I really don’t understand the point of 512gb or 1tb (for most people) given that iCloud exists.
A lot of people don't want to be dependent on iCloud, or any other cloud service. For some, it's a privacy issue; for others, they may have a limited data plan that would get used up too quickly with larger photo's, videos, and music files. Maybe, they fly a lot, and don't have access to files on the cloud, so they need to be able to store all of their files locally to work with them. With larger video files (prores), you'll need more local storage just to take the video, before it can be offloaded to a cloud service, or external drive. The storage space on the phone could essentially be a swap space between creation of the large files, and offloading to the cloud.

There are plenty of reasons people need/want larger capacities. If you're not one of those people, enjoy the money you get to save on the lower capacity storage phones.

Cheers.

You guys must not have tried to use your Apple Card to check out LOL.....if you go to the pre-order thread lots of people had issues trying to pay with the Apple Card, including myself. Took 5 tries, until I gave up and tried a different card.

Used my Apple Card. Received my email at 8:02 AM that my order was processing. No problem at all. Delivery next Friday.

I did the pre order option couple days ago and was supposed to just press one button and order it but the stupid option never showed up on my Apple Store app this morning so had to do it all over again.
Same here lol

Why get 1TB local storage?

You use it as the all-around pocket camera for photo and video... You use it to shoot non-pro/pro movies... You download videos from sites like YouTube for offline access, download music from services like Spotify, again for offline access... You use it as alternative to a portable external drive... You download so many high performance demanding games... You use it as a pocket computer to edit videos that you have shot using the same device... And many others...

But for all the possible reasons of getting one, can you afford it? Are you willing to go all in for that one device?
Yes, I got 3. One for work, home and one for the toddlers to watch YouTube so they don’t have to use mine. What’s $5,200 🤷🏻‍♂️

1 TB and still no native way to back up to an external drive. The Mac Pro (the $5,999 model) starts with 256 GB!

You couldn't back this up to a base Mac Pro.

I know you can fix it with a command line to back up to another drive, but it's such a small little thing they could include by default.

Or you can pay them per month, I know.
That's actually a good point. But it would suck to back up over the usb 2 speeds of lightning. I would love a wifi 6 NAS that I could back up to. Even if that meant I had to pay monthly for that feature, or also have to have iCloud, I would just like my backup to be local and in my own possession.

yes, I have unlimited data so that’s not an issue. If I didn’t have unlimited data my thinking would be different.
For me, I have 653gb of photos and videos dating back to 2008. It can be a PAIN waiting for those items to load when attempting to share/create something with media NOT downloaded to the device already. So to me, I’ve been waiting for a 1tb option for years and couldn’t be more pleased.

I like…LOVE music and am extremely anal retentive about proper lyrics so streaming doesn’t work for me and I also have shows I own that  doesn’t have on it’s store like Duckman and banned episodes of things that they do, movies like The Godfather Epic version that’s unavailabl, all that and I have a ton of family pics so 1TB is a good option for someone like myself.

I had the Sierra blue 256 in my cart for release day delivery and it switched to October at checkout. But I was still able to get it for same day pickup.

Wish we had apple store nearby in east central Illinois stuck with same for delivery as you saw all in a minute It jumped from opening day to October 6-11 on my 1TB Graphite promax.

I got one too for 9/24, Graphite. I guess the $1600 price didn't scare too many away.

I did the same at 8:01 Eastern. I had thought they’d be the last to slip given the price, but perhaps it is a supply constraint.
With the pre-order setup available this week, one would hope apple could use that info to see what would likely be popular.

The three stages of an iPhone launch:

1) Sept event followed by MR whining
2) Orders meet or exceed estimates
3) MR whining about defects

We're moving right along to stage 2
Do we ever get to stage 4, acceptance or is this just a never ending cycle? The latter I suspect.

2 million out of a country that has a billion and a half people. Ok buddy. Supply chain problems. Certainly not demand.
absolutely no way it’s supply chain it’s definitely demand….look at China…preorders are up 33% from iPhone 12 33%!….the buying frenzy the Chinese are saying is because u get much more iphone for the same price. It’s definitely demand.

I have about 1TB on iCloud and about 25TB on hard drives. For me, I’m expecting to have to expand that significantly and to treat iCloud less as a repository and more as a place for edited work.
