I’ll wait one more year:

2021:
- smaller notch
- The return of the Touch ID
- better future proof 5G chip
- pencil support
- 120 hertz display

and when the 12 pro MAX comes out in November, it’s only 10 months till iphone 13 ...

I can see half of those things on the 13 Pro, and the other half on the 14 Pro. That will make 3 total years of the same design (as they've been doing), and iPhone 15 will be a new form factor. Foldable? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Like some others, I'm really not happy that you need the Max to get the best camera. It's just so big, but photography is so important. Will order the Max, but might end up returning it for the 12 Pro. Either due to the extreme size, or picture quality difference isn't significant enough.

This is seriously such a bummer. My 10s Max is already so hard to hole while taking pictures. I opted for the 12 pro so I could handle it a little but easier. Why can't Apple give us the best phone with a manageable form factor.

This right here. I used the 6/6s/7 Plus variants for the better camera, and was happy to go to the smaller X/Xs/11 Pro size. Not excited about going back to the extra weight and lack of one-hand operation.

But, the lure of the camera always gets me. My kids are 7 and 9 and I love to take photos and videos of them. It will forever bug me when I look back on the pictures 10 years from now thinking they could have been a tad better, if I end up with a non-Max model.

Well either the bigger size allow them to add more features or Apple wants to nudge more people to the bigger model to balance out their ASP’s

Better camera features on the max is a bummer but I know I'd be annoyed at having to pick up a giant slab of a phone every. single. time.

Not willing to compromise on usability. In a few months, a lot of us will get the next iPhone anyway. First world problems 😆

As I understand it the focal length of the telephoto on the pro is superior to the pro max (lower is better ie 2 vs 2.2 and lets in more light). However, the zoom capabilities of the pro max (2.5x vs 2) is clearly the more important and superior feature.

Edit: three of us have said the same..

Most professional camera lenses have large apertures (small numbers). For example a Nikon 85/1.4 might cost 3 times what Nikon 85/1.8 costs - and pros will pay that to get razor sharpness, with blurred background. In this case, the lenses of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are not the same. With DSLR cameras, usually the apertures get smaller as the focal lengths increase. So a 100 mm / 2.0 is roughly equivalent to a 50 mm / 1.4. So its hard to say which lenses is better for the iPhones. The so-called zoom factor is more an enlargement ratio - since the iPhone does not have a zoom lens - but rather three fixed focal length lenses

Regarding the camera, what is the optical zoom range? For example, I have the XS Max with telephoto which goes up to 2X. Is this the same thing or different? I thought the iPhone 12 Pro can go up close to 4X. Can someone help me understand what this means?

  • 2x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out; 4x optical zoom range

Zoom is calculated by the ratios of focal lengths. The ultra wide is 13 mm (converted to full frame equivalent), the wide lens is 26 mm, and the telephoto is 52 mm on the Pro, and 65 mm on the Pro Max.

Therefore, the full zoom range is 4x on the Pro (52 mm / 13 mm = 4), and 5x on the Pro Max. The "2x zoom in" and "2x zoom out" means that they're comparing the ultawide to the wide (2x out) and the telephoto to the wide (2x in), for the Pro. For the Pro Max, the "2x zoom in" still applies, but the zoom out is actually 2.5x. Hope that helps clarify it.

** Side note ** If you wanted to compare to the human eye, a 43 mm focal length (full frame equivalent) would do it. So the "wide" lens means it's wider than human perception. The telephoto lens options are zoomed in compared to human eyes, and the ultrawide speaks for itself.

It's funny how people mocked the original iPad as being a giant phone, and yet so many people want a giant iPhone now. :D

It's the iPhone 12 mini for me! Perfect device! So looking forward to the one-handed size that I miss after getting the XR.

But I'm surprised they didn't include Face ID *and* Touch ID in the top button on the iPhone 12. That would have been a discussion stopper for those complaining about Face ID + masks.

I’m in the minority, but I love the size of the Pro Max, I wouldn’t mind if it was slightly bigger, but then again I never dealt with a small phone. My 1st phone was the Original Galaxy Note, then I switched to Apple when the iPhone 6 Plus came out. Always stuck with the Plus/Max variant.

I doubt one will see noticable differences between the cameras to be honest. The iPhone 12 line has a 12 MP front camera now and night mode on all the cameras. If you really need the RAW editing capability, get the 12 pro. If you do a lot of video where extra stabilization and slightly reduced noise is paramount, get the Pro Max. If you want an unobtrusive camera to take everywhere, get the mini, a powerbank and a selfie stick.

The sensors themselves are not where the magic is happening nowadays, it's mostly in the processing and Apple has a pretty big lead in that department. Other phones may have far superior optics and sensors but the overall result usually isn't consistently as good overall.

Big lenses, big sensors and OIS require lots of space and weight, it just ain't gonna happen on a small phone. Just pick a phone size that works for you and trust the engineers to get the best out of the tiny hardware. And learn how to use that camera; people I travel with are often pissed that the pictures from my 2016 iPhone SE look better than what they shot on their new flagship phones because they don't even bother with framing or adjusting settings.

Comparing the size of my current iPhone 7 Plus against the 12 Max Pro
  • Screen: 5.5" Retina HD vs 6.7" Super Retina XHD
  • Height: 6.23 inches (158.2 mm) vs 6.33 inches (160.8 mm)
  • Width: Same at 3.07 inches (77.9 mm)
  • Depth: Same at 0.29 inch (7.3 mm)

The 12 Max Pro is every so slightly bigger in height but definitely way more screen real estate. A touch heavier too.
That’s helpful I used to have a 7plus and I didn’t find it too big at all so I’m guessing pro max for me as I want the camera features. The x was the perfect trade off between size and pocket portability so it’s a shame that the 12 pro doesn’t have the same features as the pro max

Was going to wait for the Max but if the better sensor is just on the wide-angle lens then I'll get the 12 Pro.

But after making a Pro Max model out of wood and using for half a day pretending it was a phone and camera, it was clear, for me, I'd be frustrated using it due to its size.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one crazy enough to create mockups before buying :D
(although I'll probably go with the Pro Max)
