The Mini isn’t mini. It’s still too big. The original SE was small, inexpensive and powerful. The new mini is neither small nor inexpensive. The new SE isn’t either.

There is no iPhone that meets the criteria of what the original SE was.

Also, having the buttons opposite of each other like that is awful imho.
You can't believe how many screenshots I have in my camera roll just from trying to turn the screen off or change the volume!

A 6S user here hoping the 13 mini does comes to fruition.

Looking from my perspective, compared to the 6S the 12 mini has a bigger screen in a smaller device with vastly superior 'real-world' battery performance. I was ready to buy the 12 mini but it's lack of TouchID was enough not to. I'm holding out for TouchID & FaceID in a 13 mini. Hopefully a Win/Win/Win/Win for me.

I went to a store in between lockdowns to compare the 12 vs 12 mini and the mini was the perfect size for me to touch anywhere on the screen with one hand. I have pretty big hands and the 12 was a bit too much of a stretch. I don't want to carry around a huge device in my pocket.

How about coming out with an iPhone Pro Mini? Maybe that would prove there is a market for smaller phones.

Also, how about having a battery capacity equivalent to at least the XR?

Good news if true. Love mine but I challenge Apple to do a ‘Pro’ version with the same cameras, storage and battery life as the top models. Make it slightly thicker if you need to.

The theory goes that with people staying at home a lot more during lockdown, smartphone users are consuming more content on their device and therefore want bigger screens to enjoy it. A consequence is that users don't have as much opportunity to appreciate the convenience of having a smaller phone in their pocket while out and about.
lol we’re making up conspiracy theories now?

It's true! We all still live our lives. I still get dressed every day because otherwise, I woulnd't be dressed... so my iPhone still goes in my pocket because that's where it goes.
Do people who regularly don't leave the house not carry their phone in their pocket and just leave it somewhere around the house somewhere?

I can see some instances where you may have previously been concerned about phone size non-pandemic that you've forgotten about. Like dress pants, dresses, small purses, packing for a trip, being at an amusement park, wrangling kids etc.
But overall, I'm assuming people still do the main things they used to do with their phone: get dressed, put phone in purse, bag or pocket etc.

Only thing stopping me from getting a Mini is the lack of TouchID. Loved it on my OG SE, and love it on my iPhone 8 that I just recently got (which is still quite a beast even on iOS 14).

Fingers crossed the 13 Mini will have some form of TouchID!

I'm one of the people that would buy the 12 mini but am still holding on to my original SE. A major part of it is that with COVID and masks I prefer to stay with my touchID phone. Also since I am still happy with my current phone, why spend money? By the time the iPhone 13 comes out there is a good chance that it will finally be time to change and hopefully there will be a 13 mini.

Of course they’ll make another mini, most of the parts are already there for another gen. They’ll add the usual upgrades and give it another go. However, if it continues to struggle sales wise then I expect it will be dropped in 2022 when the all new design is unveiled and that will be that.

Interesting article, one thing to mention is that I guess that the mini 13 is already in advanced stages of development, so maybe makes no sense to cancel it at this point. I don’t think that Apple is loosing money with the mini and I do think that there is still market for small devices and 5% is quite a bit in translation to numbers. I think that 13 mini will sell better this year. Still plenty of 4,7 devices out there!

There can be a number of reasons why the iPhone 12 mini isn’t selling like some would think. I myself have been asking for a smaller iPhone, but I haven’t purchased one yet and probably never will. Why? Simply because I don’t need a new phone. I don’t go out much since the start of the lockdowns so the need for a new mobile device isn’t there. When I’m at home, using a phone (mini, standard or max size) isn’t the best option. Even the max is too small for use while on the couch when I could use a iPad or MacBook.

Personally, I hope they keep making the mini. Why not? Why are the max users so against Apple making a device in multiple sizes? There was a time when you buy the PowerBook in three screen sizes (13’, 15’ and 17’). The people who bought the 17’ didn’t look down on the people of bought the 13’. No one cared what size you had just as long as you loved it. Why does everything have to be “my way”? Can’t we have options?

From a marketing standpoint, I don’t think using “mini” in the name was the best idea. Yes it tells the story that Apple has made a smaller phone, but to the uninformed (which is probably 75-85% of iPhone buyers) they feel it’s missing features or can’t do what the standard size phone can. Personally, I feel Apple should just drop the mini and max names. Just call them iPhone and you can select the size you want. They have done that for their computers for years. Why not for iPhones?

Fair point. It did for me too, but only on some days during the first week or so. After that, all headaches/eyestrain somehow completely went away.
I hope that’s true for you, but the more likely scenario is that you have just become accustomed to that feeling and it’s now the norm for you.

Was going to order the Pro because I couldn't get to a shop to see the line up in real life.

I eventually made it to a department store, upon seeing all 4 devices together - Pro Max / Pro / 12 / Mini, I just had to buy the mini.

I think it's not selling well as people are not a) seeing it in stores b) seeing friends with it as no socialising at the moment.
Ooh those are good points. A lot of people aren’t going to know they want the mini until they hold it. Also not sure it’s being marketed as heavily as the other models.

The question is why are people buying a mini phone? Is it for the size or is it because it’s cheaper than the larger phones? If it’s the former than the XR and 11 won’t factor into the sales too much. The SE would have impacted on the sales as that is a smaller phone too.

The pandemic excuse can go both ways. Yes maybe people were staying in more so didn’t need a portable device so went for larger phones. However many people buy larger phones because they don’t want to carry around a tablet/laptop and a phone. However being at home means you have access to your other devices like tablets and computers and therefore could get a smaller phone.
I don't know about others here but, I bought my mini so I would be the popular kid of the forum with a mini that everyone would envy and secretly dream about owning. :D

Although the reasons may be legit, it seems like mini fans will look for every reason other than people just aren't into small phones anymore. I mean its ok to like the mini and admit this.
That’s because it’s a given. No one thinks small phones should be more popular than big phones. We’re only trying to look past the obvious, to see if there’s more to the picture. It’s very possible there are multiple factors at play.

If the new mini had Face ID and Touch ID ability, it would be a day one purchase for me. Then I would have 2 minis. :D

I think it makes sense that the Mini will continue for at least one more year. Apple has already spend the money for R&D so I see no reason of dropping it from their lineup. They can simply reduce their production for it and everything will be ok.

Having said that, I'm guessing that it will have even less features compared to its bigger brothers this time round as Apple will try to make it even more affordable and possibly cheaper to attract a bigger audience.

P.s. Love my Mini ! It’s everything I wanted since the iPhone 5s !

Maybe you are right and most people don't want small phone. Or maybe people just don't know what they want and there hasn't been enough time to see the impact of releasing a smaller phone? Remember before the first iPhone? At that time all people wanted were flip phones with color screens. Even after the first iPhone was released, it still didn't really take off until the second (3G) version was released.

If you are not in a 5G area most of the time, or need the slight cellular speed increase- Just set the phone like I did to LTE only, and the battery life IS great!
Thanks for the tip. As far as I know, “5G auto” is default enabled, which means the phone is not in 5G unless a 5G signal is available. I would think that “5G auto” and “LTE only” would therefore have the same result on battery life in areas where there’s no 5G, unless “LTE only” only prevents pinging for 5G when the battery gets low.

Just put Touch ID on the side button and I''m in.
I'd buy the s**t out of a 4.5 screen, but I know it's not gonna happen because you people are somehow in love with phablets.

This actually makes sense, assuming the SE and the XR are dropped, the new range will look something like this:
12S Pro Max. $1,099
12S Pro $999
12S $799
12S Mini $699
12 $699
12 Mini $599
11 $499
that looks like a terrible ******** of a lineup... so that's probably gonna be the case ahah

I was going for the mini but then I saw the reviews about the battery and it was scary, even my normal 12 doesn’t have a nice battery life!
