12 pm released 2 months ago. Regardless of whether this is software or hardware i very much doubt it’s gonna be fixed this far down the line...

I didn’t read all 27 pages of this thread, but I wanted to add my own findings.

My 12PM seems to flicker between 3 different stages of black. I took a screenshot of the pure black background.

the first “stage” is a subtle, dark gray when I first select the image in Photos. After a second or two, the image then flickers and I get pure black. However, this only happens when I have the top and bottom “info bars” present. If I tap the photo to go make the info bars disappear, the display then flickers again to a VERY noticeable light gray.

If I lower the brightness however, the full screen image then becomes a weird gradient. It starts with a subtle dark gray at the bottom of the screen, and gradually fades up into a pure black. Again, this is with the stock black background.

Definitely makes me think it’s at least partially software based.

Same happens to my PM.
Might try without auto brightness, see if that makes any difference

They should fix it as they have acknowledged that it is an issue and are denying hardware repairs as of now and are asking to wait for a firmware update.

Most likely a dodgy driver then?
Hopefully. But the issue seems to manifest in a variety of forms at least according to Apple support and service People. Like They claim even my uneven colors on screen is also from the same issue and will be fixed. Let’s see.

You all be scaring me…

I'm on the fence about the 12PM (currently on an XS Max; and want better cameras).

Any way to make sure one wouldn't get a bad unit here; like is there anything to be guessed by a store getting restocked before/after a certain date, or is this more related to a particular supplier?

I would suggest waiting till apple adresses the screen Issue officially.
Since you are upgrading for better camera I would also like to point out that iPhone 12 PM has horrible hard green dots (lens reflections) showing up on photos with lots of point light sources like city lights You can see some pages regarding this on Apple support forum. There is unfortunately there is no work around for the camera issue as it is due to poor lens design.
Other than this pictures and video are extremely good on the 12 PM.

if You are buying person you can check the serial number on the box to see how latest the stock is. Still there is no guarantee that it won’t have the issue. My guess is it’s due to algorithm apple is using to supply the power to adjust screen brightness. But that doesnt completely explain why each and every device manifests glow In different forms and strengths.

Very helpful.

I'm already annoyed by how there's in certain settings always a green dot that must be positioned just right to have it not ruin the picture.

My first thought is that it's weird that Apple don't magically remove/lessen them considering all the other computational magic they do.

I did get a Pro Max last week with a screen I do not have any issues with, unless I just don't know how to see the issue.

You could give it one try if you wanted and tell yourself, if you don't get a good one, you'll wait another year. Just buy from Apple so you don't get a restocking fee.

I can't speak to the camera issues yet as I'm not much of a photographer.

My thoughts too. Why can’t apple fix it in processing or at least try to reduce it when they aren’t willing to do hardware design changes?

I have observed such reflections on my previous Samsung phones as well but they were never this contrasting and harsh. They probably have coating on lenses that softens this effects and produce a more pleasing image. I hope apple comes up with a fix in the next phone at least considering how they are trying to market these as pro grade devices.

Good for you! If you are happy with it then it’s all good. It’s better not to be actively looking for these issues because once you see it you can’t unsee it. 😅

My gut feeling is a hardware issue. Surely a software issue would’ve been resolved by now but who knows let’s see

Yeah. :) I do believe it's very possible I don't have the issue. I have a OLED television too and love that OLED does true black. I do not seem to be the only person who claims their phone is free of the issue.

I fear that could be the case too. I hope not though. I do wonder, with reports of it across the mini, 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max, it's quite extraordinary. Why would the mini screen share something with the 12 Pro Max screen? Perhaps I don't understand that well enough.

Received my 12 PM replacement today.
Display is perfectly uniform and this whites are near perfect.

Also this has 0 issues with raised blacks.
Tested it in pitch dark room with my previous 12 PM.

Old one has horrible green glow during boot sequence, while new one is completely black, no issues whatsoever.

New one:
SN: G0ND
Production week: 51
Display: G9Q

Old one:
SN: F2LD
Production week: 41
Display: G9N

Also the old one with a supposedly perfect G9N display suffered from horrible image retention.

Very happy with the replacement, this is a keeper.

Just received my replacement. There were no differences between this and the previous one. Same production week (51), same factory.

However, I did notice something. I've tested with three videos, with three different results:

This video gave me pulsating blacks between 25 and 50%, green light between 0 and 25.

This video didn't show anything at any levels, all perfect.

This only shows it at 5% and lower.

Anyone have an explanation? Hardware? Software?
