Yeah, I wonder about that, too. I think there must be a technical reason why. That the aluminum somehow interferes with the new camera system or with the ProMotion screen in some way I'm not qualified to understand? Or that the stainless steel provides some kind of technical benefit and not just a superficial one? I just don't think Apple (or any other manufacturer of pocket tech) would just use the heavier stuff just 'cuz, unless they had a too-light product that they felt SHOULD be heavier for user experience. They surely know how heavy the phones are, and how nice it would be for it to be a few grams lighter. So I'm pretty confident these decisions weren't made lightly or for just cosmetic reasons.

But what do I know? I'm a sheep. Baaaaaaa.
My guess is that its strictly marketing. The reason I say that is there are many Android phones that have all these features and they don't use stainless steel.

I 100 percent believe that if the rumors are true that next years Pro models are going to be made with Titanium that Apple is going to market the crap out of the point of their much lower weight.

No matter what they do, they’ll market the crap out of it. It’s what they do. They’re probably the most effective company at marketing.

I’m not sure. I don’t take rumors quite as seriously after the enormous miss on the Series 7 Apple Watch rumors.

Personally, I like that stainless steel does not dent or gouge the same as aluminum. If you drop something made of aluminum, it’s going to look really bad afterwards. Steel is probably just going to have a scratch. That’s the main reason why I like it over aluminum.

I haven’t even unsealed my iPhone 13 Pro from its box and it already feels miles heavier than my 11 Pro. It really does remind why I said I would never get a phone over 200g. The last phone I owned over that limit was the Nokia N93 and I could never get used to the weight of that and it was one of the reasons I stopped using it after a short while.

I suffer from Cubital Tunnel Syndrome where it’s very easy to trap or pinch the nerve in my elbow and one of the things that seems to impact that is the weight of my phone. The heaviest iPhone I managed to live with in this respect was the iPhone 6S+ but I don’t think it’s weight alone but how it’s distributed in the phone plus the design of the phone.

My iPhone 13 Pro just arrived today, and so far I don’t really notice a huge weight difference from my 12 Pro. I think the weight is just going to be a bit higher for any phone made of steel and glass. Maybe I’ll notice it more over time, but I don’t really think the weight difference is a big deal for me at all.

Got used to the weight of my 13 Pro Max pretty quickly.

Would I like it to be lighter, sure but… I’ve come from an XS Max, so with all the benefits of the upgrade - it’s a non issue
Didn't notice any difference compared to my 12 Pro Max, I actually want a 6000 mAh battery, wouldn't mind if they made these phones even thicker.

You mind as well carry around a battery pack if that phone can't get you through the day. Some of you guys need to put your phones down, and enjoy other things in life.
My 13 pro max can easily get me though a day with plenty of battery life left in the tank.

I’ll never say no to a even bigger battery, these phones aren’t even that thick to be honest.

13PM feels perfect with the battery and features to back it up. The photos are incredible. The 120hz to me is the icing not to mention the improved speakers. I also like screen better than either the previous iPhone X or 12Pro in our house.
If you want nimble get a 13 mini. Even that has cameras as good or better than the 12PM. Incredible package in a small form factor.

i also want to jump to 13pro for promotion and battery life... but im worried about the weight. im coming from iphone 12.

I often find myself using my phone laying down so weight was a big consideration. I went with the standard 13. Yeah, I wish it had 120hz and telephoto etc. and I am still debating bout whether I want to return it for the Pro but I will most likely wait until next year.

Huge upgrade from the X no matter what.

Actually I really do not see the impact of the weight increase between XSMax and 13PM. I was getting some serious pain in my thumb joint and wrist using XSMax. I think the shape of the new phones is easier to grip, and the location of the Volume and power buttons are in a much better location to reach on the 13PM. So I prefer the 13PM.
Would I like lighter phone? Yes. Wonder how much weight is added for the magnet and the wireless charging. Both pretty useless for me. I know many people would disagree, but I usually charge my phone hooked up while using it.

Ok, so, experiment time! I have a large coin that is within a gram of the difference in weight between my SE 2020 and an iPhone 13 Pro. I’ve taped it to the back of my phone’s case. It’s not perfect: the weight would be more distributed on the larger phone. But hopefully I’ll get a good feel for handling and walking around with it.
Yes, this is me replying to my own post, lol! Update on this experiment (see the previous post for a photo): it has been several days, and I HAVE been getting used to the weight. It's fine in my jeans pocket, a little less fine in my sweats, OK in my shorts. Picking it up and handling it is no longer a shock. It still feels at its most unnerving when I'm looking at it while lying down.

This is really only part of the process, of course: the weight is actually spot on, but it is not as distributed. I will have to get used to not just the weight but the size, which will have to wait a bit.

Call me crazy… but you’re crazy!! 😂😂

Coming from the 12 Mini my initial reaction was W.T.F.!! Had to double check the package that Apple hadn't sent me the Max by accident 🤣

I think I will get used to the weight, after using it for just a couple of minutes my Mini started to feel insanely tiny so positive that my body will adapt to whatever tech I throw at it.
You won’t get used to it. I have been using 11 for a year now and I still despise its weight. I feel like this heavier phones will do long term damage to our wrist and fingers.

I saw an iPhone 13 pro and noticed the heft and the new features right away compared to my 8. Is the extra 27% heavier a deal breaker for me, no, but I really would like my pants to stay up. If the stainless steel bands are replaced with titanium next year, we could possibly be looking at a 13% weight reduction (based on the weight difference between the Apple Watch series 7 ss and titanium).

I feel no difference between the 12 Pro Max and 13 Pro Max. How some of y’all can, I’ll never know. I would be much happier if the phone was made thicker to get rid of the camera bump and given a much bigger battery.

Uh huh. Aluminum frame, you then would complain it bends easy.

SS is the best choice in this case. It’s not like anyone didn’t know it would be heavier. It was talked about all over the net.

I disagree that stainless steel is the best choice. There's a reason sports cars have wheels made of aluminum or magnesium alloys instead of steel. Strength and light weight is a desirable combination.

I don’t know why some find this hard to grasp. Even large engineering items like Starship from Space X they are constantly looking to reduce its weight and it’s production version is aimed to be much lighter than now but still very strong.
