I’m glad/sad there’s no Touch ID power button as that alone would incentivise me to upgrade from an 11 Pro.

Sad because I’m a key worker, masks are compulsory, Face ID is a pain, and I’ve reduced my 20 character alphanumeric password to 10 digits. Tut.

Glad because I can hoard the cash for (hopefully) 120hz, Touch ID & 5G when it might be approaching meaningful where I live. I get 80 down/20 up on LTE anyway, and unless I suddenly get heavily into xCloud, couldn’t be less interested in 5G. Especially considering that my LTE connection costs me relative peanuts for 50gb a month 🤷

I shudder to think what the early 5G tariffs will be like 😬

Unfortunately the pandemic hit too late in the iPhone 12's development cycle for Apple to realize the greater need for having touch ID in phones again. Maybe we will get the one under the screen or in the power button like the new iPad air in the iPhone 13's next year but who knows if it will matter that much by then.

I would love one of these so I could stop carrying a wallet around. All I need is my drivers license and 1-2 credit cards on me most of the time. But I won’t glue one of these things to my phone or case. The Apple leather wallet sounded cool, but MagSafe may not be ready for prime time.
Have you considered any of the existing 'wallet' phone cases, either simple shell cases that have slots for 2 or 3 cards at the back or folio ones with a flap that fully enclose the phone? For example: shell-type or folio-type. Or these already too much case for your taste and you prefer a more naked phone?

Yep. Didn’t really expect it, but it’s inclusion on the iPad Air gave me a glimmer of hope.

UPS says the iPhone will be delivered tomorrow Wed 10/21, currently in Anchorage, Ak., anyone else getting the iPhone tomorrow?

exactly! i'm sticking with my XS Max. Pure greed. Save the environment? what a bs excuse.

It can both give them profits and save the environment. It's basically how all carbon taxes work. It's a cash grab for the government, but it also does make people choose more carefully.

Personally, I think its great. I have so many charging bricks and cables that the last two phones I bought still have the bricks, cables and earpods sitting in the original packaging totally untouched.

how many people are going to open the box and realize the cable that comes with it they don't have a usb c charging block? there's gonna be a ton. we have ipad pro's with usb c charging blocks, but guess what, they are behind the dresser so it's not something accessible for me to use with a new iPhone 12. I sell all the blocks that come with my iPhone when I get rid of it, so i don't have a bunch of blocks sitting around. Even so, it doesn't charge to the speed advertised with a little crappy charging block. If they really wanted to "save the environment" they would have made iPhone 12 with usb c, so use with your existing usb c charging blocks that are the new standard. laptops use usb c, ipad pro use usb c, let's make a pro phone with lightning port. makes sense.....again, it's a money grab. how does it save the environment when so many people will purchase the charging block by itself and it ships out to them in a separate box all by itself?

Though carbon taxes don't have to be a cash grab for the government. In Germany, 'carbon' taxes on electricity flow into a fund that directly subsidises solar and wind power (by guaranteeing a minimum price for wind and solar electricity producers). In Switzerland, the proceeds from a carbon tax were distributed back to the population via a discount on their monthly health insurance bill (health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland and thus everybody is included in that).

The iPad Air was because they wanted to go to the body design of the pro's but didn't want to add the expense of the Face ID true depth camera system to it so they had to keep touch ID around somewhere.

What will be interesting to see is if the next iPad Pro refresh includes the new Touch ID Button in addition to Face ID.

There are a few incorrect things across this article. It is not a 15gram difference - its 25. also the 800nits for SDR is only on the pro models, the regular models top out at a little over 600.

Wait they said the screen for the 12 is 800 nits. I thought that was only the 12 pro?

iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 12 pro have the exact same screen. So much reflecting when this reviewer could have picked up last years Procmodel for the exact same viewing experience.
Sure, but last year you had to pay $1000 to get this screen. This year you can get it for $800. Yes, that is $100 more than last year, but still $200 less than the price of the Pro models.

This complaint makes no sense. Either you have a USB-C charging "block" or you don't. Putting a USB-C port on the phone itself wouldn't change who needs to acquire a USB-C charging adapter to charge the iPhone 12.

The phone's connector port doesn't matter. They include a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box that you can use with a USB-C laptop or a separate charging adapter from Apple or any third party manufacturer. So as long as you have or obtain any USB-C charging adapter, they provide everything else you need. And even if you don't have a USB-C adapter, most people already have plenty of USB-A adapters and USB-A Lightning cables that will also work just like they do on the iPhone 11, XS, X, 8, 7, 6s, and so on...

I just don't understand the use of the Magsafe charger. I mean, it still has wires.

The whole point of wireless is to not have wires.

it won't charge at full speed and now you have to bring 2 different cables with you. again, money grab.
What two different cables? I only count one Lightning to USB-A cable in this scenario. And if Apple had included a Lightning to USB-A cable with the iPhone 12, your original complaint about not being able to charge your phone without needing to buy a charging brick would be nullified but thankfully you had a backup complaint (charging speed). End result, no matter what cable Apple had included, you would have found something to complain about.

it makes perfect sense. if you aren't using the current standard, then put a usb c to usb a cable in the box to use with your old school charging block. instead, people who have an iPad and macbook with usb c now have a phone that is still sporting an old school lightning port. on a trip it would be fine, but i'd have to bring the other cable to charge my phone. but at home, my usb c chargers are plugged in behind my night stand. so to use it with my "new" iphone, i'd have to unplug it all the time to switch cables.

as stated, i already have usb c devices. so i'd have to bring my special cable for my iphone just to charge that. if they were "saving the environment" here, they would have made it usb c to use your ipad pro cable and charging block with.

Yeah the Duo Charger will likely be more practical. (if you got an Apple Watch)
Because that one is big enough, that you can lay part of your hand on the charger while picking the phone up. Then it should be possible to remove it one handed.
And even if you have to put your other hand on top of the base of the charger, that is still an easier motion than have to grab the puck.

But again, this has nothing to do with them including a Lightning to USB-A cable instead of a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box. It is also isn't something that got worse compared to last year.

so how will someone without usb c adapters use a new iPhone with a magsafe charger?

This iPhone 8 user is mightily tempted by the 12 Mini. But my 8 is still working flawlessly so it's hard to justify upgrading just to have the latest and greatest.

Wow apple really did release a Covid iPhone . Skipping this one super hard.

New design, new charging system, different size screens, 20% better processor - just to name the obvious stuff and you call this a “covid phone” which was decided upon before covid started... ooooook
