“a "hands-free kit" in order to protect children under 14 years of age from potential electromagnetic radiation.”

And yet French is number #1 in Europe and perhaps the world in utilizing Nuclear Power plant. 80% of their power grids come from nuclear energy. Why don’t they worry about radioactive radiation from that?
I’m genuinely curious to know how you think nuclear power plants work.

I haven’t used the EarPods that came with the iPhone since the 6s….. so like 2016? Lol

This should make the ****** phone Android crowd excited. Not certain if they even buy an iPhone if it was a bloated brick with every port under the sun, a removable battery, and an inconsistent App Store filled with malware.

Good thing a bunch of European bureaucrats are dictating product management to Apple.

Wired is great if you care about audio fidelity like us musicians do. I do have a pair of AirPods when I'm doing physical work around the house.
Get some over ear Sony’s if you want wireless and fidelity. The included wired headphones are not good. Awkward fit, no isolation, bad lows…

I haven't used wired earphone in over 5 years! And never have I ever used that is shipped with the Phone (iPhone or not). So if there are more people like me, then having them in the box is just another e-waste! I strongly believe a choice has to be provided to customer while purchasing. Like a check box or something for "ship with basic earphones".
I like this idea a lot but it’s probably a massive difficulty for the supply chain at the scale Apple ships at.

Love it!
Still use wired EarPods every day

Great super low/no latency and high quality microphone

Love my AirPods, but wired wins for critical communication
I used to love my AirPods too. But in just 2,5 years of a daily use, the battery last long 20min. My old iPhone 6s EarPods still rocking!! I won’t buy a pair of AirPods again, they has the same durability as a taco in my hands…

I presume earpods with lightning connector, one of the most useless products Apple has ever made.

Too bad apple will get rid of ports, making wired headphone with iPhone completely and utterly impossible. Next step would be only connecting to AirPods and AirPods Pro.

As sinister as it is, I really can’t think of any other better outcome.

Europe: Switch to USB-C to reduce electronic waste. Also include wired headphones even if they are unwanted.
This is a French law, not an EU law. All other eu countries do not require headphones to be Sold with the phone. That being said it’s quite obvious that the removal of charger and headphones has absolutely nothing to do with environment and everything to do with increasing profits.

“The company said omitting these accessories helps to reduce carbon emissions and avoids the mining and use of rare-earth elements.”

hahaha.

while the above is true, this is not the primary reason apple removed these. It was a nearly pure cost cutting move.
Exactly!!!

They should have had a system of redeemable codes where if you bought an apple product you could go in store and redeem it and get a free charger/AirPods if you wanted them.

All four iPhone 13 models still ship with EarPods in the box in France due to a law in the country that requires all smartphones to include a "hands-free kit" in order to protect children under 14 years of age from potential electromagnetic radiation.
What the actual f*ck.

So do French iPhones cost €19 more than they do in neighboring EU nations?
10€, which seems reasonable. Bundled stuff always has a lower unit cost. Probably around 5€ for the earpods, and 5€ for the logistics and packaging overhead.

It’s not only about kids , when you spend your day doing phone calls it destroys your brain, even more if you are growing up.

the fact you can’t read a law correctly might confirm the point.

vive la France 😎

Kick them out. I think Apple should stand up to countries that try to impose stupid laws on its goal to be the best American company in the world. These laws are as restrictive to profits as the Korean AppStore ruling

'Kick them out'? What the heck are you on about? Apple should kick the French out of France?

So, Apple is going to become 'the best American company in the world', by refusing to do business in every major economy outside of the US, all of which impose their own laws on Apple and any company doing business in them?

And as a consumer, you value the success of a corporate entity over your personal interests and rights? Go AAPL!!!

🤔

Stand aside Tim, we've found your replacement!

We're expecting the iPhone to go portless in a year or two, right?
I doubt that will happen anytime soon. Wireless charging has to first catch up to wired charging in terms of speed, efficiency, reliability and price for that to happen, which so far isn't the case.

Some countries and their laws - weird. Does anyone use basic wired earphones? It is like choosing to listen to an AM transistor radio when one has access to lossless spatial audio.
