The only thing motivating me to upgrade is the rumour that the following IPP 16 will be an even bigger unwieldy behemoth of a phone and this one might actually be better suited for one-handed use than IPP 12-14 have been.

Performance and day-to-day use of my IPP 11 doesn't really leave me wanting for anything else, though. Slick phone compared to what goes now. Also a real looker.

There was a time where upgrading every other generation meant substantial upgrades. Now I feel like most folks can get away with upgrading every 3 years without missing much.
Three years? I've never upgraded sooner than five. With the incremental changes now that the smart phone has matured as a product, I'd say I am heading to every eight years.

Why is it important to justify an upgrade on this forum?

Seriously if a consumer wants to upgrade only their terms will justify one not some article on comparing specs as most consumers don’t even give a hoot or understand them. Most consumers care about is oh it takes out better pictures that’s nice (won’t even notice it tbh), longer battery life, storage space and price.

The rest is fluff by any manufacturer to pad spec sheets for ego and a minority of nerds who feel a phones specs is more important than living life. 😝
Because that is what is discussed on the internet. The OP was comparing to help you decide if it is worth it. If you don't want justification you're not in a thread like this.

13Pro doesn't have emergency SOS via satellite capability, I would upgrade just for of that.

Save your cash - it will still make phone calls and have the same UI :)

If only Apple could make iPhone SE (1st Gen) all screen and move the TouchID to Sleep button at the top - that would be a dream phone IMO.

While year-over-year iPhone upgrades are not always significant, new features begin to stack up over multiple generations. For this reason, the iPhone 15 Pro will be a notable upgrade for those who still have a two-year-old iPhone 13 Pro.

If you are still using an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and will consider upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max when the devices launch later this year, we have put together a list of features to expect below. The list includes major changes introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro last year, as well as new features rumored for iPhone 15 Pro models.

We also shared an iPhone 12 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro comparison.

iPhone 13 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro
  • A17 chip vs. A15 chip: The 5nm-based A16 chip in the iPhone 14 Pro is already up to 17% faster than the A15 chip in the iPhone 13 Pro, according to the Geekbench 6 benchmark. The iPhone 15 Pro will be equipped with the A17 chip, which is expected to be manufactured based on TSMC's latest 3nm process for even faster performance and improved power efficiency over the previous generation.
  • USB-C port: With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple is finally expected to switch from Lightning to a USB-C port. This change will provide a more universal charging standard and allow for faster wired data transfer speeds.
  • Titanium frame: Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to have a titanium frame instead of stainless steel. The back glass and display bezels are also expected to have slightly curved edges.
  • Action button: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with a customizable Action button like the Apple Watch Ultra. The button would replace the Ring/Silent switch that has been included on every iPhone model since 2007. Users would likely be able to assign the button to various system functions, such as Ring/Silent, Do Not Disturb, Flashlight, Low Power Mode, and more.
  • Dynamic Island: With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple replaced the notch with the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped area surrounding the Face ID sensors and front camera. The Dynamic Island displays system alerts and integrates with iOS 16's Live Activities feature to show live NBA scores, the status of an Uber ride, and more.
  • Always-on display option: With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple introduced an always-on display option that dims the entire Lock Screen, but still shows the time and date, widgets, wallpaper, and notifications. Once you raise the iPhone, tap the screen, or press the side button, the display returns to normal brightness.
  • Thinner bezels: Similar to the Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8, the iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to have even thinner bezels around the display.
  • Longer battery life: Already, the iPhone 14 Pro lasts up to 23 hours for offline video playback, compared to 22 hours for the iPhone 13 Pro. With components like the A17 chip and the LiDAR Scanner expected to be more power efficient this year, the iPhone 15 Pro could have even longer battery life.
  • Numerous camera improvements: iPhone 13 Pro users upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro will get access to a wide range of camera upgrades, including a 48-megapixel Wide lens, an upgraded front camera with autofocus, Action mode, and more. Increased optical zoom is also expected for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • eSIM only in U.S.: Apple removed the physical SIM card tray from all iPhone 14 models sold in the U.S., meaning the devices work with eSIMs only. The devices are still compatible with physical SIM cards in other countries.
  • Increased RAM: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with an increased 8GB of RAM, compared to 6GB for the iPhone 13 Pro. Increased RAM can benefit multitasking on the iPhone by allowing more apps to be open in the background simultaneously without reloading.
  • Wi-Fi 6E: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to support Wi-Fi 6E, which supports the 6GHz band for faster wireless speeds, lower latency, and less signal interference compared to standard Wi-Fi 6.
  • Emergency SOS via Satellite: iPhone 14 models can connect to Globalstar satellites, enabling users to send text messages to emergency services when outside the range of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. The service is free for two years after activation, and is currently available in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, the U.K., Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and select other countries.
  • Crash Detection: New for the iPhone 14 series, Crash Detection is designed to detect severe car crashes and contact emergency services via Emergency SOS if the user does not respond. The feature is enabled by default.
  • 5G improvements: iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X70 modem for improved 5G performance.
Apple will likely unveil the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in September, and the devices could have additional features that have yet to be rumored.

Looks a good upgrade, not convinced with the aesthetics of Titanium, although like the fact it's lighter.
Happy with my 13 Pro, my next purchase will be a MacBook Pro M3 14" or 16" not sure which, but slowly being swayed towards the bigger screen, despite the fact I don't like the weight 😏

You know what I find astounding, I am going to get 7 to 8 years out of my iPhone X. The 8th year would be one more year of security updates for iOS 16.

That means an iPhone 12 could be maxed out in 2027, iPhone 13 in 2028.

Think of how much money you could save on needless upgrades. Don't come for me on better photos and videos. Seriously, we have photo albums from 50 years ago and we hardly complain. Photos taken on an iPhone 4s still look darn good.
I'm good with my 13Pro, the next time I upgrade is either when they get rid of the night flares 😡 or launch a Pro Mini (even if it's the 11 pro size) as long as it's made with pro materials 😊

Maybe a question for those Apple Watch Ultra people but how does the Titanium fare when it comes to scratching/dings/nicks/etc?

I have to say, I'm unimpressed with the dull look of the Ultra's body compared to the SS of my AW7 so I'm wondering if the 15 Pro might visually look "cheaper" when it comes out? Unless it will be polished?
The only reason I got the series 8 SS, was because of the cheap Titanium finish on the ultra

Yes, but modern Smartphones were very new back then, and a 2 year purchase cycle actually made some sense. 16 years later and the phones and their technology are much more mature.

I’ll never understand why anyone would want a colored phone. A case covers it all the time anyways. I forget my 13 pro max is graphite all the time Cus its always in a black case.
I clean my 13Pro graphite every week, it's beautiful when out of the case 😊

Apples cases are crazy overpriced and not particularly high quality or protective. I had a clear case for awhile but if it gets scratched up or gets moisture and stuff inside it it just looks rough. I got a nicely textused black spigen case and its lasted for years.
The pre-iPhone 12 leather cases are excellent quality.

The iPhone 12 and later cases are terrible.

We plan to upgrade from base iPhone 11's. Hopefully T-Mobile offers "free" devices with port in and trade in. Id consider a pro max or two (will probably have to pay chase in top) if the differences are large enough. I clearly keep my phone for a while and it's my "only" camera (the dslr sites in the closet outside of trios or very special locations).

Having said all that, USB c is what has me excited and waiting. We would've done the switch to T-Mobile and iPhone 14 months ago but I didn't want to commit to 3-4 years on a device that didn't have C. Can't come fast enough.

I was planning on upgrading this year from my 13 Pro Max. I like 3 things about the 15PM: Thinner bezels, camera improvements, and the SOS via Satellite. Yet my 13PM does everything I need, so I’m going to wait for the 16PM and purchase the Vision Pro when it come out. 2024 is going to be an expensive year for us, so we’ll be saving up in the meantime… 😉

Save your cash - it will still make phone calls and have the same UI :)

Its not going to happen, but ill keep dreaming about it

My cases don’t scratch up (and if they did, they’d be doing their job!)

Try the clear Apple case; I think you’ll like it. I’m perfectly happy with it on my 14 Pro Max. I love it showing off my gold phone (first colour other than silver/white that I have ever bought.)

Of course, there are many 3rd party clear cases.

Spigen is quite a good brand from my recollection.

I would like to see real world battery life, i am least worried about video playback. I am not planing to watch videos continuously for 23 hours.

Most people want large phone, it is unfortunate.
