.

Yes

Like with any feature soon as apple release it peoplr will love it and downplay it until it does...thats the apple fan way
I don’t disagree, I just always thought 120 displays were needed on displays that were much larger. Smaller didn’t have a real noticeable impact.

Having been someone that went 3G, 4, 5, 6Plus, 7Plus, X the fact is that i'll stick with my X for another year (with a battery replacement) if there is no ProMotion on the 12 Pro. I can't imagine i'm the only one waiting for a significant feature like this.

Everyone that thinks it is just about the 120Hz is missing the battery benefits of it being able to scale the other way when displaying lower framerate content.
