What if the iPhone 13 mini had huge sales? Will Apple reconsider that model for the 14?
I would suspect that Apple have already made their plans for the 14. It does seem like the 13 does look like a planned refresh of the 12 and we won’t see significant changes to the external designs but at least they have planned to have a mini model with the 12 and 13.

Perhaps they see the 12mini as the unfortunate victim of a pandemic that saw people not needing to go out and about as much and therefore gravitating towards the standard or larger sizes, especially if they had some sort of bonus money payment like the various European furlough schemes (or something like the one off payments that Americans got).

I would have been nice to see the mini be thicker to accommodate battery life on par with the standard 12 but then Apple would have eliminated one of the things that upgrades people to the bigger model.

And I doubt Apple would be overly disappointed if the sales of the standard 12 exceeded expectations because the mini certainly would have made case for upselling to the standard 12 - mission accomplished then?

If the 13 mini may be the last one in the line, anyone who sees this rumour and really wanted to try that form factor can bear that in mind. I personally would like to see if the 12 mini stays in the lineup and becomes one of the cheaper phones when the Xr and the 11 make their way down range. It would certainly allow Apple to see if the 12mini phone at a lower price range would appeal - remember the SE2020 sells like hot cakes.

Its a shame the mini is not as popular as Apple hoped, I don't think it launched at a great time in the middle of a pandemic. Its easy to go for an iPhone 12 if you have already had an 11 or XR as they are the same form factor - you know what you are getting size wise, but with internal improvements.

But the Mini - 12 being a new form factor, people like to see it first hand before buying. I've only just been able to go to an Apple store to see one in person last weekend - now I know its the form factor I want - so it will be a mini 12 or 13 for me to replace my standard size iPhone 11.

Poor sales = any other smartphone vendor would love to have a “poorly selling” failure like the Mini.

I think it was still in the global top 10.

It’s all relative, but of course if makes for nice clickbait headlines. One has to scrape something together because the iPhone 12 line has otherwise been a spectacular success.

Yes, not only do the media not get it, the comments are roughly the same. Signal to Noise ratio is just dismal.

Does this mean Pagatron have changed their practices, or is it just that Apple don't really care about anything other than money?

Imo Apple probably doesn’t want the mini to sell well. Apple made the 12 mini as a strategy for people to spend more money on the price increased regular iPhone 12 (compared to iPhone 11 the previous year) without realizing it. So the fact the 12 sells well (which means more margins for Apple) means the mini does its job, and Apple doesn’t need much of it. I bet Apple will continue selling the mini until the margin for the regular iPhone is acceptable at $699. Once that happens, we can see the mini dropped.

If it turns out that the mini is selling better than the regular iPhone, we will see Apple increasing its base price. Seems like that’s the Apple way (eg. iPad Air selling well, iPad Air 4 price increase. iPhone 11 selling well, iPhone 12 price increase).

Well at least we are getting a 13 mini, despite all the gloomy news about the 12 mini and its sales. I will have a SE2, 12 Mini and 13 mini to use over the next few years as my one handed, light weight and compact iphone until something else comes along (re-introduced 5.8 size or iphone flip). I might even consider the Iphone 14 Pro if it eventually gets Touch ID, and the regular models don't.

The mini is my choice this year - dependent on features.

I only went for the 12 Pro because I'm a whore for new features and the latest technology. Now, obviously Apple can't easily cram all the goodies into a smaller package but if they could get close, this would be a really compelling choice for me. I can handle the decreased battery life.

My mum recently got an iPhone SE and I was really impressed with the overall size and weight. As someone with small hands, I think a mini would be much more useable for me though I do love those sweet, sweet new toys that come with the Pros.

"Would you buy a 5.4" iPhone with a big battery that we can't physically fit into the chassis? We would have to make it super thick and break all Apple design rules."

Precedent exists: camera bump and foolish placement of the crying-to-justify-itself side-button. "Apple design rules" seem to be as disposable as toilet paper to them. I question many things from them since iPhone 6 hardware and iOS 7 software. Much of my "cheerleading" for them has faded since those two, including descendants like the mess of Apple TV and the barely-functional remote, the personality disorder of HomePod, and high-anxiety of HomeKit. Apple had a lot of house cleaning to do to get back to where they were at their peak.

This might have an easy explanation, and it may not even be relevant if the stories about poor sales are true…

But is it possible that Apple didn’t want the mini to sell well and maybe it’s cannibalizing sales of more expensive iPhones? I was paying Apple $55/month for my 11 Pro and now I’m paying almost $20 less for my 12 mini.

I have a hard time believing that they want to cut out the mini due to poor sales. What were they expecting? They have 5 other iPhones with bigger screens to compete with. What defines “poor” sales? I’d imagine they make a lot more off of a $799 iPhone 12 vs a $699 mini — they’re basically the same phone.

im convinced that the mini would have sold a lot better if it were released in a non pandemic year where people could have seen it in person.

two things killed the mini sales:

1) having a budget phone in the lineup (2020 SE)

2) only $100 less than the regular 12

While a lot of people bought the mini because they prefer a smaller phone, a lot of people buy iPhones based on price. It was priced way to close to the regular 12, and anyone looking to save money went with the 2020 SE. I also think it's safe to assume most people are not paying outright for their phones, so you are talking like $3/month to have the 12 over 12 mini.

Mini "fan" here.

I dumped Apple after the 5/5s series when they did the "me too" with subsequent big-ass phones. Tried the 8... not bad but then came more unwieldy devices so once again, bye Apple. I'm now back with the 12 mini; light and fits anywhere. I'll most likely upgrade if there's one more in the works.

Some of you kiddies will never know how we managed to use the original iPhone with a 3.5" display without issue.
