MagSafe is such a personal-taste feature. I personally am thrilled because I have been wanting something like this for a long time. Specifically, a wireless charger that can stick to the back of my phone while I use it. I am a very heavy phone user and usually have my phone connected multiple times a day with the lightning cable. There are some situations that I need the cable NOT coming from the bottom of the phone. Having the ability to feed the cord from any direction is exactly what I was hoping for. And opposite of many of you, I was hoping for a very strong connection so that it is stable and not constantly falling off when I am using it. Overall I am excited that MagSafe is on the new iPhones, but I doubt I would ever trust a wallet or a pop socket with a weak magnet. So a good start, but needs improvement. I look forward to what third-party makers come up with. I especially am hoping for a magnetic wireless charger with a 6+ foot braided cable.

We need to wear mask almost everywhere and Iphone 12 is coming without fingerprint sensor. LOL

I'm happy to see 5G on these iPhones, while I understand the majority of people won't see any benefit right at launch due to coverage limitations, I personally will benefit as I live in a big city, downtown that has excellent 5G coverage.

The iPhone 12 (especially the Mini) are going to do very well. They may not be the latest and greatest compared to the Pros, but they’re more than good enough for a persons cellular needs.

As intriguing as the Mini is, the 6.1” iPhone is also very interesting considering how much lighter it is to the Pro and how feature packed it is especially now that it has an OLED screen.

Seriously, who needs a Pro when the base 12 is so good?

And when Apple is charging $100 more for it.... what's not to love?

Good, now I know I am not getting a MagSafe Wallet. It does sound good on paper, but in real life, apparently not.

And still on the fence on Magsafe. How efficient is it compared to using a wire?

Cable is always faster, but Apple deliberately engineered iPhones (I suspect software is used to throttle it) to not benefit from Fast QI chargers.... something that only really got confirmed with the Mag Safe launch....

Magsafe will give you 15W, almost as fast as the crap 18W charging block.

Wireless charging is great at your desk or on an end table. Plop the device down, get some incremental charge or maintain a charge during your day. I wouldn't run out and pay Apple tax on their proprietary charging accessories, especially when they are freaking throttling your phones from using Fast QI which is also 15W.

Can anyone cite a physical reason other than software throttling that wouldn't allow fast wireless charging on an iPhone?

The MagSafe charger is just silly to me. The whole point of me using wireless charging is that I can just pick up my phone but here I still need to use both hands to get it off the charger. Might as well just plug it in and as a benefit ... charge faster 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Seems silly, but have you ever watched a video or played a game in landscape while charging?

I plan to mount the MagSafe charger on the side of a bookcase (at slightly below eye level), so that I can quickly dock/undock the phone with one hand. I’m glad that the magnets are strong enough to enable that usage.

Ah, yes, the ol' "if you buy a product that does a task, you were completely incapable of doing that task yourself and are possibly dysfunctional" post.

It never ceases to amaze me how dire some people's reactions are to new products. Gotta wonder if there was outcry when toilet paper became commercially viable.

"If you can't figure out standard hand wiping, I worry for your ability to function in our world. You wipe with your hand. That's it, you're done. How finicky is your hand?"
Firstly, Eeewww!
Secondly I can’t wait until the three shells replaces toilet paper.

Old complaint: "Apple is sooo behind... look at all these Android phones with 5G! WTF Apple?!?!"

New complaint: "5G actually kinda sucks... you can't find it anywhere... and it kills battery life..."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
were they under some embargo that they couldnt include a bigger battery? enlighten me please

The reviews seem decent. Excited for all those getting phones Friday or over the weekend and into next week. The 12 pro max is tempting but I am trying to hold out til next year for improvements and 120hz and 5G to be more widely available where I live. But if we get another stimulus check, I will bite the bullet and upgrade early lol.

so how will someone without usb c adapters use a new iPhone with a magsafe charger?
I fit that demographic... One day, I suppose I'll get a USB-C power adapter. Until then, over the years I've put in a few Leviton electrical plugs that include USB-A and USB-C fast charging, so those will work... Frankly annoyed at the small 5W power brick with prior phones and iPods. Too slow to charge, so the faster electrical plugs work wonderfully. Six years ago, I got an Anker power bank, that has both USB-A and C that could be used. And, I think my three year old work laptop has USB-C hub, along with the monitor.

I suppose anyone with an old Android phone or one of those three year old Nintendo Switches the kids use likely has one as well. USB-C is fairly common out there. $15 off Amazon can likely get you a new 20W charger.

Is it a bit of a low blow no 5W power adapter was included? Likely. But Apple has never shipped a fast charging power adapter with a phone, and I'd counter it is a bigger offense shipping slow chargers for years.

The benefit of the wireless charger is, I haven't got to spend $400 a year replacing the seriously crap Apple lightning chargers.

Dang, I'm kinda worried for Apple now. They may not sell many MagSafe chargers because the MacRumors forum members (AKA Apple's Only Customers) hate it and/or losing interest in it.

I like the idea. It looks fun.

But a 3ft cord? And they expect people to use their phone while it's connected?

The only 3ft cord I have is in my travel kit for hotels... and that's only there's power next to the bed on the nightstand.

Otherwise... I use 6ft cords.

Let's see what Anker comes up with... :)

And when people wear masks why would one be using their phone? You think apple changes production based on a virus nobody saw coming?

I get what you're saying and it would be good if the cord was customer replaceable so we could choose our necessary cord length, but to be honest about it the majority of people using their phone while it's charging are generally sitting to their table/desk using their Mac so they can simply plug it into their MacBook/iMac to charge it.

I'd love a MagSafe puck for my couch... tucked between the cushions and easy to grab and slap on the back of my phone.

But I'd need at least a 10ft cord to reach from the wall to my sitting position... :p

how many people are going to open the box and realize the cable that comes with it they don't have a usb c charging block? there's gonna be a ton.

probably. But the question is whether there will be enough for whom that isn’t an issue to make it a worthwhile thing?

I think about places like my work. I manage a little over 800 iOS devices. If tomorrow we decided to refresh every single phone to iPhone 12’s we wouldn’t buy a single brick. Every laptop currently deployed has USB c ports, they all have USB C docks with more USB C ports, and most have USB C monitors with more USB C ports. Some people would complain they can’t charge at home, but these people would also not spend a dime of their own money for their company phone - so in the end they would simply adjust their behaviour and no longer charge at night but instead charge during the 8 hours they’re sitting at a desk.

Its like were comparing this stuff now to a "clean room environment" used by hard rive repair companie .

Its getting worry-some.

I don't know about an iPhone, but when I put my Galaxy on a Qi charger, I get a visual notification as well as an audible sound to confirm the phone is charging, to that point I have never found my phone uncharged?
This has nothing to do with iPhone or Android. It is a common little flaw in Qi charging
If you don't align the two coils on top of each other, your device won't charge correctly.

iPhone users may complain about it more because we want our device to be perfect. This is why Apple first attempted to solve it with AirPower (place it anywhere and it’ll charge) then realized the solution is too complicated. Now they’re going the opposite direction by forcing the phone and the charger to align.

Essentially this kills AirPower for good.

Sure, but last year you had to pay $1000 to get this screen. This year you can get it for $800. Yes, that is $100 more than last year, but still $200 less than the price of the Pro models.
Fair enough. I’m just mad apple hyped up the screen and then I see the specs are the same to last year

I feel like people are overly excited about the Magsafe charging , partly because the magnet power cable was so beautifully functional for the OLD mac laptops. Note: They got rid of it..

Anyhow, The design of this needs to be much smaller, and not be intrusive, at all... to normal usage of the phone (No more than having a 6 foot USB lightening charger in it for example.

Thing is the magsafe is massive, and goes right in the middle back where you a gripping/holding the phone. Plus there is a power cord for this charging that is oddly coming off the right side of the phone. Maybe it's not in the way.. maybe it is.. I imagine it's not an awesome feature but surely they pushed it that direction based on feel.

I feel the Magsafe option will shine in kind of permanent mounts, primarily in your vehicle (but can be on a work desk, etc) where it gives some convenience to just drop the phone back down on (without having to align) on the base/pad whatever it is that pulls the phone to proper alignment (ideally). Then you just yank the phone off when you leave. Saving the countless split seconds you use when plugging in a lightning cable to the bottom of the phone.
(Something I think a lot of people are going to end up using more often than the giant magsafe).

Further, apple doesn't include the wall wart plug. They say for 'environmental reasons'. My arse, .. this was to save X amount of money and encourage people to actually buy the things. I do not think an adaptor plug in should be an aftermarket only item. Especially for a $700-$1200 device.

That said, I'll try it out.. and I'm stuck on what to buy first this year case wise etc. Do I get a magsafe apple case? Aftermarket ? What about Pop sockets? (I, as many, are so used to these things it is nearly a must to have them). I know the plan is to allow third party case designers to create pop sockets that utilize the magsafe to attach, and thus preserving magsafe functionality. Will this be a case of removing your pop socket for every magsafe use? If so, that's a deal killer as it ruins any effect a magnet attaching to charge your phone has. If you must remove the pop socket magnetically and then place it somewhere (a new problem) then why not just keep your pop socket(s) on the phone and plug in the USB charger?

This is all just off the top of my head,.. I think I'll end up with a phone that I charge like the one I have (USB lightning) and have a permanent popsocket on it (like now). The only way I can see a pop socket working with magsafe is if it's designed in a way where the magsafe attaches onto the pop socket or somehow around it (doubtful). The former is possible certainly.

I suppose I will grab some lightweight case for now.. and wait on the aftermarket to get their designs and redesigns/improvements done before I go down the multiple accessory route needed for pure charging on the iphone 12.

I sound like I'm not happy with the phone. I'm happy of the function coming just not some things they could have done, imo, so much better (Magsafe primarily). I feel if it doesn't get dropped within a 12-24 month period.. Apple will eventually get the magnetic charging right via trial/error user complaint (on the iPhone 13 , 14 or maybe 15 model).

Honestly, I'd prefer to have seen a magnetic attachment of the lightening connector at bottom over the magsafe back massive magnet ordeal they have now. A Magnetic , just put it in the general area of bottom of phone and it is magnetically pulled into place seems like an easier transition for iphone users with the technology and eliminates the aforementioned problems that will creep into play.

The 12's screen is only 625 nits and NOT 800, just checked on the site. Is that enough for outdoors visibility?
