Save your cash - it will still make phone calls and have the same UI :)

If only Apple could make iPhone SE (1st Gen) all screen and move the TouchID to Sleep button at the top - that would be a dream phone IMO.
I have nothing else to spend my cash on but the newest glass rectangle.

I wonder if it's going to be worth upgrading from a 14PM... I have so many lightning cables around, I'm not sure I'm ready for USB-C...
I could years ago I felt that way and now my iPad is USB C, my drone, my camera, my quest 2. Pretty much anything i charge except the stupid apple mouse and keyboard they’ve also failed to update.

I swear to God, I would have still be using iPhone 4 if not for its iOS and app lag. Not a single iPhone I had (5) had hardware issues. All depahted due to software ware-out.

You are doing something most of us seem to have forgotten: making the most of your money. That's even an enemy to inflation by illustrating you view your newly-earned dollars as worth more than than the modest feature upgrades vs. the iPhone you already have. In the most tangible way possible short of doing without completely, you are fighting consumer inflation. Prices would come down if most people would demonstrate more value for their money than paying any price because 'I must have the new one.'

I do a perhaps crazier thing: no iPhone at all. Instead I make a cellular iPad mini double as phone (voip app + buds). iPad mini costs a lot less than iPhone. iPad 5G cellular service costs a lot less than iPhone service (mine works out to $25 PER YEAR). iPad OS seems to reasonably "keep up" over a longer time table than iOS, so my last jump was from the "2" to the "6" after about 8 years. I presume my next upgrade will probably be Mini 10 or so, 3 more generations from now. IMO, all apps are better on a bigger screen. I'm already USB-C and have been for years (and FYI: no port damage, no jiggly, no lint magnet, etc). Mini is also notch-less and screen hole-less.

Like your examples, the money savings is substantial over time. Mini rings when I get calls. Texting works the same. Nobody on the other end can tell I'm not using a true phone.
Was thinking of doing that, but how do you cope when eg a Bank wants to send you an SMS for ID verification?

Bottomline: Everything is bigger and better about the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro. You should upgrade!

All of the items listed go in the plus column. However, eSIM only is still a huge, showstopping negative for me.

If the international prices weren't absolutely bonkers I would import a UK model. Unless this year they decide to inflict it on the UK too.

eSIM just does not work as reliably as a physical SIM. It can’t in the same way a wired connection is superior to wireless in every way except the wire. For me, eSIM is all negatives and no positives.

what about 13 pro vs. 20 pro?

Really! I read the title and was like, wtf, has the iPhone 15Pro been released already? No? Then why are they presenting a comparison as if Apple has released it? I'd like to see more accurate titles.

"iPhone 13 Pro vs. Rumored 15 Pro: Our best guess."

In these type of articles I see so many people getting worked up over things that might not even happen. There is always a surprise or two. And then when a product IS released, they whine because its not what was rumored.

It arrives and I confirm. Messages (app) works on iPad (and Mac too). And the VOIP app can handle texts from sources other than Apple people.

If you want issues, here they are (best I know them):
  • iPad mini is not as pocketable. Suit pockets or coats work. Else it's in hand or bag. I tuck it under an arm at times... or do this much crazier, shocking (to some) thing and leave it in the car. Being unplugged for short stretches has some pleasant benefits IMO.
  • E911 instead of 911. No satt emergency connection.
  • No vibrate mode.
  • If someone feels they must use other Apple tech (Watch, CarPlay) dependent on iPhone, Mini doesn't support them or support them as well. I still favor traditional watches and the system that came with my car will link via bluetooth for some functionality like speakerphone calls. My car has a good mapping system built in.
  • Apple Pay exists on Mini but not the pay-with-phone functionality. No big deal to me but some want to boycott stores that won't let them cut Apple in on every possible transaction.
  • The best iPhones have superior cameras, but Mini can shoot 4K and no complaints about pics.
  • No Face ID but I'm quite happy with touchID in the power button, especially since that means no notch/island.
I think that's all of them. There may be a few more. Some of those would be option killers for some people. Obviously, this is not for everyone... but works just fine for my purposes. In exchange for those issues, I spend a LOT less than iPhone people over time. None of those features are important enough to me to reverse that (though I'd be first to buy an iPad Mini "Pro" with iPhone MAX cameras)... and I wish CarPlay wasn't locked to iPhone for perhaps the NEXT car I buy. I'm aware that there is a hack for CarPlay and that it exists in iPadOS, so maybe Apple will make iPads work too or I'll investigate the hack when I get the next car.

With the 14 Pro, I went back down to "regular" size rather than Max. Really like that form factor better, but if the better zoom is only in the larger phone, guess I'll be moving back up.

Was thinking maybe could get a Mini into Cargo trousers....

Which is the VOIP app you find works?

Thats a very interesting point. My 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 for instance has a A10 Fusion SoC while my iPhone 11 has an A11 Bionic, yet its not getting the iOS 17 upgrade but my 2017 iPad will get iPadOS 17. Either way, I am maxing out both devices. The upgrades each year are just diminishing returns at this point and even Apple knows it. Why you do you think they are Segwaying into radical categories like the Vision Pro? At the end of the day, what do you think the Vision Pro is gonna be running, re-jiggered iPadOS and iOS apps. Apple just keeps selling you the same fundamental experience over and over again.

Don't come for me on better photos and videos. Seriously, we have photo albums from 50 years ago and we hardly complain. Photos taken on an iPhone 4s still look darn good.
Yeah, especially because the iPhone 4S had an awesome camera for that time. I had a 4S and was astonished by the pictures it used to capture. I even think, sometimes, that the camera from the slimmer iPhone 5 suffered a regression.

Yeah; I’m sure he’s rolling in his grave with Apple approaching a 3 Trillion Dollar market evaluation.

He’s probably rolling around thinking of all that money he could be enjoying.
It wasn't all about the money with Steve Jobs, unlike some other CEOs. Jobs cared more about creating amazing products and he also cared about customer experience. Cook cares about neither.

Which is the VOIP app you find works?

I've used many of them over the years. Just try them. You can download them to any iPad- even wifi only- or maybe an older iPhone (and maybe still the iPod touch) and they generally will give you a phone number. Then text & call your phone and vice versa to see how it works. Or call a friend so they can tell you about voice quality and you can hear their voice. Later, if you choose to go this way, port your main number or use the one the app gives you.

Currently, I use Google Voice, which brings an added benefit of using the Obihai device to make the home "landline" phones use it too. In other words, when my "phone" rings, my home phones ring too. I can take calls on my "phone" or on those home phones. I can make calls on my "phone" or on those home phones too. Local & Long Distance via Google Voice to North America is $0/yr.

In the past when I had Comcast Voice for landline, I used the Comcast VOIP app on iPad Mini 2. That worked very well.

I've also used Talkatone and it works very well too.

There's several others in the store including some with some paid service options for added features. Just check them out, maybe try one and see for yourself. It "just works" fine. People generally don't believe it can work at all... or won't work well... but the app on iPhone is basically Apple's version of a VOIP app too. If they packaged it as such, it would work on iPad and Macs.

Cargo trousers probably would work. I'll try that.

Can you do the same for 13 vs 15, for those of us who don’t want a fugly phone with boring colours that weighs more than a brick?

Only upgrade if you are from iPhone 12 series and older... If you are on 13 series and 14 series, don't upgrade yet... Unless you have the financial capability by either trading your current phone or paying full price...
Ooh a full price elitist, wish I was as rich as you

Hard to call. The clues say it is based on iPad OS. I'm (probably fruitlessly) hoping for a macOS option (Vpro + Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or trackpad in a laptop bag seems WOW!)... but- to me anyway- I'd be quite thrilled if Vpro can work as a big ultra-wide monitor for a MB as illustrated in the demo. If it can do that ONE thing well, I almost don't care what else it can do. And that seems like- basically- Airplay, so it seems like it should do that pretty well.

To me, the "killer app" for Vpro is a mobile laptop with an any-size screen that doesn't require the weight & size to carry an actual any-size screen. I'm hoping that it is the screen "half" of my next Mac laptop: about a 40" ultra-wide screen so that my productivity experience from my desktop UW is replicated when on the road, on the plane, etc. I don't even want to imagine the weight & size of a 40" laptop in non-virtual terms.

We'll see. In-person demos will be quite telling. I look forward to seeing how well it does this one thing with my own eyes.
