1 TB of storage? Two things come to mind. I don’t think consumers realize how much storage that really is and I couldn’t even fill that much memory if I tried. You’d have to have a major backlog of photos and apps to even need that much storage.

And the biggest consideration, will be the price point for a 1 TB iPhone, which we all know, Apple has a high markup on the higher storage iPhone models.
MUCH easier to fill than you expect if shooting 4k video or raw files...

That's not tons of storage space if your shooting videos in 4K60, or pictures in ProRaw. I don't know what the bit rate on Apple's 4K60 (honestly because I have not looked)But at work when we shoot 4K at 100Mbs, 1 TB is only minutes of storage.

My other thought is, if you start filling it up and you don't use cloud back up, you will need to have a huge hard drive in the computer.

Yes
LIDAR?
Can I get a 2KW UV laser built in there instead?
Or perhaps a toaster oven?
I'd be willing to take the hit on battery use.

I predict that the 1TB option will only be offered on the Pro Max. Additional flash chips will eat up space inside the phone casing and Apple won’t want to sacrifice any more battery on the standard Pro.

I would like to see the iPhone support the Apple Pencil.

1TB chips take up the same physical space as the 512GB chip.

I have the iPhone X and I’ve only used 88 GBs so far out of 256 GBs. But it definitely is future proofed. If I do upgrade in the future, will go with the base storage. The iPad is likely where I will go for more storage. My 2017 iPad Pro I went with LTE model (which I rarely use) and 64 GBs of storage. You guessed it, I’m regretting right now. 128 GBs seems to be the sweet spot.

I’ve skipped both the 11 Pro Max and the 12 Pro Max waiting for Apple to offer a 1 terrabyte storage option to replace my 512GB Xs Max. I’m full. Need the higher storage capacity. Sure hope it still has a Lightning port. Portless would be a deal breaker for me.

I can definitely see 1TB coming to the Pro models this year. 4K HDR videos and ProRAW photos take up a lot of space.

Would this mean pro lineup will start at 256GB? If so, I am stoked!

I think that is what's going to happen. If it wasn't for the pandemic I would have guessed Apple initially wanted the iPhone 12 Pro to start at $1099 with 256GB.

But it turns out even with the pandemic, iPhone Pro Max was the best selling iPhone model. So there are plenty of space for Apple to increase pricing. And to be fair 5G is expensive, Apple didn't hike up the price was a little bit of a surprise.

My guess would be something like

$1199 256GB iPhone 13 Pro Max
$1099 256GB iPhone 13 Pro

$799 128GB iPhone 13
$699 128GB iPhone 13 Mini.

And if it comes with Touch ID, then it really doesn't matter, it will still sell like crazy.

$699 128GB iPhone 12 - ( iPhone 12 128GB right now is $849, a reduction of $150, exactly the same as XR's price drop years before )
$599 128GB iPhone 12 Mini

$499 64GB iPhone 11
$399 64GB iPhone SE

And supposedly iPhone SE update and SE Plus in 2022 March with side button Touch ID. Which is strange because it would cannibalise the iPhone 13 momentum.

And then the year after will be 13s, and after that will be iPhone 15, skipping the 14.

Plan to replace my 11 Pro with a 13 Pro or 13 Mini. A weird comparison I know, but after holding the 12 Mini the other day, I was super impressed. The 13 Pro is interesting because of the rumored 120Hz display.
But don't forget that the battery in the Mini is lower in capacity than the other models.
If the 13 Mini comes with a larger capacity battery then it might be okay.

Interesting to see the people talking about how huge 1 TB is and who could possibly need that much space. I remember the same conversations when 1 GB drives first came on the market in the mid 90s. I'm sure there were similar comments when iPhones first offered 32 or 64 GB. In 20 years when everyone has 64 TB in their iPhone-equivalent communication device, this will seem just as silly as the old conversations do now.

Others have pointed out 4K footage as a big driver of increased storage need. I'm in a minority, as I'd like a terabyte for my music collection, which I still sync via iTunes. It's currently over 400 GB in Apple Lossless, which doesn't leave much room for apps, photos (57 GB and growing), and the occasional 4K videos. So I'm glad 4K is driving storage expansion so I'll be able to take advantage for my much more niche usage.

Of course, it'll still come with 5 GB of iCloud storage to back everything up. ? Though in all seriousness I hope they'll also bump the paid iCloud storage tiers, because my complete photo library is already well over 1 TB, and I'd like to eventually migrate it all to iCloud photos.

The Lidar is for the upcoming Astrophotography feature. Of course you will need to wait many years for it to measure the distance to even the nearest stars.
