iPhone 13? I’m still on the iPhone 11 Pro Max and I don’t see any differences between this and my wife’s iPhone 14 Pro Max to justify spending another $1200 on it.

Fix the phone, add new features besides a damn chip upgrade which makes 0 difference and then maybe I will. That list of reasons is soooooo reminiscent of Android from 15 years ago. Only thing they upgraded was processors and camera mega pixels while Jobs was reinventing the cell phone.

Yeah! I've still got an 11 Pro Max. Years ago, I resolved not to get another iPhone until it had a USB-C connection instead of Lightning. I guess my time has finally come.
I thought the same thing, however now that it's here my 11PM is totally fine so I'm wondering if I wait until next year... haha

The removal of the physical sim card isn’t a feature, it’s a regression.

This makes travel to certain countries difficult, expensive, and sometimes even impossible.

My telco also makes it difficult to move eSIMs between devices. I need to either visit a store to get a physical QR code, or have a QR code posted to. I’m not joking. Putting this power in telcos hands was never a good idea.

Same. The removal of the physical SIM card is not a "feature" to me. I just want to move the SIM card from one phone to any phone that accepts SIM cards of my choosing. Takes like maybe 30 seconds. DONE! Don't have to call anyone or visit any website, just make the switch and...DONE!

And the "action button" or whatever isn't a feature for me either. I like my toggle switch. Just flip it down or up and that's it. Don't have to look at the screen or use a pulldown menu or anything. Simple, easy, and it works just fine.

For my wife and I, the camera upgrades are at the top of the list of reasons for grades - specifically, the for-real optical zoom (Periscope lens). My wife is still on her iPhone X while I upgraded a while back to a 12 Pro Max. The USB-C port is also a selling point since just about everything we own has switched to that. Beyond that, things like the Dynamic Island, etc., are all "nice to haves" (and my wife will love having a fresh battery)

While year-over-year iPhone upgrades are not always significant, new features begin to stack up over multiple generations. For this reason, the iPhone 15 Pro will be a notable upgrade for those who still have a two-year-old iPhone 13 Pro.

If you are still using an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and will consider upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max when the devices launch later this year, we have put together a list of features to expect below. The list includes major changes introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro last year, as well as new features rumored for iPhone 15 Pro models.

We also shared an iPhone 12 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro comparison.

iPhone 13 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro
  • A17 chip vs. A15 chip: The 5nm-based A16 chip in the iPhone 14 Pro is already up to 17% faster than the A15 chip in the iPhone 13 Pro, according to the Geekbench 6 benchmark. The iPhone 15 Pro will be equipped with the A17 chip, which is expected to be manufactured based on TSMC's latest 3nm process for even faster performance and improved power efficiency over the previous generation.
  • USB-C port: With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple is finally expected to switch from Lightning to a USB-C port. This change will provide a more universal charging standard and allow for faster wired data transfer speeds.
  • Titanium frame: Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to have a titanium frame instead of stainless steel. The back glass and display bezels are also expected to have slightly curved edges.
  • Action button: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with a customizable Action button like the Apple Watch Ultra. The button would replace the Ring/Silent switch that has been included on every iPhone model since 2007. Users would likely be able to assign the button to various system functions, such as Ring/Silent, Do Not Disturb, Flashlight, Low Power Mode, and more.
  • Dynamic Island: With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple replaced the notch with the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped area surrounding the Face ID sensors and front camera. The Dynamic Island displays system alerts and integrates with iOS 16's Live Activities feature to show live NBA scores, the status of an Uber ride, and more.
  • Always-on display option: With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple introduced an always-on display option that dims the entire Lock Screen, but still shows the time and date, widgets, wallpaper, and notifications. Once you raise the iPhone, tap the screen, or press the side button, the display returns to normal brightness.
  • Thinner bezels: Similar to the Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8, the iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to have even thinner bezels around the display.
  • Longer battery life: Already, the iPhone 14 Pro lasts up to 23 hours for offline video playback, compared to 22 hours for the iPhone 13 Pro. With components like the A17 chip and the LiDAR Scanner expected to be more power efficient this year, the iPhone 15 Pro could have even longer battery life.
  • Numerous camera improvements: iPhone 13 Pro users upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro will get access to a wide range of camera upgrades, including a 48-megapixel Wide lens, an upgraded front camera with autofocus, Action mode, and more. Increased optical zoom is also expected for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • eSIM only in U.S.: Apple removed the physical SIM card tray from all iPhone 14 models sold in the U.S., meaning the devices work with eSIMs only. The devices are still compatible with physical SIM cards in other countries.
  • Increased RAM: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with an increased 8GB of RAM, compared to 6GB for the iPhone 13 Pro. Increased RAM can benefit multitasking on the iPhone by allowing more apps to be open in the background simultaneously without reloading.
  • Wi-Fi 6E: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to support Wi-Fi 6E, which supports the 6GHz band for faster wireless speeds, lower latency, and less signal interference compared to standard Wi-Fi 6.
  • Emergency SOS via Satellite: iPhone 14 models can connect to Globalstar satellites, enabling users to send text messages to emergency services when outside the range of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. The service is free for two years after activation, and is currently available in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, the U.K., Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and select other countries.
  • Crash Detection: New for the iPhone 14 series, Crash Detection is designed to detect severe car crashes and contact emergency services via Emergency SOS if the user does not respond. The feature is enabled by default.
  • 5G improvements: iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X70 modem for improved 5G performance.
Apple will likely unveil the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in September, and the devices could have additional features that have yet to be rumored.

So not really much at all aside from a bunch of minor things that don't really matter.

I skipped last years update for the first time ever. Looking like two years in a row...

Your telco sounds like they haven't given eSIM setup much thought.

With mine I can just sign in to my account on the web, scan a QR code and I'm done in 10 seconds. It can take up to a few hours for a phone to activate on the network but at least the process is so easy to initiate. It really is as simple as scanning a code. I'm surprised other telcos make it unnecessarily difficult for customers.

If you buy a new phone then you can also put them side by side in the setup process and the transfer of eSIM from one device to another is instantaneous.

I've been wondering, have any rumours said whether the new telephoto lens on the max will be 48mp or higher than 12mp? The 48mp photos I get from the 14 pro are super good, would love to see that amount of detail in a telephoto camera.

I think I’ll just get a fresh battery installed on my 13 pro and wait another generation.

I am still happy with it and I also need the psychical sim slot as I travel out of country every year where e-sim is still a challenge or comes with limited choices.

13 Pro Owner and none of those things will entice me to upgrade. This will be the longest I’ve kept an iPhone for.

I recently had to have the back glass replaced under Apple Care & they gave me pretty much a new phone and battery (my screen was flawless as was the frame which was all they kept … just to replace some glass!! ). Repairability sucks for Apple stuff (all glued together it seems) but worked out for me lol since the phone now has 100% battery health and it’s insides are brand new.

- only because I had Apple care. If not the cost would have been ridiculous.

(Ultra glass screen protector and Otterbox case helps). The only inconvenience was losing all my phone data and restoring from a backup.

I will probably pick up a 16 or 17 if they wow me. (Subject to them being affordable by that point !!)

I've got a 13 Pro but I'm on the fence about upgrading. The camera doesn't matter to me at all. I'm a fairly serious amateur photographer and have a number of cameras with interchangeable lenses. I use my iPhone camera only in a pinch. But I understand the appeal to others. I am interested in having a 3nm chip to extend battery life. And the thought of a titanium chassis to save weight is also appealing. But these two features will allegedly be on the Pro models only - and I've been thinking about cutting back from spending that kind of money. If I don't go for a 15 Pro, I guess I'd wait until the iPhone 16 comes out and grab a base version of that. All this, while I ponder an M3 Mac upgrade later this year or early next year - although my 2019 iMac still seems to work fine.

your 13pm assuming its a 512gb model or higher, is worth 800-1k Right Now. after the 15 release, expect what the 12 pro max is selling for right now, which is 500 range lol.
That's not been my experience. I do this same thing every two years. There are always gift card and discount offers on the new phones around Black Friday--I usually do Walmart or Best Buy because it's basically as good as cash.

Buy iPhone 13PM: $1199
Free Walmart gift card with iPhone purchase: -$400
Sell iPhone XS Max on Swap: -$750
Grand total: $49 + a few taxes/fees (so I call it net $200)

I never have to replace a battery and I get a new iPhone every two years this way.

Also, it's been nine months since the 14 was released and the 12PM is still selling for $6-700...

I have a 13PM and only thing imma upgrade is to a fresh battery at the beginning of next year. I’m at 87% right now and the battery swap is free under AC+. Have a Series 6 AW and just waiting for a AW Ultra to come out in darker color to buy it. Will get a iPad mini 6 in a couple months to replace my 2018 12.9 iPad Pro as daily driver.

Meanwhile I'm still rocking' with my iPhone 7 Plus and very happy with it.

Nice! 👍

What's with this infatuation to need to upgrade to the latest and greatest so often and soon!?

I held onto my iPhone SE for 5 years before I accidentally smashed the screen, and upgraded to a 12 mini. Hell, my iPad Pro I've had for almost 8 years now. I tend to wait until the OS no longer supports a device before I upgrade.

13 Pro Max here, and I am debating. Most of the features other than a better camera and a mostly unnecessary performance boost, are not anything that makes me excited. Less bezels are nice I guess. Titanium frame, whooopdydoo. Action button, I care why? Dynamic Island, my wife has a 14 Pro and while sometimes it looks cool with notifications, when looking at her phone for normal use I have not yet become sure that it looks like an improvement or not. The notch is less interrupting to me, I think, but I have only had the notch and so am used to it.

I was considering going to the normal Pro 15 from the 13 Pro Max, but if the 15 Pro does not get the same camera as the 15 Pro Max then the regular Pro is not even something I would consider. So I may be best waiting for the 16 Pro.

Time to upgrade the 6S. I gain all these features listed too. But doesn't mention what I'll lose:

* headphone jack - will have to try keep my annoying iPad audio dongles more handy, else in a lot of random cases I can't just plug in nearly any sound system anywhere.

* Force touch. A lot of it's functionality won't be missed, but I'll very much miss that I can easily move cursors anywhere within text up/down/left or right, rather than the far inferior hover on the space then can go upwards/L/R. I'm somewhat used to it on my iPad, but it's clearly inferior to be able to do it anywhere on the keyboard area for more flexibility with no delay of hovering.
