Too complicated of a lineup (Apple has been struggling with this problem for a while now). How about this:

12S Pro Max $1,099
12S Pro $999
12S $799
12S Mini $599
11 $499 (even keeping the 11 around is questionable, though, migh put the 12 here)
Still too complicated. Just go with iPhone and iPhone Pro - both available in two sizes. Scrap “mini” and “max”.

mini is an apropos description of the phone compared to the other models. There is nothing childish about the description. Consider not projecting the wrong definition and use of the word, and the name will no longer appear childish.
I still think it‘s a childish name. I would be embarrassed to tell anyone I owned an iPhone mini.

I’d have to agree. I know the SE cannibalized some Mini sales.

Also, despite the performance, the price and battery life kills it.
Honestly, the battery life is fine on the 12 Mini. I start using it at 7am and eventually charge it for a few mins around 7-8pm, if I intend to use it until midnight. If I plan ahead, I just plug it into my car at some point during the commute and never think twice about it.

I think some Apple execs intentionally staggered its launch well after the Pro launch, so that they could sell more expensive phones to the impulsive annual audience. I didn't want to wait either, and almost bought a 12 Pro, but then held an iPod Touch, and remembered how nice it is to free up my other hand to push my baby's stroller (I wanted to say broadsword or machete, but caved)

Even when they sell less Minis than their other phones, offering it helps keep niche people like me from jumping ecosystems. It's not like 12 Mini users buy less content, or use less services.

Yes, release a phone they didn't want to succeed... Who would've guessed that?

it starts to look like what we always made fun of, the lack of focus present in samsung or whatever.
The days with 1 product only were the best, the quality was vastly better.
You should looks at Samsung’s lineup. It’s what, three times larger. Maybe more? It’s also the same number of phones as Apple offers now.

You’re also misapplying the sentiment meant by the statement. It was said in relation to Apple making extraneous products like printers. Not that they had too many of their core product on offer. Apple offers more Mac products than they do iPhones even though the latter has a user base many times larger than that of the former.

And I’ll put the quality of my 12 mini up against that of my first iPhone, a 3GS, any day of the week.

Both my parents and Aunt who all had the iPhone 5s style SE all upgraded to new 2020 SE rather than the iPhone Mini because of the price. They prefer the smaller iPhone, and wanted the 12 Mini but would not pay iPhone mini prices. I upgraded my 8 to a 12 Mini as I prefer smaller phones, but I am willing to pay the iPhone 12 Mini price, though I think it is too expensive.
This is true for my spouse and I. We prefer smaller phones and absolutely don’t need bells and whistles. I replaced his 2017 SE with the 2020 SE strictly due to size and price. I kept my 2017 SE and put a new battery in it. My son went from a 2016 SE to a used 8+ and I am eyeballing the 12 for him. For some reason his LTE drops out where my SE does not and we are on the same OS and same Verizon plan.

2020 was an odd year. I can see Apple giving the mini another chance. If the next one doesn't sell well I could see it getting canceled then.

Drop mini price to $500, put in microLED screen, and add in a fingerprint scanner (under screen or on power button or the back). If the 13 looks like that I would buy it.

For me personally I wanted a 12Mini. I have always liked the form factor and design since the iphone 4.

The Pinch point was the price. £700! No way. We all know Apple is a premium brand but thats starting price it is too much. Before launch my limit was £499, and I suspect many others are in this position.
This is the real reason (I was in the same position)...It is just not good value, well in my eyes as a potential buyer. Plus, I‘m not a fan of the notch, but would have tolerated it, but on this size of phone it is much more intrusive on the smaller screen.

Think about it this way: If you consider Apple's iPhone business to be about $140B per year, 5% of that is $7B per year.

I know they wouldn't lose all that revenue if they discontinued that model, but they would lose a major chunk $7,000,000,000.

In other words, Apple sold more iPhone 12 minis than the entire number of Macs (every model in the lineup) it sold.

How lacklustre! Apple must really regret the profits it’s making from this product. Meanwhile, they’re still bothering to make the HomePod and the Apple TV.

Not sure why you wear pants with 2" pockets, but 6.2 inch phones can fit perfectly fine in regular jeans.
I wear normal Wrangler jeans and my 5.67”-tall (plus a slim bumper) iPhone 11 Pro peeks out the top of my back pocket. I don’t like that.

Fortunately CEOs know better than to compare figures between a top-selling product line and a relatively low-selling product line when making these kinds of decisions. But it is an interesting comparison.

Of course Apple is doing to make a 13 Mini as it's just a refresh year so the 13 Mini will just be the 12 Mini with an updated motherboard (A15 chip and modem), some camera upgrades and new colors. If it continues to lag in sales though it will probably be the last time Apple makes an iPhone that size (I can see them bringing back 5.8" down the road though).

Seeing as you're not supposed to put your phone in your back pocket, I guess that's not a relevant point. Who does that?

A 13 mini is literally the exact opposite of the phone I want. I currently have an XR and 7+ in my family and between the two the 7+ is by far the better phone. The shorter aspect ratio on the 7 is better, the no notch is better, the home button and touchID are better. I regret trading in my 6S+ for the XR. I'd buy 2 SE plus phones on launch day, but based on the current lineup I'll be keeping these two phones for a long time to come. And the 7+ is falling apart, wired headphones no longer work (I've tried multiple adaptors which all work on the XR), and the ear piece no longer works. But even in that state it's still not worth trading it for any of the current models.

I’m just basking in the schadenfreude of those who were so sure the public wanted a small phone format, that phones had gotten too big and the small form factor would take off like a rocket to dominate the market once gain. Not.
In fairness though, the same people that were saying that, I think wanted to see a 4” iPhone form factor, similar to what the iPhone SE was, not the new ‘mini size’ iPhone.

Yes, larger display phones have been dominant for obvious reasons, but I don’t think Apple ever expected the iPhone mini to be ‘wildly popular’ when it’s self-explanatory why larger phones are more popular.

Did an iPhone mini kill someone’s puppy at MacRumors?! The continual drumbeat of negative coverage based on pure speculation is astounding. Someone REALLY has it in for the iPhone mini and it shows.

I constantly seem to read and watch is negative stories about the mini. It's almost as if some non-Mini buyers need to put it down, like the Mini's existence threatens phablet sized phones.

If it's not slated battery life tests claiming the battery sucks by comparing against the only iPhones it loses out to (and not the SE 1/2, X, XS, etc that many are upgrading from); then it's unverifiable sales claims.

The iPhone SE had the same issues when it came out, e.g. "it's an iPhone 5, who would pay for that, etc", "too expensive"", etc. I am sure you can remember the negativity on the keynote -- turned out it was a good phone.

I'll probably buy the 13 Mini. I guess I need to show Apple that people do want this device by buying another Mini... still I think by then 5G will be better available and the modem should be improved (in Japan it's pretty rare and my carrier doesn't even offer it!). Maybe I'll actually turn on 5G this time!

Apple will probably continue making the Mini until the next redesign, since they've spent the time/money on the design and production line. So hopefully, we'll have a. Mini 14 too...
