Coming from the 12 Mini my initial reaction was W.T.F.!! Had to double check the package that Apple hadn't sent me the Max by accident 🤣

I think I will get used to the weight, after using it for just a couple of minutes my Mini started to feel insanely tiny so positive that my body will adapt to whatever tech I throw at it.
I'm also coming from a 12 Mini. I'm picking up my 13 Pro later this morning in-store and we'll see my first reaction to the weight and size. I also originally had the iPhone 11 so the 13 Pro is a great in between size from the 11 and Mini.

Yes, this is the thing I was waiting (weighting?) for, this thread. I intend to upgrade my iPhone, sometime in the next few months, and I'm trying to decide between the 13 mini and the 13 Pro. This will be my first multi-lens phone, and I would really like that telephoto lens! So I'm weighing (*cough*) the tradeoffs, and this is the one I'm most concerned about. My current phone is the SE 2020, and it's the largest and heaviest phone I've ever had. This would be larger and heavier!

Of course at some point I'll be going to the Apple Store to feel the heft first hand, but even then you really get the sense not by holding it once or putting it in your pocket once but over the course of a day, a week.

When Apple brought out the iPhone 5, it felt so light it might have been a stage prop. I didn't like that feeling. My 4S wasn't heavy, but it was almost 30 grams heavier than the 5, and it was concentrated into a smaller form factor, so it was significantly denser and felt like a good, solid piece of technology. When I upgraded it wasn't to the 5S but to the 5c, in part because it was actually almost as heavy as the 4S!

My current SE 2020 is the heaviest phone I've ever used, and it checks in at 148 grams. The 13 mini is just slightly lighter, at 141 grams. The 13 Pro is 203 grams: that's 55 grams heavier than what I currently have. That's a lot! I went looking around the house for something about that weight I could strap to my current iPhone so I could simulate the weight for a few days. Haven't found anything yet that's a good shape to do it with. But I do have these butter knives that are 60 grams, and just picking that up alone I thought, whoa, that's heavy. Put it in my pocket with my phone I couldn't tell, because it's the wrong shape. In fact because its volume is much less than a phone's then it's really not a good comparison, because it's so much denser. I'll need to find something that distributes those 60 grams better.

Though this is a fun thought, that comes up in many areas of life, it's a misnomer: it's only a valid point if it's the same people that are making both complaints. There are certainly people with loud voices that have complained about the battery, and people with equally loud voices that will complain about the weight, but they may not be the same people.

That is the part I wonder about too. I was pretty worried about adapting to the size of the SE 2020. My previous phone was the SE 2016; I'd never had one of the 6-style iPhones. But I got used to that immediately, and that is 35 grams heavier than the 2016 model. I would love to believe that that is just the way of things: that I'll simply get used to it. But I suspect there is a line somewhere; that 148 grams was heavier than I had ever had but it was still less than whatever that magic weight is that I would find annoying. Perhaps the 13 Pro will surpass that line, I don't know.

(And that is still leaving out the size part of it, apart from the weight.)

But it is a tradeoff. How often will I use the telephoto lens? I think I would use it a lot. If I do find the weight annoying, then it's going to be annoying me almost all of my waking hours, whether it's in my hand or in my pocket. How much enjoyment will I get from the telephoto to balance that out?

I'm thinking way too much about this. I really need to get out more.
Yes, you need to get out. And buy yourself a 13 Pro which is what you need in your life ;)

Yes please do share! My initial reaction was quite shocked, but I'm confident it's something you get used to in no time. Also had the 11 Pro before so it's not like I am completely unused to the size, just need to remember it :)

Of course the 13 Pro is going to feel significantly heavier than the 12 Mini. It's 51% heavier. I just got a 13 Pro and holding it in one hand and my Mini in the other, it feels half again as heavy. No mystery there.

To be fair, I don't think that is the mystery. The mystery is, "Is this too heavy for me?" And that is a mystery to which we will each have our own answer. The worst kind of mystery!

I can feel the weight difference from my 12 PM to my 13 PM. It does feel heavier but I'll wait and see as I expect a better battery life. If it's good as they claim, it'll be worth the weight.

I went from a 12 pro to a 13 pro max and don’t really notice much in weight difference.

Without a case, my 12 Pro weighs 188.2g; with Apple Leather MagSafe Case, 214.8g

Without a case, my 13 Pro Max weights 241.5g; with Apple Leather MagSafe Case, 271.1g

So without a case, my 13 Pro Max is about 28% heavier than the 12 Pro; with a case, only about 26% heavier.

I have no problem with the weight of the 13 Pro Max.

It's about 6% heavier.

I'm always sensitive to weight with these devices. I was pretty happy last year when they managed to reduce the weight on the 12 and 12 Pro.

I ended up going with the 12 over the Pro for a few reasons - colour and weight - and sacrificed telephoto + LiDAR for that.

This year though, with the major camera improvement and having missed the telephoto camera quite a bit, I went with the Pro. But holy does it feel substantial in the hand compared to the 12. That aluminum 12 had this nice lightweight feel to it.

My wife got the 13, and even hers has a nicer feel in the hand I would say. But in the end I'll get used to it.

As others said, it's the battery, which is significantly larger. In the case of the 13 Pro Max, the battery is enough bigger (which means heavier) that it has an estimated two hours more runtime than the 12 Pro Max.

The weight of the 13 Pro Max (compared to me 12 Pro Max) was the first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box. It’s noticeably heavier. But i’m sure i’ll get used to it…

Anyone else finding this iPhone extraordinarily heavy? Not sure if I should get used to it or return.

thought they’d be a thread on the weight! Reminds me of a brick!

Coming from an iPhone 11 the 13 Pro definitely feels heavy. But I've said for years, give me a thicker phone with a bigger battery and I'll be happy. I did also say to lose the camera bump in the thickness but Apple must have heard me say to make the bump even bigger ;)

It is 16 g heavier than the iPhone 11 Pro but 30 g heavier than the regular iPhone 13 so if you want lightweight then the regular iPhone is the way to go. Of course the reduced weight is because of lighter and fewer components. You could go with the mini at 63 g lighter
Not only that, Stainless steel.

A brick would be the 12/13 Pro Max. It’s not much heavier then the 12 Pro it replaced. My sister has the 13 Pro Max. No thanks! It’s not a phone and a mini tablet. Glad I stayed with the 13 Pro.

Uh huh. Aluminum frame, you then would complain it bends easy.

SS is the best choice in this case. It’s not like anyone didn’t know it would be heavier. It was talked about all over the net.
Actually 7000 series aluminum is a premium metal compared to the Stainless steel apple uses. 7000 series aluminum cost almost 4 times as much per pound. They use it to make satellites and space craft. You would need a hydralic press to bend it. 7000 series aluminum is very similar to titanium, actually was developed as a substitute to titanium for the aerospace industry to reduce costs over titanium. When it comes to build materials, the iphone 13 is using better materials in the 7000 series aluminum over the pro models. Apple's profit margin on the pros is higher because of it. They are counting on people like yourself to not know any better.
In the pro models the shiny edges really don’t matter since it will have a case on it for most. Durability wise the aluminum will also have a case on it so that really doesn’t matter. But one difference you can tell will be the weight of the phone. The aluminum will be way lighter. I have been waiting for awhile for a OLED aluminum iPhone after using just the x, then xs, and 11 pro models. Wnt with a 12 last year and now i have a 13 non pro model.

Stainless steel serves little purpose in a phone, zero actually. The 7000 series aluminum is durable enough for almost anyone outside a hydraulic press. There is a reason Samsung, Oneplus, and every phone manufacturer other than Apple use it. Weight. Apple just ignores this because their Apple and make a higher profit margin. Jony Ive was against it during the iphone X's development, and he left shortly after. Now that is not the sole reason he left as i am sure it was a number of things, but Ive knew design and cared about the product, like jobs above all else. Cook doesn't.

Aluminum also conducts heat way better. Stainless steel not so much. Hardness is closer than people think. Scratch resistance will be similar to both. Benefit of steel you can buff them out, aluminum no. There are benefits to using steel, I just think 7000 aluminum has more. I have a stainless steel Apple Watch but I like the added weight and the sapphire. In a phone not so much.

Not buying it. I had a 12 Pro Max and sent it back for the 12 Pro. Now I have the 13 Pro and my sister has the 13 Pro Max. Big ass honking unwieldy heavy beast it is.
