This thing has got some very iPhone 5 Black vibes. All the improvements point to a solid "S" year model. A 12s Pro Max in Black would do me just fine. My wallet is ready.
Despite being months away from launch, we've already seen several rumors regarding the 2021 iPhone. Now, as we inch closer to release nonetheless, new rumors point towards some design changes, new colors, and new features to expect.
According to leaker Max Weinbach (via YouTube channel EverythingApplePro), the iPhone 13 will come with a matte black option for the Pro and Pro Max models, a new stainless steel coating that reduces smudges and fingerprints, a new rear-camera design, and improved noise cancelation with beamforming for phone calls.
Last month, Weinbach reported that Apple plans to include an always-on display for this year's new iPhone as part of its design. He's now building on that rumor, saying that on top of an always-on 120Hz display, Apple is likely to include a matte black option for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Weinbach says the color is a "redesigned graphite" but is "borderline black." According to Weinbach, Apple is also experimenting with an orange, almost bronze-like color for the new iPhones, but he says it's unlikely to launch.
The iPhone 12 lineup brought back the beloved flat-edged design, as well as stainless steel edges for the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. Since the models were launched, users have complained about the ability of the edges to attract smudges and fingerprints, especially for lighter-colored options like Gold. Apple's looking to address the issue with the iPhone 13 by adopting a new anti-smudge and fingerprint coating, according to Weinbach.
Moving to the rear, Weinbach says the new camera module will not be completely flat but that each lens will protrude less from the main body. Additionally, the immediate run-up to the camera module will be smaller, reducing the camera system's thickness entirely.
Alongside a suite of previously rumored features, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max camera system will include a new process for taking portrait photos. Weinbach reports that portrait mode on the new Pro iPhones will rely significantly on LiDAR. LiDAR, currently on the iPhone 12 Pro, Pro Max, and iPad Pro, is used for improved low-light image photography. However, Weinbach says Apple will take it a step further with portrait mode this year.
Weinbach says that within iOS itself, Apple will also include a new iOS "image stabilization correction" mode that will automatically detect and keep a subject in focus during a video. Given this is software-based, it's unknown if special hardware within the 2021 iPhones enables this mode or whether it could silently debut in older iPhone models.
As for the lineup itself, Weinbach says Apple plans to keep the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini form factor in its lineup, despite widespread reporting of the iPhone 12 mini's lackluster sales performance. With the iPhone 13 mini, Apple is looking to improve battery life, a significant point of concern for customers who enjoy the smaller form factor. Weinbach says the battery itself will be larger and that longer battery life will further be improved thanks to the efficiency of the A15 chip.
Weinbach previously stated that the new iPhones would include stronger MagSafe, astrophotography capabilities, and the ability to take portrait mode videos.
Earlier this week, images sent to MacRumors show alleged photos of the front glass panels for the iPhone 13 models, which show the earpieces relocated to the top bezel. If true, it would be the most significant change to the notch's design since its debut in the iPhone X. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple plans to switch to a hole-punch design for some iPhone models starting in 2022.

Apple leaving the “S” moniker behind, along with skipping the iPhone 7s, 8s, 9/9S is going to really put them in an awkward situation, sooner rather than later.
iPhone 23 is just a bit ridiculous.
I swear they’ve been predicting in display Touch ID was coming for ‘21 for the past year or so & know that it’s ‘21. CricketsTouch ID maybe?
The current graphite is dark yes but it’s a tad lighter than the 11 pro graphite was120hz displays suck down battery life fast, so the “always on” display is questionable. Even if the refresh rate is dynamic, they still soak up a ton of juice to run.
I think touchID is a given.
“More graphite than graphite” seems strange. The current graphite is pretty dark.
Copper colored would be slick. Bronze, no thanks.
Fingerprint resistant coatings seems reasonable as well. The steel on the pros, and the back smooth glass on the regular 12’s get disgusting fast.
Superstition is dumb. Name it 13.
With all the AI they've bought maybe the camera will just use stellar map/GPS/orientation to artificially place stars, planets, etc., in your photos. And then Siri will tell you that YOU took a great photo."Astrophotography capabilities"? I wonder what that means. You need either a LOT of light gathering or a sidereal mount to get good night sky photos. And decent zoom capability helps.
I have dropped it many times, believe me. But it hasn't smashed yet. I just like those beautiful things without rubberAs soon as your expensive iPhone goes to the deck and the screen is ruined, you'll get a case. You'll also be kicking yourself that you didn't at the outset. Yep, the color on the back is nice, but....
Is that the only thing? And it’s an improvement. You guys act like we just arrived here overnight."a new stainless steel coating that reduces smudges and fingerprints"
When you've run out of ideas to differentiate your products...![]()
Same here.I have dropped it many times, believe me. But it hasn't smashed yet. I just like those beautiful things without rubber![]()
huh? I love my iPhone 12 Pro Max and will get plenty of use b4 I buy the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I've had hours of fun playing with with LiDar apps. SooooooooooooI feel so sorry for anyone who bought that iPhone 12 piece of junk
Like the fold-able iPhone. That make total sense, every year, people clamor for "the new device" and then endless amounts of people hate on it....and then repeat next year. I think there is only so much these devices. I think all of the ground breaking stuff happened in the first number of years of smartphones. Now, I think it will be perennial tweaks to features and functionality...until there is once again, some crazy new iteration.
As long as they keep face ID as well then I'm down with it.Just my $0.02, but I think Under Glass TouchID will be the ONE & ONLY reason most buy, OR consider buying, the upcoming 12s/13 !
Apple clearly likes to try to load-up iPhones with Bells & Whistles as selling points, but it would NOT be smart of them to ignore the fact that the pivot from TouchID to FaceID pissed-off many.
The upcoming 12s/13 iPhones offer a convenience factor that, I believe, many will take notice of once they get wind of it.
Apple would be smart to aggressively promote it.
And, I stand by my earlier statements of a day OR two ago, that Tim Cook's AAPL sucks at Product Planning & Definition !
I miss the Steve Jobs AAPL !
I personally believe the Weak Link @ Apple is its Top Mgmt (Cook, Schiller, etc).
Would love to see MR put a poll together that gets Users to help list the top "Engineering Accomplishments" that have occurred in the Apple ecosystem under Cook's reign as CEO.
And here I mean both first-party & third-party.
I'll start, & even project out into the future alittle, I believe Under Glass TouchID will be perceived as the single-greatest Engineering Accomplishment under Cook !
From a User's perspective, most don't care if Apple internally developed it, OR if they just incorporated it into their products.
As such, Apple will get credit for it from most Users.
And that's ok.
It will be perceived as the single-most-important "Benefit" added into an iPhone in years !
In other words, it will very-likely be "The Catalyst" for iPhone Unit Sales later this year.
Or the CPU processor is just a separate little box that stays in the pocket and bag and you have a remote screen that could be very thin and foldable. I think that as time goes on these devices will get further and further away from being a "phone" as they used to be....but just my .02Like the fold-able iPhone.
