Apple's iPhone 13 series will feature a redesigned Face ID system that will allow for a smaller notch at the top of the screen, according to a new report today.

The rumor comes via hit-and-miss Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes, whose supply chain sources also claim that the ultra wide-angle lens in Apple's next-generation iPhones is due for an upgrade.
The next-generation iPhones' Face ID system will see some design changes with the size of the notch at the top of the screen to shrink and their ultrawide angle lens upgraded from 5P to 6P, the sources said.

The new design integrates Rx, Tx and flood illuminator into the same camera module, similar to that of a LiDAR scanner in the back camera module, to enable smaller notch sizes, the sources stated.
This is the third time that we've heard rumors of a thinner or shallower notch for the iPhone 13. Japanese site Mac Otakara has previously cited sources within the Chinese supply chain that say the same thing, while leaker "Ice Universe" has also claimed a smaller notch is coming this year.

Both rumors have suggested that rather than being reduced in width, the notch may be reduced in height to make it less noticeable, so it's possible the 2021 ‌iPhone‌ models will have a notch that's the same length but not as tall.

Today's story claims that the new Face ID camera module will be supplied by Foxconn and Korea-based LG Innotek, while the front-facing camera modules will be supplied by O-Film.

In addition, DigiTimes' sources claim that the iPhone 13 series will "continue to use the 7P lens module" used in last year's iPhones. However, the iPhone 13 Pro models will feature a larger CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) bringing "resolution improvements," while the non-Pro models will inherit the CIS used in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max:
The sources revealed that the Pro family of the next-generation iPhones reportedly will feature a newly-designed CIS, while the other models will adopt the CIS used by the iPhone 12 Pro devices. The CIS will be supplied mainly by Sony, the sources said.
The rumors come from the same DigiTimes story that appeared on Wednesday in a preview version, claiming that the entire iPhone 13 lineup will feature sensor-shift optical image stabilization.

I hope they take the Face ID system from the iPhone and fit it into the bezels of the new iMacs (and redesigned MacBooks) so we can have automatic unlock ala Windows Hello, it's a really nice convenience.

Literally failing to fix the actual problem with the notch - that it eats valuable space for status displays, such as the VPN status indicator.

Even to this day I found it astonishing to think that it all started with a Xbox Kinect sensor getting shrunk into our phones, and to think that they seems to be combining three lenses into one?

Kind of mind blowing I'd say.

If all the rumors are true this will be the year I’ll upgrade my X

Same for me too, it was difficult to hold off from buying the 12 Pro right now I'll be honest.🤣

at this point I would be more interested in some nice new software innovations, the hardware side is pretty much perfect as it is. The other day I had a friend take a selfie on his android phone and all you had to do was wave at the camera to take a picture, I was like wow! such a nice little yet thought out gimmick. It would also be nice to finally get an indicator in your list of photos that shows you which of those photos have already been sorted into folders. its annoying.

the biggest upgrade for me, would be the use of x60 qualcomm which suppose to have 50% better battery efficiency compare to the x55 in the 12.

iPhone mini with smaller notch and better battery please...

Would people actually buy iPhone 12 Mini it it cost the same as iPhone 12 at $799 but with same battery life.

Apple could certainly afford to put leading edge Battery Tech in smaller phone. But it will bump the price by $100. And I doubt there will be any volume increase for it.

I would even pay £1000 for an iphone 12 mini, if it had same features as the 12 pro (same battery life, cameras, ram etc) although would prefer matte stainless steel frame. But i really hope Apple do finally shrink the notch, and implement some form of touch ID in the iphone 13. The big issue for me will be that touch id only comes to the larger Pro models, making me give up the compact form factor that i love so much.

I am a notch hater, but my real problem is not with the notch itself, but the fact that videos and games are played around it. That's very disturbing to me.
Dear Apple, can you consider to NOT do that?
Im ambivalent about the notch, some apps like youtube let you stretch to the full size around the notch or
keep the image the smaller size, maybe it would be better if more apps did that? at least until
they do away with the notch.
